OnTrack appears to turn a CarPlay display into a configurable live-data dashboard. It is not a built-in CarPlay feature or a replacement for your instrument cluster: the iPhone app needs a compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapter, a supported vehicle, and access to the specific parameters (PIDs) your car exposes.
The app was identified in a July 2023 discussion about the original story. Because current App Store availability, pricing, iOS requirements, adapter support and vehicle coverage were not independently verified here, check the live listing before buying hardware or subscribing.
What OnTrack actually does
A vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system can provide values such as engine speed, coolant temperature and throttle position. OnTrack appears to read those values through an OBD-II adapter, interpret them on the iPhone, and present a CarPlay-approved dashboard on the vehicle’s screen.

- The iPhone receives and interprets it in OnTrack.
- CarPlay displays the app’s dashboard on the head unit.
The headline claim that it shows “all” important data is marketing shorthand. No app can expose every sensor or proprietary ECU value on every vehicle.

The contemporaneous discussion identifies the app as OnTrack. It also mentions an OBDLink MX+ adapter, but one user reported difficulty getting the adapter, OnTrack and CarPlay to work together. That is useful compatibility evidence, not an official certification.

- Diagnostic trouble codes, if included by the app
Manufacturer-specific performance data
Values such as knock retard, ignition timing, ethanol content, transmission temperature, oil temperature, boost, fuel pressure or individual-cylinder data may require vehicle-specific support. Mustang owners in the discussion highlighted knock/timing and learned ethanol percentage as potentially useful examples. Their comments do not establish a universal OnTrack feature list.
What it should not be expected to show
- Every proprietary ECU parameter
- Complete ABS, airbag, body-control or driver-assistance data
- ECU coding, programming or flashing functions
- Safety warnings with the same authority and priority as the factory cluster
- A value the vehicle does not publish through its diagnostic interface
Hardware and compatibility checklist
The likely minimum setup is an iPhone, a CarPlay-capable car or head unit, OnTrack, a compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapter and a vehicle that exposes the desired PIDs.

- iPhone and iOS: The current app’s iOS requirement must be checked in the App Store.
- CarPlay: The vehicle or aftermarket unit must allow the app’s CarPlay category. App support can change with iOS and CarPlay updates.
- Adapter: “OBD-II compatible” does not mean compatible with every iPhone app. Confirm the exact model and Bluetooth implementation.
- Vehicle: A car can be fully OBD-II compliant yet omit a particular manufacturer-specific PID.
- Connection: Another app, adapter sleep mode, firmware, ignition state or Bluetooth pairing can interfere.
- Power and security: Use a reputable adapter with a documented sleep mode. Remove it during long storage or when lending the car if unauthorized diagnostic access is a concern.
Do not assume wireless CarPlay works simply because wired CarPlay does. The available evidence does not identify whether reported connection trouble involved wireless mode, iOS, firmware or the app itself.
Subscription: treat the old report as a warning, not a price list
A July 2023 forum participant said the free tier was limited to two PIDs and that seeing more required a subscription. This is an attributed historical user report, not verified current pricing or policy. Check the current Apple App Store listing and in-app terms before subscribing; do not rely on a dollar amount or feature limit from an old discussion.

Practical setup path
Exact OnTrack menu labels may change, so use this as a connection sequence rather than a promise of button-by-button instructions:

- Plug the adapter into the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
- Switch on the ignition or start the engine as the adapter maker requires.
- Pair the adapter using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open the adapter’s companion app, if applicable, and verify that live data is actually arriving.
- Open OnTrack and select only a few useful values.
- Launch OnTrack from the CarPlay screen and confirm that readings change plausibly.
- Save the layout while parked, before driving.
If the connection fails
- OnTrack is missing from CarPlay: Recheck the app’s CarPlay support, then disconnect and reconnect the iPhone.
- The adapter will not connect: Check Bluetooth permissions, sleep mode, ignition state and whether another app has claimed the adapter.
- CarPlay works but gauges are empty: Verify communication in the adapter’s own app first.
- Only some gauges are blank or zero: The vehicle may not support that PID, or the app may lack the manufacturer-specific decoder.
- Values freeze: Stop treating them as live data, reconnect, and check for Bluetooth conflicts.
- The adapter app works but OnTrack does not: That points to an app/adapter compatibility problem, not proof that the vehicle is incompatible.
- Readings look wrong: Compare with a factory gauge, service documentation, a scan tool or a known-good measurement before making a tuning or repair decision.
It is an auxiliary display, not a replacement gauge
The factory cluster remains the authoritative source for warning lights and regulated vehicle alerts. OBD values can be delayed, unavailable, misinterpreted or calculated differently from a dedicated sensor. This matters especially for oil pressure, coolant temperature, transmission temperature and fuel pressure.

Configure the screen while stopped, keep the number of gauges small, and never troubleshoot pairing while moving. A rapidly changing dashboard can be more distracting than useful.
Who should use it?
Good fit
- Track-day drivers and tuners
- Turbocharged or flex-fuel owners
- Drivers monitoring temperatures during towing or hard use
- Owners whose factory display omits useful live values
- Enthusiasts who already own a supported adapter
Skip it if you need
- Only basic trouble-code reading
- ECU coding, flashing or module-level service functions
- A guaranteed dashboard for every sensor and every car
- A certified replacement for factory warnings
Alternatives
The factory display is simplest for warnings and basic status. A dedicated scan tool is better for codes, service diagnostics and broader module access. OBDLink’s ecosystem (official site) is a natural alternative for buyers prioritizing adapter support and diagnostics. Ford owners needing deeper module diagnostics may prefer FORScan, which is not a direct substitute for a simple CarPlay gauge screen. Physical aftermarket gauges remain preferable when a permanently visible, sensor-specific reading is critical.
Verdict
OnTrack is best understood as a convenient CarPlay presentation layer for selected OBD-II data. It can be worthwhile for an enthusiast whose car lacks the desired gauges and whose iPhone, adapter, vehicle and PIDs are all supported. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting universal compatibility, deep diagnostics or factory-grade warning reliability. Confirm current app terms and exact hardware support before spending money.
