The model could produce unusually readable signs, menus, invitations, posters and diagrams. But “near-perfect” was a launch-era impression, not a published accuracy rate or a guarantee. Long copy, tiny labels, exact layouts, multilingual text, charts and repeated edits could still fail.
There is also an important time distinction. The demonstrations below describe GPT‑4o image generation as announced in 2025. OpenAI’s later documentation refers to newer ChatGPT Images 2.0 and GPT Image models, so the model behind a ChatGPT result in 2026 may not be the original launch system.
What OpenAI actually launched
On March 25, 2025, OpenAI announced “4o image generation,” a native image capability built into GPT‑4o. OpenAI said it could follow detailed instructions, use conversational context, transform uploaded images, learn from reference images and create both photorealistic and stylized visuals. Its examples included street signs, menus, invitations, whiteboards, comics and diagrams.
The practical change was not simply prettier artwork. It was the ability to ask for an image containing meaningful language and then refine that image through a conversation. A user could request a poster, ask for a headline change, or transform an uploaded scene without starting from an unrelated prompt.

At launch, OpenAI said the generator became the default image tool in ChatGPT for Free, Plus, Pro and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access described as coming later. Generation often took up to about one minute because the system produced detailed images; that was a launch observation, not a permanent latency promise.

Why readable text mattered
Earlier text-to-image systems generally treated writing as visual texture. They could imitate the appearance of lettering while losing the symbols themselves: a familiar word became random characters, a logo changed between attempts, and labels were almost convincing but meaningless.
That distinction matters whenever an image communicates information. A menu needs correct dishes and prices; a classroom worksheet needs accurate instructions; a product label needs the right name; and a street sign must not invent a destination. A beautiful background is not enough if the words are wrong.
OpenAI described its goal as “useful image generation”: visuals that communicate through language and symbols rather than merely looking attractive. The launch examples showed that short, prominent text could be substantially more usable than in earlier systems.
Why GPT‑4o was different
OpenAI’s system-card addendum describes 4o image generation as an autoregressive model natively embedded in the omnimodal GPT‑4o architecture. That differs from the diffusion-based DALL·E series.

“Native” means the image generator was integrated with GPT‑4o’s language, vision and conversational context. The same system could interpret a prompt, inspect an uploaded image, reason about a requested change and generate a new image. It does not mean the output behaves like editable vector artwork or that symbolic accuracy is guaranteed.
OpenAI said the system improved on DALL·E 3 in text rendering, detailed instruction following, image transformation, conversational editing and use of world knowledge. DALL·E remained available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT at the time, but product routing and model availability can change.
What it did well
Short headlines and labels
A single large headline or a few words on a sign were among the strongest use cases. Even then, every character should be checked rather than judged by how plausible the lettering looks.

Posters, invitations and social graphics
The model could combine a requested style, color palette and scene with a prominent title. These results are useful as concepts or drafts, especially when a designer will rebuild the final typography.
Menus, signs and product concepts
Short lists and labels could make a generated mockup more informative than a conventional text-to-image illustration. Prices, names, dates and URLs still require manual verification.

Diagrams, whiteboards and comics
GPT‑4o could place speech bubbles, labels and contextual notes into a scene. This is helpful for brainstorming and teaching materials, but not a substitute for checking technical relationships, data or every repeated line of text.
Conversational edits and transformations
Users could upload an image, request a transformation, and continue refining it. The shared context made this workflow more natural than sending every revision to a separate image endpoint.

Text accuracy is not the same as legibility
A word can look perfectly readable while being wrong. The model may misspell uncommon terms, omit or duplicate phrases, change text during an edit, confuse similar characters, or add plausible details. Transcribe the result and compare it character by character with the requested copy.
Dense information and small type
OpenAI listed dense information with small text and precise graphing among the system’s limitations. A large title is materially easier than a legal notice, software interface, map, financial chart or classroom handout.
Spatial and layout errors
Text may attach to the wrong object, face away from the viewer, fall outside its intended area or overlap another element. OpenAI also warned that longer images could be cropped too tightly. Correct spelling does not guarantee usable margins, hierarchy, contrast, kerning or line breaks.

Editing drift
Conversational editing is not pixel-locked. Correcting a headline can change a face or background; changing a color can alter the composition; adding one object can remove another. Preserve the original prompt and compare each revision with it.
Multilingual and factual failures
OpenAI acknowledged imperfect multilingual rendering. Performance in English should not be assumed to transfer to every language, script or mixed-language layout. The model can also invent names, dates, statistics or technical labels. A polished infographic is not evidence that its information is true.
How to get the best text results
- Keep the copy short. Start with one prominent text element instead of a paragraph-heavy composition.
- Supply exact wording. Put the text in quotation marks or a clearly delimited block, including capitalization, punctuation and requested line breaks.
- Specify presentation. Ask for large, high-contrast lettering and state where it should appear. “Do not add, remove or alter any words” can reduce—but cannot eliminate—changes.
- Generate variations. A successful sample does not establish deterministic reliability.
- Proofread at full size. Check names, prices, dates, URLs, legal copy, medical wording and every label.
- Use a design application for final type. Replace generated lettering with editable text when alignment, brand fonts, accessibility or print output matters.
- Verify data independently. Rebuild charts, maps and quantitative diagrams from the source data rather than trusting the rendered image.
Safety and image provenance
OpenAI described prompt and output moderation, stronger restrictions involving real people, nudity and graphic violence, and blocking of child sexual abuse material and sexual deepfakes. The launch also described C2PA metadata identifying images as generated by GPT‑4o and an internal search system intended to help investigate whether an image originated with the model.
OpenAI’s current help documentation says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex and the API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks. Metadata can disappear through screenshots, exports or platform processing, and watermarks are not universal proof. Provenance can indicate origin; it does not prove that text is factual, that an image is unedited, or that anyone has legal permission to use it.

The original story concerns 4o image generation, not necessarily the model serving every current ChatGPT request. OpenAI’s later ChatGPT Images 2.0 documentation describes a newer system with stronger world knowledge, instruction following, realism and dense-text generation than earlier GPT‑4o Image Generation 1.0 and 1.5 deployments.

For developers, OpenAI introduced gpt-image-1 in the API on April 23, 2025. Its launch announcement listed historical prices of $5 per million text-input tokens, $10 per million image-input tokens and $40 per million image-output tokens, with approximate square-image costs of $0.02 low quality, $0.07 medium quality and $0.19 high quality. Those figures should not be treated as August 2026 prices without checking the current model page. OpenAI’s current documentation recommends GPT Image 2 for API use and identifies chatgpt-image-latest as the previous ChatGPT image model.
API users also need to account for organization verification, usage tiers, rate limits, moderation, output-size and quality settings, and model-specific compatibility. Rate limits vary by model and usage tier.
Is it suitable for professional design?
Use it when
- You need a fast visual concept or several compositions.
- The image has a short headline or label.
- You want conversational revisions or an uploaded-image transformation.
- You can proofread and, if necessary, rebuild the typography.
Be cautious when
- The image contains legal, financial, medical or safety-critical text.
- Exact brand guidelines, prices, dates, names or URLs are required.
- The design contains dense paragraphs, charts, maps, schematics or a less-supported script.
- Multiple characters or objects must remain identical across a series.
Choose conventional design software when
- Copy cannot be wrong.
- You need editable vector text, pixel-level positioning, reliable fonts or exact brand colors.
- The work must meet accessibility, regulatory or print-production requirements.
- You are delivering final commercial artwork rather than a concept.
For most professional workflows, the practical answer is a combination: use an image model for ideas, backgrounds, visual elements and rough compositions, then use a conventional editor for final copy, typography, data, alignment and brand compliance.
Verdict
OpenAI did not make image text perfect. It made readable, context-aware text common enough to change what image generators were useful for. That is a real advance over the DALL·E era, but “near-perfect” describes the strongest short-text results better than the average production workflow. Treat generated writing as untrusted until it has been proofread and, for exact deliverables, rebuilt in a design tool.
