NVIDIA Signs is a real, free, browser-based platform for practicing American Sign Language (ASL) with webcam feedback. But its headline “over 1,000 signs” claim needs qualification: NVIDIA announced a goal of building a dataset representing 1,000 signed words, while its initial learner experience was described as covering 100 signs. The current public site does not clearly confirm that learners can presently study more than 1,000 signs.
What is NVIDIA Signs?
Signs combines two related projects:
- Learn: beginners watch a digital human or avatar demonstrate individual ASL signs, then use a webcam to practice and receive automated feedback.
- Contribute: users can record themselves signing requested words for an ASL video dataset intended to support future accessibility and sign-recognition technologies.
That makes Signs more than a digital dictionary. It is simultaneously a beginner learning tool, a computer-vision demonstration and a community-powered data-collection project.
NVIDIA leads the data and annotation effort. The American Society for Deaf Children provides guidance and helps verify and validate signs, while Hello Monday/DEPT® designed, developed and maintains the web platform. NVIDIA also says fluent ASL users, interpreters and other contributors are involved.

How to use Signs to practice ASL
- Open signs-ai.com.
- Choose Start Learning or Learn ASL.
- Select a sign or learning level.
- Watch the digital human demonstrate the sign.
- Allow browser access to your webcam.
- Sign in the camera frame and review the feedback.
- Repeat the sign or continue to the next lesson.
The interface includes a tutorial and a Swap Hands control. Labels and screens may change as the platform develops, but the basic process is visual demonstration followed by camera-based practice.

The feedback is mainly intended to assess the visible form of an individual sign—particularly hand shape, finger position and movement. It should not be treated as an expert evaluation of complete ASL communication.
Does NVIDIA Signs really teach more than 1,000 signs?
Not on the evidence currently available from NVIDIA’s public pages. NVIDIA’s February 20, 2025 announcement described a long-term dataset target of 400,000 video clips representing 1,000 signed words. The same announcement described the initial learning experience as containing 100 signs.

The important distinction is between dataset size and course size. A dataset may contain many recordings of the same word, and a target vocabulary of 1,000 signed words does not automatically mean the learner interface offers 1,000 fully taught signs. The safest description is that NVIDIA is building toward a 1,000-word ASL dataset while Signs currently provides foundational learning material.
What the AI can—and cannot—evaluate
ASL is a complete natural language with its own grammar. It is not English expressed through hand gestures, and it is not interchangeable with every other sign language.
Signs’ initial computer-vision focus is on the hands and fingers. That can be useful for helping a beginner notice basic hand shape and movement, but ASL also uses:

- facial expressions;
- eyebrow and eye movement;
- head movement;
- body posture;
- signing location and spatial relationships;
- timing and movement direction;
- grammatical context and conversational structure.
NVIDIA has acknowledged that non-manual signals are important and has described future expansion of the project. A more recent NVIDIA GTC 2026 session also indicates that the project remained active and discussed a digital human with non-manual signals. That does not turn the current tool into a complete ASL tutor or interpreter.
A learner can reproduce a broadly correct hand shape while still producing an awkward, incomplete or contextually inappropriate expression. AI feedback should therefore be treated as practice assistance—not as final linguistic authority.

The Signs website says its vocabulary is aligned with teaching curricula and that signs are reviewed by native Deaf signers, community reviewers and certified interpreters. That validation process is an important strength, but it is not a guarantee that every sign will match every community or situation.
ASL varies by region, age, community and context. A sign may be widely accepted in one setting but unfamiliar or less preferred in another. If the AI’s assessment conflicts with a qualified teacher or Deaf signer, do not assume the automated result is correct.
Signs is for ASL, not sign languages generally
Signs focuses specifically on American Sign Language. Its lessons should not be generalized to British Sign Language, Auslan, French Sign Language or other national and regional sign languages. Those languages have their own vocabularies, grammar and cultural contexts.

This also matters for families: a Deaf child or adult may use a sign language other than ASL, or may use regional signs that differ from the platform’s examples.
Important privacy warning before you record
Learning and contributing are not the same activity. Using the webcam for practice provides camera input for feedback. Choosing the recording or contribution function involves broader data-collection terms.
Under the NVIDIA data-collection terms, contributor footage may:
- be made publicly available;
- be used by NVIDIA for research, development, evaluation, marketing and promotion, including in connection with products such as Maxine;
- be used by third parties for commercial or non-commercial work related to technology for the Deaf community;
- be accompanied by demographic information that is collected or estimated for diversity and bias analysis;
- be retained while it supports research, development, marketing or promotion.
The terms also say deletion requests may affect future distributions but cannot remove footage from datasets that have already been distributed or from physical promotional materials. Contributors must retain a unique ID for future data-access or deletion requests, and contributors must be at least 18 years old.
Do not submit a recording unless you understand that it may be publicly distributed and reused. This is not the same as a private tutoring session.

Troubleshooting webcam feedback
A failed attempt does not necessarily mean that your sign was linguistically wrong. Camera conditions can affect computer-vision feedback. Try the following:
- Grant the browser camera permission.
- Select the correct camera if multiple cameras are available.
- Use front lighting rather than strong backlighting.
- Keep your full signing area visible.
- Move away from a cluttered background.
- Check that your hands are not leaving the frame.
- Retry with slower, clearer movement.
- Ask a qualified teacher or Deaf signer to resolve disagreements between the AI and your own understanding.
The platform’s interface includes camera-selection and recording-review steps, including checks for lighting and whether the complete sign is visible.
Who should use NVIDIA Signs?
Signs is a reasonable starting point for:
- hearing parents and relatives of Deaf children who want to learn foundational ASL;
- beginners who want visual practice with individual signs;
- educators exploring webcam-based accessibility tools;
- developers and researchers interested in sign-language computer vision.
It is less suitable as a standalone solution for someone who needs conversational fluency, formal interpreting ability, advanced ASL grammar or reliable communication in medical, legal, educational or emergency situations.
It also cannot replace Deaf-led instruction, qualified teachers, community interaction or sustained conversation practice. Learning a list of isolated signs is not the same as learning ASL syntax, classifiers, discourse, turn-taking, signing space or Deaf cultural norms.
What does it cost?
NVIDIA’s launch description presented Signs as free, and the current public site does not show a subscription checkout or paid learner plan. A webcam-enabled computer should be sufficient in principle; there is no evidence that NVIDIA-specific hardware is required.

The platform’s dataset access is a separate matter. The site says dataset releases began in 2025 and invites users to apply for access. Developers interested in building accessibility applications should consult the project’s current terms rather than assume that public dataset access is unrestricted.
Verdict
NVIDIA Signs is best understood as a free beginner ASL practice tool and ASL data-collection project. Its webcam feedback and digital-human demonstrations can help learners practice individual signs, and the project’s Deaf and interpreter review process is meaningful.
However, the “over 1,000 signs” wording should not be repeated as an established description of the current course. NVIDIA announced a target dataset of 1,000 signed words and initially described 100 learner-facing signs. The current public pages do not clearly verify a 1,000-plus-sign learning catalog.
Use Signs as an introduction and practice aid, supplement it with Deaf-led or qualified instruction, and read the contribution terms carefully before recording yourself.
