It also reported 118 false positives and 12 knives among 2,749 scans. The results show a noisy, limited trial—not enough evidence to prove that the system “failed miserably,” nor enough to show that it reliably detected weapons or improved safety.
What the pilot actually found
The figures come from NYPD, as reported by the Associated Press in October 2024:

“Zero guns” therefore means zero firearms detected in the reported pilot results. It does not mean investigators proved that nobody with a gun entered a scanned station or that the equipment had a zero false-negative rate.
Why 118 false positives matter
A false positive is an alarm that does not correspond to the weapon the system is intended to identify. In this pilot, 118 alarms occurred in 2,749 scans, or about one alarm for every 23 scans. Each alarm can require an officer to stop, question or otherwise investigate a rider, adding friction and consuming staff time.

That percentage is a description of this sample, not a universal error rate. The available report does not identify what triggered each alert, whether alarms were concentrated at particular stations or times, how long secondary checks took, or how many officers were assigned to the devices.
What the numbers cannot tell us
The public summary lacks the controls needed for a full accuracy assessment. It does not provide:

- a verified list of weapons carried by everyone who passed through the scanners;
- the number of firearms or other weapons the system failed to detect;
- the test conditions, device settings or screening protocol;
- the number of riders who declined scanning;
- scan duration, throughput, staffing requirements or operating cost; or
- evidence that the pilot changed subway crime, weapon carrying or rider safety.
Without that information, analysts cannot calculate sensitivity, a firearm-specific false-negative rate, or the pilot’s net security benefit. A system can produce no positive firearm detections because it works well in a low-risk sample, because it misses weapons, or because few people carrying firearms were scanned. The reported totals alone cannot distinguish among those explanations.
This was a limited pilot, not a permanent subway rollout
In March 2024, the city announced a 90-day process to identify vendors and test technology intended to keep firearms and other weapons out of the transit system. Equipment from Evolv was demonstrated at that announcement, but a demonstration should not be treated as proof that the same configuration produced the later pilot results.

In July, the mayor described the equipment as an “electromagnetic detection system” for selected stations and said riders could refuse a scan. That policy matters when interpreting the sample: the 2,749 scans do not necessarily represent every person entering those stations, and the available account does not state how many people declined.
How to interpret the “AI scanner” label
Coverage often calls these devices AI weapons scanners. The city’s official wording in the July announcement was “electromagnetic detection system.” That description identifies the detection approach but does not, by itself, establish how much artificial intelligence was used, which models were deployed, or what objects the software was trained to classify.

The practical question is not the label. It is whether a specified configuration detects prohibited weapons under representative conditions, limits unnecessary alarms, moves riders through quickly and produces a measurable safety benefit. The published pilot summary does not answer those questions.

The Associated Press also reported federal regulatory scrutiny and investor-litigation allegations involving Evolv. Those are reported investigations and allegations, not findings that the New York pilot missed guns or caused the 118 false positives. They should be assessed separately from the NYPD’s station-by-station operating results.

What a credible follow-up evaluation would need
A stronger trial would publish a defined test protocol and enough operational data for independent review. At minimum, it should report:
- Ground truth: controlled scenarios or independently verified searches establishing which weapons were present for each test.
- Misses and alarms: firearms and other weapons detected, weapons missed, false alarms and the reason for each secondary check.
- Coverage: the number of people who refused, were excluded or passed through outside the device’s operating window.
- Operations: scan time, queue effects, staffing, maintenance and cost per screened rider.
- Policy: what happens after an alarm, what searches are permitted and how privacy and civil-liberties protections work.
- Safety outcomes: a comparison with similar stations or periods that tests whether screening changed weapon seizures, assaults or other relevant measures.
Comparisons with other scanners are meaningful only when they use the same axes: test conditions, verified weapons present, detections and misses, false alarms per scan, throughput, refusal rates, staffing, cost, search policy and measured safety impact.
Bottom line for subway riders
The NYC pilot produced a striking headline: NYPD reported zero detected firearms, 118 false positives and 12 knives in 2,749 scans over 30 days at 20 stations. Those figures justify scrutiny of the system’s usefulness and operating burden. They do not establish the device’s overall accuracy, prove that it missed a particular number of guns, or demonstrate that it made the subway safer. Until the city publishes ground-truth testing, refusal and staffing data, and evidence of real-world safety effects, the most defensible conclusion is that this was an inconclusive and operationally noisy pilot.
