TCL is the better overall choice for most people buying a main TV; onn. is the better choice when the lowest price matters more than picture quality and features. But the brand names alone do not settle the comparison: a basic TCL can be close to an onn. set, while TCL’s QLED and Mini-LED models can be a substantial step up. Compare exact models at the same screen size and price.
This comparison is about onn. and TCL televisions sold in the U.S. If you mean an onn. streaming device versus a TCL TV, those are different products: a streamer can change the apps and interface, but not the TV’s screen or picture quality.

Bottom line: Buy onn. if you want the cheapest acceptable TV for basic use. Buy TCL if you care more about HDR, gaming, viewing in a bright room, or getting a stronger main-screen experience.

onn. is primarily a budget TV brand associated with Walmart. Its range includes small, lower-resolution sets as well as larger 4K Roku TVs, but size, “4K,” and an HDR label do not tell you how well a screen performs. TCL sells across a broader range: basic 4K models, QLED sets, and QD-Mini LED models such as the QM6K, QM7K, and QM8K. The gap between a basic TCL and a Mini-LED TCL can be considerable.

For a fair comparison, line up the exact model numbers, screen sizes, prices, and specifications. Check panel type where independently verified, backlight and local-dimming design, measured brightness, refresh rate, HDMI features, and viewing-angle performance. TCL’s current U.S. TV catalog shows the range of its lineup; model-level reviews at RTINGS are more useful than a blanket brand ranking.
Picture quality: 4K resolution is only one part of the story
Both brands sell 4K televisions, but native 4K resolution does not guarantee equal image quality. Brightness, black levels, contrast, local dimming, color volume, motion handling, and panel uniformity all affect what you see. A TV can show a 4K stream sharply and still produce flat-looking HDR, grayish blacks, or uneven brightness across the screen.
Testing of the onn. 100012588 found its native 4K performance very good, but HDR ineffective because the set lacked the peak brightness needed to make HDR convincing. The test also reported a narrow viewing angle, below-average black-level performance, and visible non-uniformity in that sample. These findings are evidence about that model, not every onn. TV.
TCL’s advantage is most apparent as you move up its range. QLED models can deliver a more capable color presentation, and Mini-LED models can offer higher brightness and more sophisticated local dimming than basic budget sets. That does not mean every TCL is a picture-quality winner: an entry-level TCL may offer only a modest improvement over an onn. set, and its performance still depends on its specific panel and backlight. Check independent reviews of the exact model where available.

HDR labels need context
“Supports HDR” means the TV can accept compatible HDR content; it does not mean the screen can reproduce HDR with strong highlights, deep blacks, and rich color. Those results depend on brightness, contrast, local dimming, color volume, and tone mapping. Dolby Vision support likewise does not guarantee a high-quality Dolby Vision picture. For HDR movies or a bright room, a capable TCL QLED or Mini-LED model is a safer bet than a basic onn. set—but check testing and specifications rather than relying on the badge alone.
Viewing angle and uniformity
If several people watch from seats spread across a room, viewing angle matters: some budget panels lose contrast or color when seen from the side. For a screen mounted high, a wide couch, or a large TV, look for measurements or reviews that address off-axis performance and uniformity. Do not assume a large screen is a good value simply because its price is low; uneven backlighting or narrow viewing angles are more obvious when the picture fills a large area.
Upscaling and motion: important for cable, sports, and older video
Not everything you watch is native 4K. Cable channels, broadcast TV, DVDs, older videos, and compressed streams may be 720p or 1080p, so the TV must scale them to fit a 4K panel. In the Consumer Reports test, the onn. model showed some jagged edges when converting HD content to UHD, although its 1080i deinterlacing and film-mode detection tested well. That is a more useful picture than simply calling its processing good or bad: performance varies by task and model.

TCL processing also varies by model, with higher tiers generally offering a stronger overall package. For sports and fast action, check review findings on motion handling as well as the panel’s refresh rate. A 120-Hz specification does not by itself guarantee clean motion or good handling of lower-quality feeds.

Roku TV or Google TV?
Many onn. televisions are Roku TVs, while much of TCL’s current U.S. lineup uses Google TV. The choice is mainly about the software experience, not the screen.
- Roku TV: A good fit if you prefer a straightforward interface and already use Roku. It provides access to major streaming apps, but the speed and polish of the experience still depend on the TV’s hardware and implementation.
- Google TV: A good fit for Google Assistant, casting, and the Google Play ecosystem. Some viewers find its recommendations and home screen busier than Roku’s.
Neither platform should determine the purchase by itself. If a TV’s built-in software feels slow or dated, an external streaming device can provide a different interface and app experience. It cannot fix weak HDR, poor black levels, a narrow viewing angle, uneven uniformity, or inadequate motion handling.
Gaming: check the ports and features, not just the brand
A basic onn. TV can be fine for a Nintendo Switch, older console, or casual 60-Hz play. It is not the default choice for someone seeking 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), or other advanced features. TCL has stronger gaming candidates, particularly in its higher Q-series and Mini-LED tiers; some qualifying models support HDMI 2.1, high-refresh-rate 4K, and VRR. - Number of HDMI 2.1 ports and which ports support the relevant bandwidth
- Support for 4K at 120 Hz or higher, if you need it
- VRR range and whether it works at the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use
- Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), input lag, and Dolby Vision gaming support, if relevant
- eARC port location, especially if you will also connect a soundbar or receiver
Feature combinations can vary. Confirm that the functions you need work together on the specific model rather than assuming every HDMI port offers every feature.
Which brand fits your room and viewing habits?
- Bedroom, guest room, dorm, or temporary housing: onn. can make sense when viewing is occasional, mostly straight-on, and the goal is basic streaming at the lowest practical cost.
- Main living-room TV: Lean toward TCL, especially if the TV will be used daily or you want stronger contrast, brightness, processing, or gaming options.
- Bright room: Look for brightness measurements and glare performance. A more capable TCL may be preferable, but not every TCL is bright enough to be a clear upgrade.
- Movies and HDR: Favor a TCL model with measured brightness and effective local dimming. A basic onn. set may accept HDR without making it look especially impactful.
- Sports and fast motion: Compare tested motion performance, refresh rate, and upscaling for the specific models.
- Wide seating arrangement: Look for verified viewing-angle measurements. Do not assume either brand guarantees a wide-angle panel.
- Roku preference: An onn. Roku TV may suit a strict budget. You can also choose a better TCL screen and add a Roku device if the particular model or platform you want is available.
A midrange TCL QLED or Mini-LED may be the most sensible upgrade if you can spend more than the cheapest onn. set. But if the TCL in your price range is an entry-level model with similar backlighting, brightness, and refresh rate, compare the actual specifications and reviews before paying extra.

There is not enough evidence here to claim that one brand has a lower failure rate than the other. Individual owner reviews can flag possible issues—such as shipping damage, dead pixels, remote trouble, or app problems—but they do not establish a reliable brand-wide failure rate.

- Inspect the screen promptly for cracks, dead pixels, backlight problems, and uneven areas.
- Photograph visible damage before mounting the TV or discarding its packaging.
- Keep the box and packing materials until the return period ends.
- Read the protection plan’s price, coverage, and exclusions; do not assume it is worthwhile simply because it is offered.
Does an onn. streaming device make a TCL TV better?
An onn. Google TV streaming device can add apps, Google TV, and voice-control features to a TCL television—or another TV with a compatible HDMI input. Walmart listings describe a standard onn. 4K device with 8 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM, and an onn. 4K Plus listing with 16 GB of storage, 2 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6, and Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. These specifications are device-specific; check the current product listing for the exact version.
An external streamer is worth considering when the panel still looks good but its built-in software is slow, lacks an app, or is no longer convenient. It will not add Mini-LED backlighting, improve peak brightness, widen viewing angles, or make the TV’s HDMI hardware support features it lacks. Also, Dolby Vision output from a streamer is useful only if the TV itself supports Dolby Vision and can display it effectively.
How to compare two listings before buying
- Match the screen size and use. A smaller, better-performing TV may be a better buy than a much larger budget screen, depending on seating distance and room.
- Write down full model numbers. Brand names and series labels alone may hide meaningful differences between sizes or revisions.
- Check picture hardware. Look for credible data on brightness, contrast, local dimming, viewing angles, and uniformity—not just 4K or HDR badges.
- Check the refresh rate and gaming ports. Confirm the HDMI port count and the specific features you need.
- Choose the interface second. Roku or Google TV preference matters, but can often be changed with a streaming device.
- Verify seller and terms. Confirm availability, return rules, warranty, and whether the item is sold by Walmart or a marketplace seller.
Current TCL models such as the QM6K can offer a meaningful step up for buyers who want better picture and gaming capability, while higher-tier QM-series sets target more demanding rooms and uses. Check current model reviews and the TCL QM6K support information rather than relying on specifications for older TCL 5-Series or 6-Series sets, which are historical models and do not describe the current lineup.
