The Onkyo TX-SR343 is a 2015-era, five-channel receiver that can still serve a basic 5.1 system and pass 4K video at up to 60 Hz. It is not a modern 4K hub: Onkyo does not list HDR support, and the receiver lacks Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI 2.1, eARC, network streaming, and automatic speaker calibration. Consider it only as an inexpensive, tested used receiver for conventional surround sound.
What the Onkyo TX-SR343 is
The TX-SR343 is an entry-level home-theater A/V receiver introduced in 2015. It switches audio and video sources and powers five passive speakers: front left and right, center, and surround left and right. A separate powered subwoofer connects to its subwoofer pre-out. It is a conventional 5.1-channel design, not a 7.1 receiver or an upgrade platform for height speakers.
Onkyo still provides support information for the model, but it is effectively a discontinued product. Buyers should expect to shop the used market rather than treat it as a current new receiver.

Specifications and ratings vary by region. The North American figures above come from Onkyo’s product sheet. Do not compare its 65-watt rating directly with a listing that says 100 or 110 watts: impedance, frequency range, distortion, number of driven channels, and regional test standards differ.

What it supports—and what it does not
Audio
The receiver decodes common disc and broadcast formats including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS. The manual also specifies DSD and multichannel PCM over HDMI. It does not decode Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Its five powered channels also rule out a native 7.1 or height-speaker setup.
HDMI and video
Four HDMI inputs accommodate sources such as a Blu-ray player, cable box, game console, and streaming player; a single HDMI output connects to the TV. Onkyo specifies 4K/60 pass-through and HDCP 2.2. The receiver can also convert composite and component video sources to HDMI, including 480i/576i material.
“4K” here does not mean full compatibility with current high-end displays and consoles. Onkyo does not list HDR support, and the unit does not have HDMI 2.1, 4K/120, 8K, VRR, ALLM, or 4K upscaling. It also has ARC, not eARC. If picture quality or a source’s video mode is uncertain, connect that source directly to the TV and send audio separately to the receiver.

In addition to HDMI, the rear panel provides component-video and composite-video connections, optical digital inputs, one coaxial digital input, and analog RCA inputs. There is also a front-panel auxiliary analog/composite input, a headphone output, one subwoofer pre-out, and an RI remote-control connection. Consult the owner’s manual for the panel labels and detailed connection diagrams.

Bluetooth is built in for playback from a paired phone, tablet, or computer. The manual identifies Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.5, and SBC support. Bluetooth is not network streaming: the receiver has no listed Wi-Fi, Ethernet, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, or Onkyo network-streaming platform. Use an external streaming player connected to an HDMI input for services and apps.
There is a documentation wrinkle around USB. The manual labels the rear USB connection as a 5 V/1 A power output for a streaming box, while Onkyo’s product feature table separately mentions USB-memory playback. Because the documentation is inconsistent, do not assume the USB port will play audio from a flash drive; confirm operation for the exact regional unit and manual revision.
How to connect a basic 5.1 system
- Connect the front-left, front-right, center, surround-left, and surround-right passive speakers to their matching speaker terminals. Use speakers within the stated 6–16-ohm range.
- Connect a powered subwoofer’s line input to the receiver’s subwoofer pre-out using an RCA subwoofer cable. Set the subwoofer’s power and input appropriately. The pre-out does not power a passive subwoofer.
- Connect source devices to the receiver’s HDMI inputs. The labeled STRM BOX input is a sensible choice for an external streaming player.
- Connect the HDMI output labeled “to TV” to the television’s ARC-capable HDMI socket if you want to use ARC for TV audio.
- Set the receiver to the appropriate input and configure the TV and receiver’s ARC/CEC settings as needed. Exact menu labels can vary by TV.
If the TV lacks ARC or ARC proves unreliable, connect the TV’s optical digital output to an optical input on the receiver and select that input for TV audio. For a streaming player powered from the receiver’s USB output, check the player’s power requirement first; the port is specified as 5 V/1 A and may not suit every device.
Bluetooth pairing
The general process is to select Bluetooth on the receiver, put it in pairing mode, find the Onkyo receiver in the phone or computer’s Bluetooth list, select it, and start playback. The exact button sequence and on-screen prompts can depend on the unit and manual revision, so use the owner’s manual for the controls on your specific receiver.

Common problems and checks
No picture or an HDMI black screen
An HDMI pass-through problem can involve an HDCP negotiation, a source video mode, cable quality or length, CEC conflicts, or a fault in the receiver or another device. Try this sequence:
- Disconnect the HDMI sources and connect only the receiver to the TV. Verify that the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Use a known-good high-speed HDMI cable and add one source at a time.
- Temporarily turn off CEC/HDMI control and HDR on the source, if those settings are available.
- Test the source connected directly to the TV. If direct connection works but receiver pass-through does not, the receiver may be the limiting point in that chain.
This is a troubleshooting path, not evidence that every TX-SR343 has a particular HDMI defect. A direct-to-TV connection is also the more practical choice for formats the receiver does not list, such as HDR.
ARC does not return TV sound
Confirm that both devices support ARC, the cable is connected to the TV’s ARC-labeled HDMI socket, and CEC/RIHD and ARC are enabled where required. Set the receiver to TV and the television’s sound output to ARC or receiver. If it still does not work, use optical audio as the fallback. ARC should not be confused with eARC.
No sound from the subwoofer
Check that the subwoofer is powered on, the RCA lead runs from the receiver’s subwoofer pre-out to the subwoofer’s correct input, and the speaker configuration and crossover settings are appropriate. The source must also contain bass that the receiver can route to the subwoofer. A passive subwoofer cannot be driven from the pre-out.

Missing remote or calibration microphone
Onkyo’s product sheet lists a remote among the supplied accessories, so ask whether it is included and test it if possible. A missing remote can make setup and menu access less convenient. The receiver does not list automatic speaker calibration or an included calibration microphone; do not buy one expecting a current auto-calibration workflow.

It makes sense if you want inexpensive, ordinary 5.1 sound; already have compatible passive speakers and a powered subwoofer; do not need HDR or modern gaming features; and can test the receiver or return it. It may also suit a 1080p setup or a basic 4K/60 system where the receiver’s video limitations are acceptable. An external streaming player fills the gap left by its lack of network features.
Choose a newer receiver instead if you need Atmos or DTS:X, more than five powered channels, HDR10 or Dolby Vision compatibility, HDMI 2.1, 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, eARC, built-in network streaming, two HDMI outputs, or microphone-based room correction. Those features matter more than a headline wattage number if you expect to build a system around current TVs, consoles, and streaming devices.

There is no dependable single market price. In the research snapshot, one listing was $74.95 plus shipping, a sold example was $89.59, and other asks were roughly $200–$430. Those are individual listings, not a market average; high asking prices do not establish what buyers actually pay. The examples are visible at this listing, this sold listing, and the product page.
- Under about $100 before shipping: potentially attractive if the receiver is fully tested and suits your setup.
- About $100–$150: look for a working remote, confirmed HDMI operation, clean behavior, and a return option.
- Above $150: compare with newer used receivers; missing HDR, immersive formats, room correction, and networking make the older unit harder to justify.
- $200 or more: usually weak value unless condition, accessories, local support, or a useful bundle makes it exceptional.
These are buying thresholds, not verified average prices. Add shipping and any needed remote, cables, powered subwoofer, or external streamer to the total. Because receivers are heavy, shipping can change the deal substantially.
Used-buying checklist
- Test all four HDMI inputs and the HDMI output with a source and display.
- Verify sound from all five speaker channels and test Bluetooth pairing.
- Check ARC if you expect to use it; otherwise confirm the optical fallback works for your TV.
- Inspect for overheating, unusual fan noise, repeated relay clicks, distortion, or intermittent shutdown.
- Confirm that the remote is included or that a compatible replacement is practical.
- Check the rear-panel voltage before importing. Regional versions differ in voltage, tuner ranges, ratings, and other specifications; never connect a 120 V North American unit directly to a 220–240 V supply.
- Prefer a local test or a meaningful return policy, especially for an older HDMI receiver.
Verdict
The TX-SR343 remains useful for one narrow job: powering a simple 5.1 system while switching several HDMI sources and passing 4K/60 video. Buy it only at a price that reflects its age and limitations. If HDR, Atmos, modern gaming, networking, or room correction matter, a newer used receiver is the better long-term choice.
