Observability Day North America 2026 is scheduled for November 9, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah, alongside KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America. It is a CNCF-hosted, Linux Foundation event focused on cloud-native observability projects and real-world engineering—not a general Kubernetes track or a standalone vendor showcase. “Observability Day” is also used for other regional and archived editions. Europe’s 2026 event took place March 23 in Amsterdam, so confirm the region and year when following an event link.
What is Observability Day?
Observability Day is a recurring, region-specific gathering for the cloud-native observability community, hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) through Linux Foundation Events and co-located with KubeCon + CloudNativeCon. It brings together maintainers, operators, developers, platform teams, and engineering leaders to discuss how telemetry is collected and used to understand production systems.

Its scope is narrower than KubeCon’s overall Kubernetes and cloud-native program. The event’s stated positioning is vendor-neutral and community-oriented, with attention to open-source projects and practical experience. That does not mean sponsors or commercial products are absent: assess each session on its content and disclosures rather than assuming every talk is independent of commercial interests.

- Developers instrumenting services and trying to make traces, metrics, and logs more useful during debugging.

- Project maintainers and contributors interested in implementation details, interoperability, and community practices.
- Engineering leaders weighing reliability needs, open-source and commercial approaches, and the cost of telemetry at scale.
It is less likely to suit someone looking only for beginner-level monitoring instruction, a hands-on certification course, a general Kubernetes introduction, or vendor procurement demos. The 2026 topic description leans toward production systems, architectures, and operational trade-offs; beginners may still find useful sessions, but should review the final agenda before committing.

What topics and projects are in scope?
The 2026 North America page describes areas of interest, not a guaranteed final session list. Its themes include project deep dives; telemetry pipelines and data engineering; observability cost, quality, scale, and efficiency; AI and large-language-model observability; eBPF and zero-code instrumentation; CI/CD, platform, and developer-experience observability; production deployments and migrations; and cross-project architecture and correlation.
The event names communities and projects including Prometheus, Fluentd, Fluent Bit, OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, Thanos, Cortex, Perses, Pixie, Kepler, and Inspektor Gadget. A project’s appearance in the event description does not guarantee a session about it. Check the published agenda for confirmed talks.
From telemetry collection to useful signals
Telemetry pipelines concern how metrics, logs, and traces are collected, transformed, sampled, routed, stored, and queried. Collectors, agents, gateways, and backends each have different responsibilities. A useful architecture must preserve the context needed for debugging while controlling data volume, access, and operational complexity.

Cost, scale, and signal quality
More data is not automatically better observability. High-cardinality metrics can increase storage and query costs; retaining every trace or log indefinitely can overwhelm budgets and systems. Teams need decisions about sampling, retention, downsampling, and what to discard. The practical question is whether telemetry helps teams detect and resolve problems—not just how much they collect.
eBPF, platform engineering, and delivery pipelines
eBPF can provide visibility from the kernel and support instrumentation approaches that require less application-code change. That can be valuable, but it does not remove the need to decide what to observe, how to interpret the data, and how to manage overhead and access. Platform and CI/CD observability extend the same thinking to shared developer platforms and software delivery workflows.
AI and agent observability
The topic description includes AI and LLM observability, but does not define a specific framework or promise particular sessions. Relevant engineering questions can include how to trace model calls, tool use, retrieval steps, latency, failures, and usage; how to correlate those steps across distributed workflows; and how to redact sensitive data. Treat these as useful questions to bring, not as a guaranteed agenda.

Registration: check the pass carefully
The event page says that an All-Access In-Person KubeCon + CloudNativeCon pass includes access to all CNCF-hosted co-located events as well as KubeCon + CloudNativeCon. This makes Observability Day convenient for people already attending the main conference, but it may be a poor-value reason by itself to buy a broader pass. Compare the current pass price and terms with the value of the full KubeCon program you expect to use.
Before registering, confirm whether a standalone or virtual option is available, the precise access conditions, venue and badge requirements, cancellation or transfer rules, and whether any discounts apply. The event information cited here does not establish those details or current ticket prices.

The CFP for the 2026 North American edition is closed; its deadline was June 21, 2026. The page lists three formats: presentations of 25 minutes for one or two speakers, panels of 35 minutes for three to five speakers, and 10-minute lightning talks with a maximum of one speaker. Panel proposals must meet stated representation requirements: panels cannot be all-male, and speakers must represent at least three different organizations. For a future proposal, a clear production problem, the constraints and architecture, measurable results, and candid lessons—including failures and trade-offs—are more useful than a product pitch. That is practical editorial advice, not a promise about future CFP rules; follow the next call’s criteria.

Sponsorship is separate from attendee registration, and no package prices or specific benefits are established here; request the current prospectus rather than relying on assumptions.
Is it worth attending?
Consider going if you already plan to attend KubeCon, operate Prometheus or OpenTelemetry at meaningful scale, are redesigning telemetry pipelines, or need practical perspectives on cost, reliability, eBPF, or AI-related observability. The community and project focus can also help you understand how components fit together beyond the interface of a single observability platform.

Consider skipping it if you need hands-on training, want a buyer-only conference, have little connection to cloud-native systems, or would be paying for a full KubeCon pass solely to attend one day. Also reconsider if the final agenda lacks the projects or operational problems relevant to your team. Open-source tools can offer flexibility and portability, but self-managed collection, storage, upgrades, security, and retention require engineering effort. Hosted commercial services may reduce that burden, but can introduce usage-based costs and vendor-specific workflows. Observability Day is useful for evaluating those trade-offs, not a substitute for a procurement comparison.
How to get more from the day
- Check the final agenda. Topic categories are not confirmed sessions; prioritize talks that match your stack and current problems.
- Bring one concrete operational question. Examples include controlling metric cardinality, deciding trace sampling rates, reducing ingestion costs, or correlating signals across services.
- Map your current architecture. Note where instrumentation, collectors, gateways, storage, dashboards, and alerting sit, along with ownership and retention policies.
- Look for measurable lessons. Ask what changed, how results were measured, and which constraints would make the approach unsuitable for your environment.
- Check post-event materials by edition. Archived editions may provide recordings or speaker presentations, but availability is not guaranteed for every year.
Other editions and archives
Observability Day Europe 2026 took place on March 23 in Amsterdam and is over. North America 2025 was held November 10 in Atlanta. Earlier North American editions include Salt Lake City in 2024.
