To view a Git patch or diff online, open a pull request’s Files changed tab for a collaborative review, or use a standalone viewer when you have a patch file, raw diff URL, or diff text rather than a hosted pull request. The right choice depends on whether you need only a visual rendering or also comments, checks, suggestions, and merge context.

Choose a viewer based on what you need to review

Workflow Best when What you get
GitHub pull request The change is proposed in a GitHub repository and needs team review. A rendered diff alongside the pull-request conversation, commit history, checks, review actions, and merge status.
Standalone online viewer You have a patch or diff outside a pull request and want to view it in a web browser. A visual rendering without the repository’s full review workflow.
GitHub CLI You are already working in a terminal and want to inspect a pull request’s patch or open it in a browser. Pull-request diff access from the command line; GitHub CLI documents options for patch output and browser opening.
Editor or Gerrit Your team already reviews changes in an editor-based GitHub workflow or Gerrit. Diff inspection within that environment, with review controls depending on the tool and project setup.

A diff marks additions and deletions and shows surrounding context. A patch is a portable representation of changes that can be displayed or applied by compatible tools. Git’s project guidance says Git-based diff tools generate unidiff, the preferred patch format (Git: SubmittingPatches).

Review a change in a GitHub pull request

For a proposed change hosted on GitHub, the pull request is usually the most informative place to review it. Its Files changed tab is more than a patch viewer: it connects the changed lines with the discussion and the status of the proposed merge.

  1. Open the repository’s pull request.
  2. Select Files changed to inspect the changed-file diff.
  3. Choose unified or split layout according to how you prefer to compare old and new lines.
  4. Use the whitespace control when formatting-only changes obscure meaningful edits.
  5. Filter files or use the file tree to focus on specific parts of a larger change.
  6. Comment on relevant lines, suggest an edit, or submit a review when you are ready.

GitHub documents these display and review controls in its pull-request documentation (Viewing a pull request; Reviewing changes in pull requests). Use line comments for specific questions, and keep broader design or release concerns in the pull-request conversation so they are not tied to a line that may move.

Check the comparison base

The base is the version against which the proposed changes are calculated. GitHub notes that compare pages and pull-request pages can calculate changed files from different merge bases (About comparing branches in pull requests). If a file appears unexpectedly, or a change seems absent, check what branches or commits are being compared before assuming the diff is wrong.

View a patch in a standalone online viewer

A standalone online Git diff and patch viewer is useful when you have a patch but no pull request to open. SharePatch describes support for pasted diff text, editable file uploads, raw URLs, and isolating a GitHub pull-request push. Its page also lists unified Git diffs, .diff and .patch files, git format-patch output, patch series, and raw patch URLs up to 1 MB; it describes unlisted review links that do not require a repository, branch, or pull request (SharePatch). These are the vendor’s stated capabilities, not independently verified here.

  1. Prepare the patch or diff in a format the viewer says it accepts. Git’s preferred unidiff format is a reasonable default for a Git-generated patch.
  2. Paste the diff, upload the file, or provide a raw patch URL, depending on the viewer’s supported inputs.
  3. Inspect file names, hunk headers, and added or removed lines to confirm the expected changes are present.
  4. For feedback, use the viewer’s sharing or review features only after checking who can access the content and how the service handles submitted data.

A standalone viewer renders the change; it does not automatically provide the same context as a repository pull request. Do not treat an unlisted link as proof that private code is confidential. The SharePatch page cited above does not establish its retention or confidentiality terms, so check its current policy before uploading sensitive code.

Inspect a pull-request diff with GitHub CLI or an editor

GitHub CLI

GitHub CLI documents gh pr diff to display a pull-request diff, with options including patch format and opening the pull request in a browser (GitHub CLI: gh pr diff). From a terminal authenticated for the relevant repository, run:

gh pr diff 123

Replace 123 with the pull-request number. To check the available output and browser options for your installed CLI version, use:

gh pr diff --help

This is convenient for a quick inspection or scripted workflow. For line comments, suggestions, and the full review state, open the pull request itself in the browser.

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code documents workflows for reviewing GitHub repositories and inspecting file diffs with comments (Visual Studio Code: GitHub in Visual Studio Code). This can keep review close to the code editor, while the hosted pull request remains the place to see the broader conversation and merge context.

Gerrit

Gerrit’s documented interface presents patch changes in a side-by-side view and supports comparing patch sets against a base (Gerrit review UI). This is relevant when the project’s review process is already organized around Gerrit rather than GitHub.

Read the diff without losing important context

  • Separate behavior from formatting. Hiding whitespace differences can make logic changes easier to see, but restore whitespace visibility if formatting itself is under review.
  • Follow the full hunk. Added and deleted lines are easiest to misread when considered without the surrounding context shown by the diff.
  • Check file navigation. In a large change, filter files or use the file tree rather than relying on the first visible hunk.
  • Confirm the base and commits. Changed-file lists depend on what is being compared; verify the intended target branch or patch set.
  • Use the right review channel. A standalone renderer may be enough to inspect a patch, but a pull request or Gerrit review carries discussion and project status alongside the changes.

Git’s documentation describes options that alter diff output and notes that word-diff output may produce a larger diff than a dedicated word-diff tool (Git: git-diff). If line-level changes are hard to interpret, consider whether the selected output mode is helping or making the comparison noisier.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media; it is not a Git patch renderer. If you need a visual capture of a web page that documents or hosts a review, one GET request can return an image or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://github.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. This captures a web page; it does not interpret or review a Git patch. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Common problems and fixes

The standalone viewer rejects the input

Check that the input is a supported diff or patch format and that the file or raw URL is within the viewer’s stated limits. For SharePatch, the vendor page lists raw patch URLs up to 1 MB; it does not establish a universal size limit for every input type. If the source is a GitHub pull request, use Files changed or gh pr diff instead of trying to turn the review into a standalone upload.

The diff appears empty or incomplete

Check that the URL points to raw patch content rather than a normal web page, that the patch includes its file and hunk headers, and that the intended commits or base are selected. For a pull request, compare its target branch and merge base with the comparison you expected.

Whitespace changes overwhelm the review

Toggle the whitespace display control in GitHub’s diff view. This can expose substantive edits, but do not leave whitespace ignored when formatting changes matter to the review.

A private patch is being sent to a third party

Pause before uploading. Review the service’s current access, retention, and confidentiality terms, and use the repository’s approved review workflow if those terms are unclear or unsuitable. A share link being unlisted does not, by itself, establish privacy.

FAQ

Is a patch viewer the same as a pull request?

No. A viewer renders changes; a pull request adds repository discussion, review actions, checks, and merge context.

Which display is easier to read: unified or split?

That depends on the change and reviewer. Unified presents old and new lines in one flow; split places them side by side. Switch views when one makes a replacement or surrounding context easier to follow.

Can I use a screenshot API to review a patch?

No. A screenshot API captures a rendered web page; it does not parse a Git patch or replace a diff viewer.
