ogimg/ogimg is an Apache-2.0, open-source Next.js project for creating branded Open Graph images. You can clone it, install its dependencies, and run its landing page locally today. However, the repository README currently says the /editor route is linked in the interface but not implemented yet. That means the advertised template-and-export workflow is planned, not a working feature in the current repository.

What is the OG Image Generator on GitHub?

The project is the ogimg/ogimg GitHub repository, described by its README as “The OG image generator for everyone. shipped fast.” It is source code for a web application, not a packaged desktop utility or a physical product. The project links to ogimg.art and uses Next.js to provide a modern interface for creating link-preview graphics.

Open Graph (OG) images are the preview pictures shown when a page is shared in services such as social networks, chat applications, and collaboration tools. A consistent image normally includes a page title, brand colors, typography, and sometimes a logo or product illustration. ogimg/ogimg is intended to make that design process repeatable instead of requiring a separate graphics application for every page.

Current status: landing page, not a working editor

The most important qualification is in the repository’s own status note: the landing page is live, while the editor route (/editor) is linked in the UI but “not implemented yet (cooking).” You can inspect and run the application, but you should not expect a functioning template picker, live canvas, or PNG export from the current codebase.

What is available now

  • A Next.js application with a landing page.
  • Dark-mode support.
  • The documented front-end stack and local development workflow.
  • Source code that you can study, modify, and deploy under Apache License 2.0.

What is not established by the repository

  • A usable public editor route.
  • A production image-generation API.
  • Documented caching, authentication, job queues, or image storage.
  • Production-grade rendering guarantees or a supported hosted generation service.

The README describes the intended flow—choose a template, add a title or branding, adjust colors and fonts, and export a PNG—but labels the editor as coming soon. Treat that flow as project direction until the implementation lands.

Technology stack and prerequisites

The repository is a standard Next.js application using the App Router. Its documented stack includes Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4, Radix UI, shadcn/ui, next-themes, Motion, and Biome. These versions are time-sensitive; use the lockfile and package manifest in the clone as the authoritative dependency set.

Install requirements

  • Node.js 18 or newer; Node.js 20 or newer is recommended by the README.
  • One package manager: pnpm, npm, yarn, or bun.
  • Git, if you are cloning the repository.

Install and run ogimg/ogimg locally

Use the following workflow from a terminal. The commands below follow the project’s documented pnpm and npm options.

  1. Clone the repository:
    git clone https://github.com/ogimg/ogimg.git
  2. Enter the project directory:
    cd ogimg
  3. Install dependencies with pnpm:
    pnpm install

    Or use npm:

    npm install
  4. Start the development server with pnpm:
    pnpm dev

    Or use npm:

    npm run dev
  5. Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser.

If the page does not load, check that the terminal process is still running and that another application is not already using port 3000. Next.js will normally print an alternate local URL when it selects another port.

How the planned editor workflow should be understood

The documented design flow is useful for understanding the project’s goal, but it is not a current operating procedure. When the editor is implemented, the stated sequence is:

  1. Choose a template.
  2. Add a title, brand name, or other content.
  3. Adjust colors and fonts.
  4. Export a PNG.

Until then, generating a real OG image requires another renderer or a custom implementation. You can still use the repository as a starting point: extend its routes and components, add a rendering endpoint, or connect a browser-based capture service after designing the interface.

Build and deploy the project on Vercel

The README identifies Vercel as a clean deployment target. A typical production check is:

  1. Install dependencies with pnpm install or npm install.
  2. Create a production build:
    pnpm build

    or:

    npm run build
  3. Start the built application locally if needed:
    pnpm start

    or:

    npm start
  4. Connect the GitHub repository to Vercel and deploy using the detected Next.js settings.

A successful deployment publishes the application that exists in the repository. It does not make the unimplemented /editor route available. Confirm the route and any image endpoint in your deployed commit before directing users to it.

License and reuse

ogimg/ogimg is released under the Apache License 2.0. That permissive license generally allows reuse, modification, and redistribution subject to its notice and license conditions. Read the repository’s license file before shipping a modified service, especially if you redistribute source or binaries and add your own dependencies with different terms.

How it compares with related open-source projects

The most useful comparison is feature readiness rather than repository popularity. The current ogimg/ogimg material documents a landing page and a planned editor; it does not document a working generation API. Other projects take different technical approaches.

Project Editor or output documented Rendering and automation License/deployment notes
ogimg/ogimg Landing page; /editor not implemented yet Next.js source; no generation API documented Apache-2.0; README names Vercel
SavvyCal og-image Extensible HTML/CSS templates Puppeteer and headless Chrome screenshots; caching documented Elixir, Chrome, and Node.js 22 or later; Fly deployment documented
OGCOPS 109 templates and 8 platform previews (2026 repository snapshot); URL-encoded editor state Client-side Satori rendering; URL API returns 1200×630 PNG MIT; self-hostable on Node.js platforms
Generate OG Image GitHub Action Generates images from Markdown front matter on pull requests Configurable title, subtitle, image URL, colors, font size, output path, and ignore patterns Version 3.0.0 in the 2026 Marketplace listing; not GitHub-certified and subject to separate terms

These are not interchangeable claims. Browser screenshots can reproduce complex HTML/CSS but require a browser runtime; Satori-style rendering is usually more constrained but can be easier to run in a serverless environment. The GitHub Action is an automation component, not a general-purpose editor. Choose based on whether you need an interactive design surface, a URL API, repository automation, or a self-hosted renderer.

Common setup problems and fixes

Unsupported Node.js version

Symptom: installation or build errors involving syntax, engines, or missing platform features. Fix: upgrade to Node.js 18 or newer, preferably Node.js 20 or newer, then remove and reinstall dependencies.

Package-manager mismatch

Symptom: a lockfile warning or inconsistent dependency resolution. Fix: use the package manager associated with the repository’s lockfile. If you choose npm instead of pnpm, run the documented npm commands consistently rather than mixing lockfiles.

Port 3000 is occupied

Symptom: the development server cannot bind to port 3000. Fix: stop the process using that port or accept the alternate URL printed by Next.js.

The editor link shows no editor

Symptom: navigating to /editor does not provide template controls or export. Fix: this matches the repository’s stated status; use the landing page for inspection and wait for or implement the editor rather than treating the link as a finished feature.

Vercel deployment succeeds but image generation is absent

Symptom: the deployed site looks like the landing page but cannot create PNGs. Fix: verify which routes exist in the commit you deployed. Vercel hosts the Next.js code; it does not add an image renderer that the repository has not implemented.

If your immediate need is a reliable screenshot or rendered image rather than experimenting with an unfinished editor, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/. cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. It supports full-page and element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and PDF output. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can I use ogimg/ogimg without installing Node.js?

Not for the documented local workflow. The project is a Next.js source repository and requires Node.js plus a package manager to run locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Apache-2.0 mean I can remove the project’s branding?

The license permits broad reuse subject to its conditions, but branding, notices, and any dependency licenses still require careful review.

Is ogimg.art the same thing as a completed hosted editor?

The repository links to ogimg.art, but its README explicitly says the editor route is not implemented. Verify the hosted site’s current behavior before relying on it for production generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What output size should an OG image use?

The ogimg/ogimg README does not specify an output dimension. Set a size appropriate to the platform you target and verify the resulting preview in that platform.

Can I add an image-generation API to ogimg/ogimg?

Yes, the repository is open source, so you can extend the Next.js app. The current documentation does not provide an API, storage model, or queue; those are implementation decisions you would need to make.

Which alternative is designed for pull-request automation?

The third-party Generate OG Image GitHub Action reads Markdown front matter on pull requests and writes an image according to its configured options. Its 2026 Marketplace listing says it is not GitHub-certified.

The Bottom Line

ogimg/ogimg is a promising, reusable Next.js foundation, but today it is chiefly a landing page and codebase: the linked editor is not implemented. Clone it to study or extend the project, deploy it to Vercel when the existing routes meet your needs, and use a separate renderer such as ScreenshotNeo when you need working captures now.
