ChatGPT is available for free, but sustained use, advanced tools, team administration, and high-volume workloads can cost extra. OpenAI’s current U.S. price signals are Free at $0, Go at $8 per month, Plus at $20, Pro at $200, Business at $20 or $25 per user depending on billing, and Enterprise at custom pricing. ChatGPT subscriptions cover use inside ChatGPT; OpenAI API calls are billed separately.
Prices, limits, model access, regional availability, taxes, and app-store charges can change. The comparison below reflects OpenAI pricing information available on August 18, 2026; check the live ChatGPT pricing page before subscribing.

These are not simply tiers that buy a larger message counter. Plans can differ in model access, reasoning, context, memory, image generation, file analysis, deep research, Codex, administration, privacy defaults, support, and usage controls.
What each ChatGPT plan includes
Free: $0
The Free plan is suitable for occasional questions, basic writing, web search, simple analysis, and trying ChatGPT before paying. OpenAI’s pricing comparison shows restrictions or lower limits for areas such as file uploads, image generation, data analysis, vision, reasoning models, Codex, memory, and connected tools.

Free is a poor fit for sustained research, frequent large-document analysis, high-volume image creation, or coding workflows that cannot tolerate interruptions. “Free” means there is no subscription charge—not that every model or feature is continuously available.
Go: $8 per month in the United States
OpenAI announced ChatGPT Go at $8 per month in the U.S. It sits between Free and Plus and is aimed at people who want more messages, uploads, image creation, voice chats, memory, and longer conversations or context without paying Plus pricing.
Go is worth considering when Free limits are the main problem but you do not need Plus’s broader advanced-work and productivity feature set. OpenAI says Go may include ads, while Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise remain ad-free according to its current materials.
Do not treat $8 as a worldwide price. Currency, local taxes, availability, app-store billing, and regional feature support can change the amount shown at checkout. More text chats also do not mean unlimited access to every model or tool.
Plus: $20 per month
Plus is the general-purpose paid plan for an individual who uses ChatGPT regularly. OpenAI lists expanded access to advanced models, reasoning models, file uploads and analysis, image generation, voice, deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage, and selected early-access features.
At $20 per month, Plus is usually the sensible starting point for writers, students, researchers, analysts, developers, and professionals who use ChatGPT several times a week. It provides a substantial upgrade over Free without Pro’s $200 price.
Plus is not a promise of unlimited messages. Limits can vary by model, feature, demand, system conditions, and account eligibility. OpenAI’s Plus help page and the pricing comparison are safer references than fixed message counts copied into a permanent buying guide.

Pro: $200 per month
Pro is designed for people who use ChatGPT as a high-volume professional tool. OpenAI describes it as providing substantially more usage than Plus—5× or 20× more depending on the applicable Pro offering—along with higher access for advanced reasoning, Codex, deep research, image generation, memory, context, projects, tasks, and custom GPTs.
Pro can make sense for a consultant, researcher, developer, or professional whose work regularly hits Plus limits and whose time savings justify $200 per month. It is difficult to justify for casual questions, occasional writing, or a workflow that rarely reaches a usage cap.
“Unlimited” should be read narrowly. OpenAI’s plan language remains subject to abuse guardrails and model-specific allowances. High-volume automation, concurrent activity, or behavior resembling misuse can still trigger restrictions.
Business: $20 or $25 per user
ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user per month with annual billing or $25 per user per month with monthly billing in the current U.S. pricing signal. There is a two-user minimum, so the base subscription is $40 per month equivalent on annual billing or $50 per month on monthly billing, before taxes and additional usage.

Its value is organizational: centralized billing, workspace administration, SAML single sign-on, MFA, connectors, usage analytics, budgeting, spend controls, and business privacy terms under which business data is not used for training by default.
Choose Business when multiple people need a managed workspace or governance controls. A solo user who only wants more personal usage will usually find Plus simpler and cheaper.
Business does not include OpenAI API usage. OpenAI also changes eligibility and availability for some features, including Codex seats, so check the current workspace documentation before assuming a particular team feature is included.

Enterprise: custom pricing
Enterprise has no standard public monthly price. OpenAI’s enterprise offering is aimed at organizations that need negotiated contracts, invoicing, service-level agreements, priority support, custom retention, data residency, SCIM, enterprise key management, domain verification, role-based access controls, expanded context, and larger-file support.

Enterprise agreements may use credit-based or token-based structures, volume discounts, or other negotiated terms. Do not estimate an Enterprise price from the individual or Business plans; request a quote through OpenAI’s business pricing page.
Plus versus Pro: which individual plan is worth paying for?

The price difference is $180 per month. Pro is worthwhile only if higher-volume research, coding, reasoning, image, or agentic work produces at least that much value in saved time or additional billable output. Buying Pro because it is the most expensive option is not a sound cost calculation.
Go versus Free versus Plus
- Choose Free if you ask occasional questions and can tolerate restricted uploads, images, reasoning, analysis, and memory.
- Choose Go if Free limits are frustrating and you mainly want more messages, uploads, images, voice, and memory at a lower price than Plus.
- Choose Plus if you need advanced reasoning, deep research, projects, custom GPTs, stronger file analysis, or expanded coding and productivity features.
Go changes the decision for people who previously had to choose between Free and Plus. Its possible ads, regional availability, and narrower feature positioning are the trade-offs for the lower price.
How ChatGPT credits and overage costs work
Credits are a separate flexible-usage balance for supported features. They do not upgrade your plan and they are not API credits.
The usual sequence is:
- Your plan’s included usage is consumed first.
- When an applicable included limit is reached, supported usage may draw from your credit balance.
- Eligible Plus and Pro users can purchase credits for supported Codex and agentic features, including other features enabled for their account.
- You can review balance and recent consumption in the Usage Dashboard.
Credits can be shared across supported features available to the account, but they do not make every ChatGPT feature pay-as-you-go. Eligibility and supported features can change.
Credit expiration and auto top-up
According to OpenAI’s current credit guidance, purchased credits are valid for 12 months, do not roll over after expiration, are generally non-refundable except where required by law, are non-transferable, and have no cash value. Eligible Plus and Pro users can enable auto top-up, which charges the default payment method when the balance falls below the selected threshold.
Disable auto top-up if you need a hard spending ceiling. Concurrent tasks can consume credits faster than expected; OpenAI also notes that balances can become negative in some concurrent-use situations, with later purchases first offsetting the negative balance.

Some Business and Enterprise/Edu usage is measured in credits rather than being covered entirely by a fixed subscription. OpenAI’s current rate card gives examples such as:

Excel, PowerPoint, and Workspace Agent usage can be token-based. Actual consumption depends on input tokens, cached input, output length, model, reasoning, and task complexity. Treat the figures as a current rate-card signal, not a guaranteed cost for every task. Check the live rate card before budgeting.
How Codex usage is charged
OpenAI’s current Codex documentation describes token-based credit pricing for most customers rather than a single guaranteed price per message. Example rates in the current card are:

OpenAI gives a rough estimate of 5–40 credits for a typical GPT-5.6 Sol Codex task, but that is not a fixed task price. Repository size, task complexity, reasoning, automation, concurrent instances, and fast mode can materially change consumption. Consult the Codex rate card before estimating a development budget.
ChatGPT subscription versus OpenAI API: two different bills

A Plus, Pro, or Business subscription does not include API credits. A developer can incur API charges without having ChatGPT Plus, and a ChatGPT subscriber may still need a separate API billing account. API cost is generally calculated from input tokens, cached input where applicable, output tokens, and feature-specific charges.

Estimating your real monthly cost
Individual plans
Use this formula:
Total monthly cost = plan price + optional credits + applicable taxes or app-store differences.
- Plus only: approximately $20 per month before taxes.
- Pro only: approximately $200 per month before taxes.
- Go: approximately $8 per month in the U.S. announcement, subject to checkout price and availability.
- Plus with credits: $20 plus whatever supported credits you purchase.
Do not assume you will incur credits. They apply only to supported features after included usage is consumed.

API projects
Use:
API cost = input-token cost + cached-input cost where applicable + output-token cost + feature-specific charges.
The ChatGPT subscription price is not a useful proxy for an API workload. Estimate the application separately using the model and usage assumptions shown on OpenAI’s API pricing page.

- Casual user: Start with Free.
- Student: Start with Free; consider Go or Plus if uploads, images, research, or frequent study sessions regularly hit limits. Any education-specific offer should be checked separately for eligibility and current terms.
- Writer or researcher: Plus is the practical default if you use file analysis, deep research, projects, or advanced reasoning regularly.
- Developer: Use Plus or Pro for direct ChatGPT and Codex work; open a separate API billing account for software or automation.
- Heavy professional user: Consider Pro only when repeated Plus limits have a measurable cost in time or missed work.
- Small team: Choose Business when centralized billing, administration, SSO/MFA, connectors, analytics, or business privacy matter. Its two-seat minimum applies.
- Large organization: Choose Enterprise when procurement, SLAs, data residency, SCIM, custom retention, support, or negotiated terms are required.
How to avoid surprise charges
- Check the billing cadence. Business costs $20 per user on annual billing or $25 monthly in the current U.S. signal.
- Check the final checkout amount. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing, and Apple or Google billing can change the displayed total.
- Review the Usage Dashboard. Watch credit balances and recent consumption.
- Disable auto top-up if you do not want automatic charges.
- Watch shared credit pools when multiple supported features or users can consume the same balance.
- Separate API budgeting. ChatGPT credits and API billing are different systems.
- Recheck limits before committing to a workflow. Model access, caps, context windows, and feature availability can change without a subscription price change.
Important limitations to understand
Plan comparisons are snapshots, not permanent entitlements. OpenAI can change model names, retire models, adjust limits, alter feature availability, or introduce different regional treatment while leaving a subscription price unchanged. A plan described as unlimited may still be limited by abuse prevention and model-specific allowances.
For the same reason, avoid choosing a plan solely because a particular model name appears in a comparison table. Check the current plan page and help documentation immediately before subscribing or designing a production workflow.
