The RTX 5090 is the faster, more capable card by a wide margin, while the RTX 5070 Ti is the more practical choice for most high-end gaming PCs. The 5090 is aimed at uncompromised 4K gaming, path tracing, rendering, and local AI workloads. The 5070 Ti is better suited to high-refresh 1440p and sensible 4K gaming with DLSS.

The decision is not simply about frame rates. The RTX 5090 has twice the VRAM and memory bandwidth, but it also uses substantially more power, costs far more, and may require a stronger power supply, larger case, and better cooling.

RTX 5090 vs. RTX 5070 Ti: specifications

Both GPUs use Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture and support the same broad RTX 50-series feature platform. The 5090, however, is in a completely higher performance and power class.

How much faster is the RTX 5090?

There is no single percentage that applies to every game. The gap changes with resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing, DLSS, frame generation, and whether the processor limits performance.

In Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 GPU hierarchy, the RTX 5070 Ti delivered approximately 69.8% of the RTX 5090’s performance at 1440p Ultra and 61.9% at 4K Ultra in that test suite. That works out to an RTX 5090 advantage of roughly 43% at 1440p and 61% at 4K. These figures are test-suite results, not guaranteed differences in every game.

At 1440p, the 5090 can be limited by the CPU or game engine, especially in less demanding games. A 5070 Ti may therefore provide a very similar experience on a conventional 1440p monitor.

At 4K, the 5090’s extra shader resources, memory bandwidth, and VRAM become more useful. The advantage is clearest when using maximum settings, demanding ray tracing, path tracing, heavy texture packs, or a high-refresh 4K display. See Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy for the methodology behind its comparison.

4K gaming, ray tracing, and path tracing

The RTX 5090 is the better 4K GPU, particularly if “4K” means maximum settings with demanding ray-traced lighting. It has 170 ray-tracing cores and 318 RT TFLOPS, compared with 70 RT cores and 133 RT TFLOPS for the RTX 5070 Ti.

Ray tracing adds effects such as realistic reflections, shadows, and global illumination. Path tracing is a substantially heavier form of ray-traced rendering. The 5090’s additional hardware gives it more headroom for path-traced games at 4K.

The RTX 5070 Ti can absolutely play many games at 4K, especially with sensible settings and DLSS. It is more accurate to describe it as a powerful 1440p card and a capable 4K card—not as a guaranteed native-4K, maximum-ray-tracing solution for every demanding title.

DLSS and Multi Frame Generation

Both cards support Nvidia’s current Blackwell-era feature set, including DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Reflex 2, and RTX neural-rendering features. Nvidia’s current product pages use the broader DLSS 4.5 terminology, while earlier launch coverage referred to DLSS 4.

Feature availability depends on drivers, games, and applications. Multi Frame Generation also does not make generated frames equivalent to native-rendered frames. Perceived smoothness, latency, and image quality depend on the game’s base frame rate, upscaling mode, implementation, and settings.

VRAM: 32GB versus 16GB

The RTX 5090’s 32GB of GDDR7 is one of its most important advantages. The RTX 5070 Ti’s 16GB remains adequate for most current 1440p gaming and many 4K workloads, but it leaves less margin for unusually demanding software.

The extra capacity matters most for:

  • 4K or 8K textures and large texture packs;
  • heavily modded games;
  • ray tracing and path tracing;
  • large 3D scenes and complex effects;
  • high-resolution video projects;
  • local generative-AI models; and
  • buyers who want to keep a GPU through several upgrade cycles.

VRAM can be a hard limit in AI and professional applications. A model or scene that fits in 32GB may need reduced precision, system-memory offloading, or may fail to load on a 16GB card. That does not mean every current game requires more than 16GB; actual usage depends on resolution, textures, engine behavior, and asset management.

Power, cooling, and system compatibility

The power difference is decisive for many PC builds. The RTX 5090 is rated at 575W total graphics power, and Nvidia recommends a 1,000W system power supply. The RTX 5070 Ti is rated at 300W, with a 750W recommended system power supply.

The recommended figures describe the whole system, not just the GPU. Actual requirements vary with the processor, drives, fans, overclocking, and PSU quality. Nevertheless, the 5090 produces substantially more heat and requires more careful planning.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5080
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

Before buying an RTX 5090, check:

  • that the PSU is a reputable 1,000W-class ATX 3.x model;
  • that it has a native PCIe Gen 5 high-power GPU cable rated for the card, or the required adapter and separate cables;
  • that the connector is fully seated and has sufficient bend clearance;
  • that the case has strong intake and exhaust airflow;
  • that the CPU cooler and case can handle the additional heat; and
  • that the exact graphics card fits around front fans, radiators, drive cages, and vertical mounts.

The 5070 Ti is easier to integrate into a typical mid-range or high-end gaming system and generally permits a less expensive PSU and cooling setup.

Size and card-model differences

Nvidia lists the RTX 5090 Founders Edition at 304mm long, 137mm wide, and two slots. The RTX 5070 Ti has no single standard Founders Edition design; its dimensions vary by board partner.

That creates an important buying trap. A compact 5090 Founders Edition may be narrower than a particular triple-slot 5070 Ti, while a factory-overclocked 5090 may be much larger. Compare the exact model’s length, height, thickness, power connector position, and manufacturer clearance guidance with your case specifications.

Creator, rendering, and AI workloads

The RTX 5090 is the stronger professional and enthusiast card because it combines more compute resources with twice the VRAM and memory bandwidth. Nvidia’s specifications also list three ninth-generation NVENC encoders and two sixth-generation NVDEC decoders for the RTX 5090, compared with one of each on the RTX 5070 Ti.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That can matter for GPU rendering, local AI image generation, large-language-model experimentation, high-resolution video work, and multi-stream encoding. A workload that scales across CUDA or Tensor resources can benefit substantially from the 5090, while a workload that exceeds 16GB may be possible on the 5090 but impractical on the 5070 Ti.

The 5090 is not automatically twice as fast in every creative application. Results depend on software support, workload size, memory requirements, and how well the application scales across the available hardware.

The 5070 Ti remains a sensible choice for many Adobe, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, and AI workloads when 16GB is sufficient. Its lower price, power use, and heat output can matter more than maximum throughput for occasional or moderately sized projects.

US pricing and value

The launch MSRPs were $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti—a $1,250 difference, with the 5090’s MSRP approximately 2.7 times higher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

US price snapshot: August 16, 2026. Retail pricing is volatile and varies by board partner, stock, promotions, and seller. Reported listings were approximately $4,299–$4,399 for RTX 5090 cards and $1,029.99–$1,099 for RTX 5070 Ti cards. These are dated market observations, not guaranteed prices.

At or near MSRP, the 5070 Ti is the much stronger value for mainstream high-end gaming. At heavily inflated prices, its value advantage can shrink. The RTX 5090 is not a value-oriented product; its justification is maximum performance, 32GB of memory, and the ability to handle workloads that make the 5070 Ti’s 16GB or compute capacity restrictive.

Also account for platform cost. A 5090 purchase may require a new PSU, a larger case, improved airflow, a faster CPU for high-refresh 1440p gaming, or a 4K high-refresh monitor. Current pricing examples should be checked against Tom’s Hardware’s GPU buying coverage and PC Gamer’s price watch rather than treated as fixed prices.

Which GPU should you buy?

Choose the RTX 5090 if:

  • You want the fastest consumer GeForce GPU.
  • You play demanding games at 4K with maximum ray tracing or path tracing.
  • You have, or plan to buy, a high-refresh 4K display.
  • You use large texture packs, heavy mods, or unusually demanding future workloads.
  • You render large 3D scenes or run local AI workloads that are constrained by 16GB.
  • You need the additional encoding and decoding capacity.
  • You are prepared for a quality 1,000W-class PSU, suitable case, and higher electricity use.

Choose the RTX 5070 Ti if:

  • You mainly play at 1440p.
  • You want strong 4K gaming with DLSS and adjusted settings.
  • You care more about value and practicality than absolute performance.
  • You do not want a 575W graphics card.
  • Your creative and AI projects fit comfortably within 16GB.
  • You are building in a conventional mid- or high-end case.
  • The RTX 5090 is selling for several times its MSRP.

Consider waiting or buying another GPU if:

  • The exact card is priced far above its normal performance tier.
  • You use a 1080p monitor and do not plan to upgrade.
  • Your CPU would bottleneck either card at your target resolution.
  • Your current GPU already meets your frame-rate target.
  • You primarily want features available on both Blackwell cards and do not need 32GB of VRAM.
  • A discounted previous-generation high-end GPU or a less expensive RTX 50-series model better matches your display and workload.

The verdict

The RTX 5090 is the clear performance winner: it has substantially more compute hardware, twice the VRAM and bandwidth, stronger ray-tracing capacity, and more capability for demanding 4K, rendering, and AI workloads. It is also dramatically more expensive, hotter, and harder to fit into a system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTX 5070 Ti is the better practical choice for most high-end gamers. It is powerful for 1440p, capable at 4K with appropriate settings and DLSS, and far easier to power and cool. Choose the RTX 5090 only when its extra performance or 32GB memory directly matches your resolution, workload, or long-term requirements.
