Verdict: The original GeForce RTX 4070 remains an efficient, capable 1440p graphics card, but the RTX 4070 Super changed its value proposition. At the original $599 launch price, the RTX 4070 is difficult to recommend; it makes sense mainly as a clearance or used-market purchase at a meaningful discount. It is less convincing for uncompromised 4K gaming because its 12GB of VRAM can become a limitation.

This review covers the original RTX 4070 launched on April 12, 2023—not the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070 Ti Super, or later RTX 4070 models fitted with GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X. The buying advice is updated for the Super era, with a 2026 comparison against newer alternatives.

The RTX 4070 uses Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture and the AD104 GPU. Its core configuration, 12GB memory capacity, and 192-bit bus place it below the RTX 4070 Super in rendering resources, while retaining the same broad feature generation. Nvidia’s launch announcement documents the card’s original specifications and creator features.

Exact clock speeds, cooler dimensions, connector arrangements, noise levels, and even memory type can vary between manufacturers. Check the specific model before buying. “OC” on a product name indicates a factory-overclocked standard RTX 4070; it does not make the card an RTX 4070 Super.

Gaming performance: 1440p is the sweet spot

The RTX 4070 is best suited to high-refresh 1440p gaming. In conventional rasterized games, it can generally handle high settings comfortably, although the exact frame rate depends on the game, CPU, driver, and test settings. Esports games may become CPU-limited at very high frame rates, so upgrading the graphics card alone will not guarantee a 240Hz experience.

For modern AAA games, high rather than maximum settings are often the sensible choice. Texture quality is particularly important because it consumes VRAM, while a few expensive lighting, shadow, or volumetric settings can be reduced with relatively small visual compromises.

Nvidia claimed that the RTX 4070 could exceed 100 frames per second in selected games using DLSS 3. That is a game-specific, DLSS-enabled result—not a promise that every modern title will run above 100fps. Independent testing places the RTX 4070 family firmly in the strong 1440p performance class; GamersNexus testing and Tom’s Hardware testing also show why the Super model is the faster choice at the same historical price.

Ray tracing and DLSS at 1440p

Ray tracing makes the RTX 4070 more attractive than a simple rasterization ranking might suggest. Its third-generation RT cores and fourth-generation Tensor cores support hardware-accelerated ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, and Ada-generation frame generation.

DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output image. DLSS Frame Generation creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. Nvidia Reflex can help reduce latency in supported games. These features vary by title and mode, and image artifacts may appear around particles, user-interface elements, rapidly moving objects, or newly revealed scenery.

Frame generation works best when the underlying rendered frame rate is already reasonably high. A displayed 120fps with frame generation is not equivalent to 120 independently rendered frames: base frame rate, latency, frame pacing, game support, and artifacts still matter.

4K gaming: viable, but not uncompromised

The RTX 4070 can play games at 4K, but it is not a no-compromise 4K Ultra card. Use high settings and DLSS Quality or Balanced where appropriate. Heavy ray tracing and path tracing can require more aggressive compromises.

Its 12GB framebuffer and 192-bit memory interface are the main concerns at 4K. When a game exceeds available VRAM, the result may be texture problems, stuttering, or severe frame-time spikes rather than simply a predictable reduction in average FPS. Lowering texture quality before disabling every other visual feature is often the most effective response.

For a 4K 144Hz monitor, especially in new AAA games, a faster card with more memory is a better long-term match. The RTX 4070 is more naturally aligned with 1440p high refresh or 4K gaming with sensible compromises.

RTX 4070 vs RTX 4070 Super

This is the most important comparison. Nvidia launched the RTX 4070 Super on January 17, 2024, at $599—the same starting price as the original RTX 4070. It has about 22% more CUDA cores, while retaining 12GB of memory, the 192-bit bus, Ada Lovelace architecture, and DLSS 3 support.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Independent reviews generally place the RTX 4070 Super roughly 15–20% ahead of the original, with the exact gain varying by game, resolution, ray tracing settings, and test methodology. It also uses somewhat more power, but both cards remain efficient for their performance class.

Choose the RTX 4070 when… Choose the RTX 4070 Super when…
It is substantially cheaper. The price is close to the original.
You are building a quiet, low-power 1440p system. You want the strongest Ada card in this class.
You find a well-tested used or clearance model with warranty. You want more performance without increasing VRAM capacity.

At equal price, the RTX 4070 Super is the clear choice. A small discount on the original is not enough to offset the Super’s extra performance. The standard RTX 4070 needs a genuinely lower price to become compelling.

RTX 4070 vs RTX 5070

The RTX 5070 is the more relevant newer-generation comparison. Nvidia’s Blackwell card has 6,144 CUDA cores, 12GB of GDDR7 on a 192-bit interface, fifth-generation Tensor cores, fourth-generation RT cores, and support for DLSS 4 features including Multi Frame Generation. Nvidia announced a $549 MSRP and February 2025 availability in the United States.

The RTX 5070 is faster than the original RTX 4070, but the practical gap depends on the workload. Comparisons with the RTX 4070 Super have found only a modest traditional-rendering advantage in some test suites, so a newer generation label should not be treated as an automatic reason to pay a large premium. See TechRadar’s comparison for that context.

Its clearest advantage is feature support. DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation requires Blackwell hardware and supported games; the RTX 4070 supports Ada-generation single-frame generation, not Multi Frame Generation. Nvidia describes the technology’s transformer-based improvements and Multi Frame Generation in its DLSS 4 technical overview.

For a 2026 purchase, choose the RTX 5070 when it is near its announced MSRP, the RTX 4070 is expensive, or DLSS 4 matters to you. Choose a discounted RTX 4070 when it is dramatically cheaper and your priority is conventional 1440p rendering. The research available for this article does not establish a reliable, region-specific August 2026 street price, so historical MSRP figures should not be mistaken for current offers.

AMD alternatives

Radeon cards deserve consideration, particularly for buyers prioritizing rasterized performance and memory capacity. The RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 GRE, and discounted RX 7900 XT were important competitors around the RTX 4070’s 2024-era market. Newer RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT models are relevant in 2026.

Prioritize Nvidia if you need… Prioritize AMD if you value…
Strong ray tracing and DLSS. Rasterized performance per dollar.
CUDA or OptiX compatibility. More than 12GB of VRAM at a similar price.
NVENC, AV1 workflows, or Nvidia Studio support. A less expensive conventional gaming solution.

There is no universal winner. Compare matched reviews and local prices for rasterization, ray tracing, upscaling quality, frame generation, VRAM, streaming, and creator applications. Older RTX 4070 benchmarks should not be used alone to make a 2026 RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT purchase decision.

Power, cooling, and system requirements

Efficiency is the RTX 4070’s strongest enduring advantage. Nvidia positioned it as offering RTX 3080-class rasterized performance at substantially lower power; that is a launch comparison from Nvidia, not a universal result across every workload.

  • Target a quality 650W-class power supply for a stock RTX 4070 system, while following the exact manufacturer recommendation.
  • Check the card’s length, height, and slot thickness; quiet partner cards can be substantially larger.
  • Verify whether the model uses a native connector or an included adapter.
  • Provide adequate case airflow, especially in compact systems.
  • Compact models may improve compatibility while sacrificing some thermal headroom.

Creator and productivity performance

The RTX 4070 is more compelling for creators who benefit from Nvidia’s ecosystem. CUDA and OptiX can accelerate supported applications such as Blender, while NVENC and AV1 encoding are useful for compatible streaming and recording workflows. Nvidia Studio drivers and application support can also be valuable in supported software.

Results depend heavily on the application version and workload. A gaming benchmark does not predict performance in Blender, Adobe applications, DaVinci Resolve, or AI software. Some workloads benefit strongly from CUDA or OptiX; others do not. The 12GB capacity may also be insufficient for large local AI models, complex 3D scenes, or high-resolution video projects.

Who should buy the RTX 4070?

  • 1440p gamer: Yes, if the price is clearly below the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 5070.
  • 4K gamer: Only if you accept DLSS and reduced settings; consider more VRAM for long-term ownership.
  • Ray-tracing enthusiast: Nvidia remains attractive, but a newer card may offer better longevity if priced reasonably.
  • Competitive player: It is capable, although the CPU and monitor refresh rate may matter more.
  • Streamer: AV1-capable NVENC is a meaningful advantage when supported by the platform and software.
  • Video editor or 3D artist: Check application-specific CUDA, OptiX, VRAM, and codec requirements.
  • AI user: Treat 12GB as a practical capacity limit, not merely a specification.

Buying a used RTX 4070

A used RTX 4070 can be sensible when the discount is large and the seller offers protection. Check warranty transferability, proof of purchase, return rights, physical damage, fan-bearing noise, thermal throttling, power-connector condition, and whether the card was modified, repasted, or used for mining. Test for crashes and visual artifacts under load before accepting the purchase.

Final verdict

The RTX 4070 was a strong efficiency-focused 1440p GPU when it launched at $599 in April 2023. The RTX 4070 Super, launched at the same price in January 2024, made the original model poor value at MSRP by delivering roughly 15–20% more performance with the same 12GB memory capacity.

In 2026, the RTX 4070 is a value buy only when clearance or used pricing creates a substantial gap below the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 5070. Buy it for efficient 1440p gaming, DLSS, ray tracing, CUDA, or NVENC—not for uncompromised 4K longevity. If the price is close to a newer card, choose the newer card instead.
