OnePlus announced the end of its Hasselblad collaboration on September 5, 2025—before the OnePlus 15 launched. The phone, introduced in North America on November 13, is the first major flagship presented around OnePlus’s own DetailMax Engine rather than Hasselblad branding. That is a change in partnership and imaging strategy, not proof on its own that the camera is worse.
The timeline: partnership first, OnePlus 15 second
- March 8, 2021: OnePlus announced a three-year camera partnership with Hasselblad, beginning with the OnePlus 9 series.
- September 5, 2025: OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced that the collaboration had reached its planned conclusion. OnePlus described it as a five-year collaboration.
- November 13, 2025: The OnePlus 15 launched in North America with DetailMax Engine as its imaging platform.
The distinction matters: the OnePlus 15 did not trigger the announcement. It is instead the first major flagship to show what OnePlus is doing after the partnership. What Hasselblad contributed
The collaboration was more than putting a camera company’s name on a phone or adding a set of filters. OnePlus described joint work on color calibration, sensor and lens assessment, camera-system development, computational photography, and longer-term imaging technologies. Hasselblad contributed color-science expertise and aesthetic direction, while the companies’ engineering and research teams worked together on imaging.
That history does not mean every OnePlus camera feature was developed by Hasselblad, nor does ending the collaboration establish that every idea or lesson from it has vanished. OnePlus said Hasselblad’s aesthetic sense and experience had become part of its imaging DNA. That is the company’s account of the transition; it is not a technical inventory of which components, processes, or tuning methods continue.

What replaces the branding: DetailMax Engine
OnePlus now markets its in-house DetailMax Engine as the basis for its computational imaging. The company says the system is designed for clearer, more natural-looking photographs and to retain detail when users zoom in. On the OnePlus 15, it highlights three features:
- Ultra Clear 26MP: Combines image data to produce detailed daylight photos.
- Clear Burst: Uses dual-exposure processing to reduce motion blur in burst shots.
- Clear Night Engine: Aims to improve low-light clarity and reduce noise.
These are OnePlus’s descriptions of the system’s goals and features, not independent proof that DetailMax outperforms Hasselblad-tuned processing. A new processing brand also cannot, by itself, make unlike sensors, lenses, stabilization systems, or zoom ranges equivalent.
OnePlus 15 camera hardware and headline features
OnePlus’s North American materials describe a rear system with three 50-megapixel cameras. The company lists a 50MP Sony IMX906 main camera with optical image stabilization, a 50MP autofocus ultrawide camera with a 116-degree field of view, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera. The telephoto offers 3.5× optical zoom and a stated 7× high-quality zoom mode.

Not necessarily—and the partnership ending alone cannot answer the image-quality question. The OnePlus 15 changes both its processing platform and camera configuration, so a fair comparison must consider the hardware as well as the software. Useful checks include color and skin tones, HDR and highlight handling, shadow noise, motion capture, portrait edges, video quality, and detail at 3.5×, 7×, and higher zoom levels.
A reviewer at Android Central judged the OnePlus 15’s camera competitive despite the absence of Hasselblad tuning. That is a reviewer assessment, not a universal verdict or a controlled consensus across every rival phone and shooting condition. OnePlus’s claims about DetailMax should likewise be distinguished from independent results.
For a buyer, the useful question is not whether the phone carries a camera-brand logo, but whether its results suit the photos and videos they actually take. Prefer natural or vivid color? Shoot moving subjects, people, nighttime scenes, or distant details? Compare real samples in those situations, at the same focal lengths and with comparable software, rather than relying on megapixel counts or a mode name.

The end of the collaboration does not mean older phones automatically lose Hasselblad-branded features or existing camera tuning. The available announcements do not establish a universal policy to remove those features from OnePlus 9–13 devices. Owners should expect current functions to depend on their model’s software support, firmware, region, and camera-app version.
Nor is there a promise that DetailMax features will be backported to older phones. Do not assume that new features will arrive—or that existing ones will disappear—without a model-specific software announcement. Older OxygenOS documentation, for example, described XPAN mode as using the classic Hasselblad XPAN camera’s 65:24 aspect ratio; that reference does not establish the current feature list for every device or region.
OnePlus’s move is not OPPO’s move
OnePlus ending its own Hasselblad-branded collaboration does not mean Hasselblad has left the wider OPPO ecosystem. OPPO announced in 2026 that it would continue its strategic Hasselblad partnership for its flagship Find series. That is a separate product strategy: the public information does not establish that OPPO’s Hasselblad work and OnePlus’s DetailMax Engine use the same algorithms, sensors, or tuning. OPPO’s announcement describes its own relationship.
What the change means for buyers
The OnePlus 15 is positioned around performance, gaming, battery life, and computational imaging as well as photography. DetailMax gives OnePlus more direct control over its imaging roadmap, while the switch removes the Hasselblad name and the signal of an active outside camera-brand collaboration. Neither point establishes how the phone will compare in every photographic situation.
If camera performance is your main reason to buy, weigh independent samples and reviews more heavily than either brand. Pay particular attention to your preferred color rendering, night and portrait performance, motion handling, zoom needs, and video workflow. If your priorities also include the phone’s other features, assess those separately; camera branding alone is not a reliable shorthand for overall value.
