OpenAI did not publicly replace its familiar Blossom symbol with a black circle. A September 2024 Fortune report said employees had seen an unfinished redesign proposal featuring a large black “O” or ring and reacted negatively. The proposal was still in progress; it was not a confirmed final logo or public launch.
What employees reportedly saw
Fortune reported that OpenAI previewed a broader visual-identity redesign at a company-wide meeting. The package included new typefaces and a proposed standalone mark described as a large black “O,” ring, or zero. Fortune based its account on two people familiar with the meeting; it did not publish an official image of the proposed mark. OpenAI did not respond to Fortune’s request for comment at the time.
According to the report, many employees were taken aback. Some reportedly called the concept “ominous” or said it lacked creativity, and a few voiced objections during the meeting. Those accounts describe reported reactions, not a company-wide vote or proof that every employee opposed the design. “Horrendous,” meanwhile, is the judgment in Futurism’s headline, not an official assessment by OpenAI or a measured consensus among staff.
Most important, Fortune described the work as ongoing and said it could change before any public unveiling. Calling the black ring OpenAI’s “new logo” without that qualification turns a reported internal proposal into something it was not.

Why the proposal felt like such a sharp departure
OpenAI’s existing emblem is known as the Blossom: a geometric, interlocking mark that reads as a flower or a hexagonal form. It is distinct from the company’s wordmark and from the typefaces used in its wider identity. Fortune described the black-ring concept as a significant aesthetic departure from that symbol.
OpenAI’s current brand guidance says the Blossom’s circles represent the intersection of humanity and technology, while its right angles suggest technological precision and structure. Fortune also reported that designer Ben Barry conceived the existing mark around ideas of precision, potential, and optimism. These are the meanings attributed to the design by its creators and the company, not objective properties every viewer must see in it.
A stark black ring would communicate differently to some people: it might feel clean and scalable, but also generic, severe, or even like a void. That contrast helps explain the reported reaction without establishing that one design is objectively better. A circular shape may be easy to reproduce, but a simple shape alone does not guarantee that people will recognize it as OpenAI.

Why staff might care about changing the Blossom
A logo is not just decoration when it has become a shorthand for a company. OpenAI’s Blossom is closely associated with ChatGPT and the public rise of generative AI. Fortune, citing the company’s 2022 brand book, called it OpenAI’s “most recognizable brand element.” The report also noted that employees used it on merchandise such as shirts and stickers. Replacing a familiar symbol can therefore feel like changing part of the organization’s shared identity, not merely updating a graphic.

There is also a practical branding trade-off. A company growing from a research organization into a widely used technology business may want a coherent system that works on apps, websites, products, and in different sizes. A simplified symbol and a proprietary typeface could help with consistency and reproduction. But a mark that is too generic can weaken distinction, while changing a well-known emblem can confuse users and dilute recognition built over time.
Why was OpenAI considering a redesign?
One rationale in Fortune’s reporting was that OpenAI did not own some typefaces used in its branding and website text; they were licensed from outside designers. A redesign could give the company more control over its typography and establish a more unified visual system. Fortune also reported that the effort had begun roughly a year earlier and coincided with the expansion of OpenAI’s internal creative and design team.
That explanation does not, by itself, account for replacing the Blossom: Fortune reported that the existing logo had been created internally. The available account does not establish a definitive reason for changing the symbol, or say what design criteria ultimately guided the work.

Fortune covered the logo proposal shortly after reporting on possible changes to OpenAI’s unusual nonprofit-controlled corporate structure. Those developments were contemporaneous, but the available reporting does not show that the logo was intended to represent a restructuring or a shift in OpenAI’s mission. Treating that connection as fact would go beyond the evidence.

Did OpenAI adopt the black-ring logo?
The cited reporting does not establish that it did. Fortune described an internal proposal that was still being developed, not a completed identity or public launch. OpenAI’s current official design guidance presents the Blossom as an official symbol and provides rules for using it.
The same guidance describes a circular “O” in OpenAI’s wordmark. That is not proof that the separate black-ring concept reported in 2024 became the company’s primary logo. The Blossom and the wordmark are distinct brand elements, and the existence of a round letter in one does not confirm adoption of the other proposal. The careful conclusion is that the proposal’s final fate is not established by these sources; the black circle should not be presented as OpenAI’s confirmed replacement logo.
What the controversy does—and doesn’t—tell us
The episode illustrates how internal feedback can matter in a rebrand: employees are among the people expected to use and represent a company’s identity, and a recognizable mark carries accumulated meaning. It also shows the limits of a dramatic headline. The employee objections were reported, but the number and views of all staff were not measured publicly; the proposal was not shown as a confirmed final design; and criticism of its look does not prove the redesign failed or that it was tied to corporate restructuring.
