To reduce an image’s file size, use an image optimizer to compress it, resize its pixel dimensions if it is larger than needed, or convert it to a suitable format such as WebP. These approaches can be combined, but there is no single setting or format that guarantees the smallest file and acceptable quality for every image. Keep the original, preview the result, and check the destination’s actual file-size, format, and dimension limits before uploading.
What “image size” means
The phrase can refer to two different things. Pixel dimensions describe width and height—for example, 2400 × 1600 pixels. File size describes how many bytes the image occupies, often shown in KB or MB. Resizing changes the number of pixels; compression changes how image data is encoded. Either can reduce file size, but they solve different problems.
- Resize when the image’s pixel dimensions exceed what the website or application needs.
- Compress when the pixel dimensions are appropriate but the file takes too many bytes.
- Convert formats when a different format better balances file size, appearance, transparency, animation, and destination compatibility.
A file can be large in bytes despite modest dimensions, or have large dimensions but already be compressed efficiently. Check both before choosing what to change.
How to reduce an image with an online tool
- Save a copy of the original. Work on a duplicate so you can restore the full-quality file or try different settings.
- Check the destination’s requirements. Find its maximum file size, accepted formats, and any dimension or aspect-ratio rules. There is no universal upload limit.
- Choose an output format. Consider JPEG for broadly compatible lossy still images, PNG when precise reproduction or transparency is important, and WebP or AVIF when the destination supports them and you want to test a more modern format.
- Resize only if needed. If the image is larger in pixels than the intended display or upload dimensions, set a smaller width or height. Preserve the aspect ratio unless the destination specifically requires different proportions.
- Adjust compression in small increments. For lossy formats, lower quality usually means fewer bytes but more visible artifacts. Preview before accepting a setting.
- Inspect the exported file. Check fine detail, text, edges, gradients, and transparency against the original. Confirm the saved file’s dimensions, format, and byte size, then test it in the destination.
Tool interfaces differ, so use the controls actually available in the service you choose. Some list compression quality, dimensions, or output format; verify support and limits rather than assuming every tool offers the same options.

Choose a format that fits the image
Format conversion is not a guaranteed size reduction. The result depends on the source format, image content, dimensions, encoder, and settings. MDN’s image format guide identifies compression, image quality, browser support, and needs such as transparency or animation as factors in choosing a format.

Google for Developers says WebP images are “about 30% smaller in size compared to PNG and JPEG images at equivalent visual quality” in its WebP compression techniques documentation. Its WebP overview also describes lossless WebP images as 26% smaller than PNGs and lossy WebP images as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. These are format-level comparisons stated by Google, not promises for a particular file or tool; the image and conversion settings affect the outcome.
Compression, resizing, or both?
Use compression when dimensions are already right
Compression can reduce the bytes without changing width and height. Lossy compression discards some image information to save space; the stronger the compression, the greater the risk of visible quality loss. Lossless compression preserves the image data but may produce a more modest reduction. Inspect output at normal viewing size and zoom in on details that matter, such as lettering, sharp edges, or a person’s face.

Resize when the source has more pixels than the use requires
A very large original displayed in a small space may carry pixels the page does not need. Reducing its dimensions can lower file size, but it also reduces the detail available if the image is later enlarged or reused. Keep the original and avoid resizing below the destination’s actual requirement.
Try a format conversion when the destination permits it
Export a candidate format and compare its bytes and appearance with the original. Format support and transparency needs can rule out an otherwise smaller result. Google’s WebP FAQ discusses conversion guidance; neither it nor a format label can tell you in advance exactly how much an individual image will shrink.
How to hit a file-size limit without guessing
If an upload form specifies a maximum number of KB or MB, treat that as the target—not a generic recommendation from an optimizer. First use the required dimensions and a format the destination accepts. Then lower lossy quality gradually, checking the preview and exported byte count each time. If the image becomes visibly poor before it fits, check whether dimensions can be reduced, or whether another accepted format produces a better balance. Do not assume an online tool can reach an exact size without artifacts.

When a service displays decimal MB and your computer displays binary MiB, the values may not match exactly. Use the destination’s stated limit and the byte count or upload result it provides. After export, reopen the file and verify the actual size and format rather than relying on a progress bar or estimate.
Privacy and tool selection
Online image tools may process files in a browser or send them to a server. A vendor’s browser-local-processing statement is a vendor claim, not a privacy guarantee for all services. For sensitive photographs or documents, read the chosen tool’s privacy information and confirm whether files leave your device before uploading them.

Common problems and fixes
- The output is still too large: Check whether dimensions can be reduced, try a format accepted by the destination, and adjust lossy quality in small steps. Each export should be checked for visual damage.
- The image looks blurry or blocky: The compression may be too aggressive, or the image may have been resized too small. Return to the original and export again with less compression or larger dimensions.
- Transparency turned into a solid background: The selected format or export settings may not preserve transparency. Choose a format and settings that support it, then inspect the result.
- The upload rejects the file despite a small byte count: Check accepted formats, dimensions, aspect ratio, and any other destination rules; file size is only one possible requirement.
- Conversion made the file larger: The source may already be efficient for its content, or the selected encoder and settings may add overhead. Compare formats and keep the smaller acceptable result.
- You are unsure whether a file was uploaded for processing: Consult the service’s privacy information before using it for sensitive material. Do not infer local processing merely because a tool runs in a browser tab.

For a one-off image, compare the finished result with the destination requirements before paying for a tool. For repeated work, batch support and consistent controls may matter more than a single successful conversion. Does reducing image dimensions always reduce file size?
Not necessarily by a predictable amount. The exported size also depends on format, image content, and compression settings, so check the file after saving.
Can an online image compressor guarantee a specific KB target?
