The November 2024 rumor was substantially accurate. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 Ti ultimately launched with 8,960 CUDA cores and 300W of total board power. The original report called the figure “300W TDP,” but total graphics power (TGP) or total board power (TBP) is the more precise description.

What began as an unconfirmed leak is now a useful case study in how Nvidia positioned the RTX 5070 Ti: a 16GB Blackwell card based on the same GB203 die family as the RTX 5080, but with fewer active resources, a lower power target and a lower launch price.

What the original RTX 5070 Ti rumor claimed

On November 21, 2024, Tom’s Hardware reported claims attributed to GPU leaker Kopite7kimi and relayed through VideoCardz. The rumored RTX 5070 Ti was expected to feature:

  • 8,960 CUDA cores
  • An approximately 300W power target
  • A GB203 GPU, the same broad die family expected for the RTX 5080
  • Possibly 16GB of VRAM on a 256-bit memory interface
  • A board design related to the RTX 5080

At the time, none of those details represented a confirmed retail specification. The report did not establish the final clock speeds, memory speed, connector arrangement, card dimensions, gaming performance or exact launch date. It also was not clear whether the reported 300W referred to TDP, TBP or TGP.

Why the GB203 connection mattered

The important technical suggestion in the leak was not just the CUDA-core count. It was the possibility that the RTX 5070 Ti would use the same GB203 silicon family as the RTX 5080.

Using a shared die family can simplify product segmentation and board development. Nvidia can sell different performance tiers by changing the number of active streaming multiprocessors, clocks, memory configuration and power limits. The RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 can therefore be related at the silicon level without being interchangeable GPUs.

The RTX 5080 has more CUDA cores and a higher power budget. “GB203-based” is accurate; saying that the two cards use “the same GPU” without qualification would imply a level of hardware equivalence that does not exist.

RTX 5070 Ti versus RTX 5080

Specification RTX 5070 Ti RTX 5080
Architecture Blackwell Blackwell
GPU die family GB203 GB203
CUDA cores 8,960 10,752
Memory 16GB GDDR7 16GB GDDR7
Memory interface 256-bit 256-bit
Board-power class 300W Higher; verify the exact model specification
Launch MSRP $749 $999

The RTX 5080 has 1,792 more CUDA cores, or 20% more than the RTX 5070 Ti. That does not translate into a guaranteed 20% gaming advantage. Architecture, clocks, cache, drivers, ray-tracing workloads, game engines and DLSS behavior all influence performance.

The original rumor report referred to a 400W figure for the RTX 5080, but that was itself pre-launch reporting. It should not be presented as the final production specification without a separate primary source.

RTX 5070 Ti versus RTX 4070 Ti and 4070 Ti Super

The RTX 5070 Ti has more shader cores than both relevant previous-generation cards:

GPU CUDA cores
RTX 4070 Ti 7,680
RTX 4070 Ti Super 8,448
RTX 5070 Ti 8,960

That gives the RTX 5070 Ti approximately 16.7% more CUDA cores than the RTX 4070 Ti and approximately 6.1% more than the RTX 4070 Ti Super. These are shader-count comparisons, not measured frame-rate claims.

The newer card also brings GDDR7, Blackwell’s ray-tracing and Tensor hardware, and DLSS 4 support. However, a buyer should compare actual game benchmarks and current prices rather than assuming that the CUDA-core difference alone determines the upgrade’s value.

What 300W means for a system builder

For the final card, 300W is best understood as a total board-power specification. It does not mean the GPU draws exactly 300W in every game, nor does it equal the system’s total wall consumption.

  • TDP is commonly used as a thermal-design metric.
  • TGP or TBP more directly describes the graphics card’s power target.
  • Factory-overclocked partner cards may use higher power limits or different board-power behavior.
  • Power draw varies with workload, clocks, temperature and power-management settings.

Use Nvidia’s system recommendation as the baseline, then account for the CPU, drives, fans, PSU age and future upgrades. A quality 750W-class PSU may be a sensible starting point for many systems, but no single wattage is universally mandatory. Compact builds should also check card thickness, length, airflow and connector clearance.

Where the card uses a modern high-power connector, connect it carefully and ensure it is fully seated. Use only cables designed for the specific PSU; do not mix modular cables from different manufacturers or PSU families.

Launch price versus real-world price

The RTX 5070 Ti launched at a $749 US starting price. That price made the card a potentially attractive middle ground between the $549 RTX 5070 and $999 RTX 5080.

MSRP is not the same as the price buyers actually face. A PC Gamer price-watch page dated August 14, 2026, listed an RTX 5070 Ti at $1,029.99—$280.99 above the launch MSRP, or roughly 37.5% higher. That is a dated market snapshot rather than a universal price, but it shows why the original value proposition cannot be evaluated from MSRP alone.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

At or near $749, the RTX 5070 Ti is worth serious consideration. Around $850 to $900, compare it with discounted alternatives and RTX 5080 availability. At roughly $1,000 or more, the RTX 5080 becomes a much more important comparison unless the specific RTX 5070 Ti model’s 16GB capacity, size, software support or availability solves a particular need.

Who should consider the RTX 5070 Ti?

  • Gamers seeking a high-end 1440p or entry-level 4K card with 16GB of VRAM.
  • Users who want Nvidia’s ray tracing, DLSS 4 and CUDA software ecosystem.
  • Creators using Nvidia-optimized applications, rendering tools or video workflows.
  • Buyers who find the card close to its $749 launch price.

Who should avoid it?

  • Compact-system builders with limited cooling or clearance.
  • Buyers who need the lowest possible power consumption.
  • Users who require more than 16GB of VRAM for particularly demanding workloads.
  • Anyone paying close to RTX 5080 money for a 5070 Ti.
  • Buyers expecting Multi Frame Generation output to provide the same responsiveness or image quality as traditionally rendered frames.

Sixteen gigabytes is useful capacity, but it is not a guarantee against future VRAM limits. Likewise, DLSS 4 can improve supported games, but its benefits depend on game support and should not be treated as a universal replacement for native rendering performance.

Alternatives worth checking

GeForce RTX 5070

The RTX 5070 launched at $549 with 6,144 CUDA cores, 12GB of GDDR7 and a 192-bit memory interface. It costs less and has a lower power target, but the smaller VRAM capacity and narrower bus make the RTX 5070 Ti the stronger choice when the price gap is modest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GeForce RTX 5080

The RTX 5080 has more active resources and occupies a higher performance tier, but it also costs more and consumes more power. It becomes especially relevant when RTX 5070 Ti cards are selling near $1,000.

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super

A discounted RTX 4070 Ti Super can still make sense for buyers who do not need Blackwell-specific features. Condition, warranty and used-market pricing matter if purchasing an older card.

AMD Radeon cards

Radeon alternatives may offer strong native-raster value or different VRAM configurations, but the right comparison depends on current pricing and the buyer’s priorities. Ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, CUDA compatibility, creator software and actual game performance should all be included rather than relying on one specification.

Verdict

The RTX 5070 Ti rumor was unusually accurate. The leaked 8,960 CUDA-core count became an official specification, the rumored 300W power class became a 300W total board-power rating, and the GB203 and 16GB/256-bit memory details also broadly matched the final product.

The important correction is terminology: this is not best described simply as a “300W TDP” card. It is a 300W graphics card by total board-power specification. The important buying correction is price: at its $749 launch MSRP, the RTX 5070 Ti had a clear position; at substantially higher street prices, the RTX 5080 and competing cards can change the calculation.
