NVIDIA’s GeForce Game Ready Driver 566.36 did not instantly uninstall GeForce Experience from every PC. Instead, the WHQL driver, released on December 5, 2024, made the new NVIDIA App an optional bundled companion and marked the practical beginning of GeForce Experience’s replacement.
The driver itself remains a display-driver update. NVIDIA App is separate software that brings together driver updates, game optimization, recording, overlays, performance monitoring, filters, and selected graphics settings. The NVIDIA Control Panel was not completely eliminated at this stage, although NVIDIA had begun moving some of its functionality into the new app.
What NVIDIA driver 566.36 changed
NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 566.36 is a WHQL-certified driver released on December 5, 2024. NVIDIA listed support for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, with an installer package of approximately 732.91 MB. The official download page also offered NVIDIA App as an additional installation option.

That wording is important. 566.36 did not make NVIDIA App a mandatory part of the graphics-driver installation, and installing the driver did not necessarily remove an existing GeForce Experience installation.

Which games did 566.36 target?
NVIDIA described the driver as Game Ready for:
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
- Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
- Marvel Rivals
It also included additional DLSS-related support for Path of Exile 2, Forza Motorsport, and Delta Force. NVIDIA listed a fix for a crash involving Forza Horizon 5 and God of War: Ragnarök that could occur after updating to an R565-series driver.
“Game Ready” should not be read as a promise of higher frame rates in every game. It indicates that NVIDIA tuned and validated the release for particular games and technologies.

NVIDIA officially released NVIDIA App on November 12, 2024, before driver 566.36 arrived. The company positioned it as a unified GPU control center intended to bring together:
- GeForce Experience
- NVIDIA RTX Experience
- Parts of the NVIDIA Control Panel
The December driver was therefore a packaging milestone, not the app’s original launch. New installations could add NVIDIA App alongside the driver, while existing GeForce Experience installations could remain on a user’s system. Some users also had to download NVIDIA App separately, particularly because certain older GeForce Experience versions could not automatically update themselves.
NVIDIA’s later migration guidance urged remaining GeForce Experience users to move to NVIDIA App because critical GeForce Experience web servers were scheduled for shutdown. That later warning should not be confused with what happened specifically when 566.36 launched.

What NVIDIA App brought to the transition
NVIDIA App was not intended to be a screen-for-screen copy of GeForce Experience. NVIDIA said it incorporated many of GeForce Experience’s main features while removing less-used functions and adding newer RTX controls.
At launch and during the preceding beta period, NVIDIA highlighted:
- Driver downloads and update notifications
- Game scanning and Optimal Playable Settings
- A redesigned overlay
- ShadowPlay recording and Instant Replay
- A recording and screenshot gallery
- Customizable performance statistics
- NVIDIA Freestyle filters
- RTX HDR and RTX Video-related controls
- Game and application graphics settings
- G-SYNC controls in the app
- One-click automatic GPU tuning
- Driver rollback in later app versions
- Access to other NVIDIA applications
NVIDIA claimed that NVIDIA App installed in half the time and had a user interface 50% more responsive than GeForce Experience. Those are NVIDIA’s own comparative claims, not independent measurements.
AV1 recording was also highlighted, but it depended on compatible hardware. NVIDIA’s earlier announcement specifically associated AV1 encoding with GeForce RTX 40-series cards using eighth-generation NVENC. AI filters and other RTX-specific functions likewise require supported RTX hardware.

Did NVIDIA App replace NVIDIA Control Panel?
Not completely in December 2024. NVIDIA was moving toward a unified application, and NVIDIA App exposed several graphics, display, game-profile, and G-SYNC controls. However, it was inaccurate to say that the traditional NVIDIA Control Panel had already disappeared when 566.36 was released.
Later NVIDIA updates incorporated more Control Panel functionality and added newer features such as additional DLSS controls and other RTX capabilities. Those later additions should not be retroactively described as features delivered by driver 566.36.

Is an NVIDIA account required?
NVIDIA described account login as optional for ordinary NVIDIA App use. Basic driver installation and normal local functions were not presented as requiring an NVIDIA account.

An account may still be relevant for rewards, promotional bundles, or connected NVIDIA services. These are separate from installing the display driver. Users should also distinguish the app’s login requirement from permissions for overlays, recording, desktop capture, and other local functions.
How to install driver 566.36
- Open NVIDIA’s official 566.36 driver page.
- Confirm that the selected GPU and operating system are correct.
- Download the Game Ready Driver package.
- Run the installer and review the optional NVIDIA App component.
- Choose whether to install NVIDIA App.
- Select the available driver-installation mode that suits your needs.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- If you installed NVIDIA App, open it afterward and confirm the installed driver version.
Exact installer screen labels can vary by package and release. The key point confirmed by NVIDIA’s 566.36 page is that NVIDIA App was offered as an optional additional installation.
Can you install only the driver?
Yes, users who want the display driver without NVIDIA App should review the installer’s component choices and decline the app when that option is shown. Downloading the package directly from NVIDIA’s manual driver-search system is preferable to relying on an existing companion app.
“Driver only” does not mean that no NVIDIA software components are installed. The display driver package can include supporting components needed for GPU operation and Windows integration.
Should you install NVIDIA App?
Install it if you want:
- One interface for drivers, game settings, recording, overlays, and monitoring.
- Newer NVIDIA App-focused features and future updates.
- A replacement for GeForce Experience before its dependent services are retired.
- RTX features such as RTX HDR, AI filters, or compatible capture options.
- In-app driver management and, in later versions, rollback support.
Skip or defer it if you:
- Want the smallest possible software footprint.
- Already update drivers manually and use OBS Studio or another capture application.
- Depend on a legacy feature that was not yet migrated or changed location.
- Prefer not to add background notifications or promotional features.
- Use a production workstation that does not need gaming overlays or automatic tuning.
There is no verified universal frame-rate penalty or fixed memory cost that can be assigned to NVIDIA App. Performance and background-activity concerns are system-specific and should be evaluated on the user’s own PC.

NVIDIA supports Game Ready and Studio drivers for compatible notebook GPUs, but laptop manufacturers may provide drivers certified for a particular model. This matters especially for systems with hybrid graphics, Advanced Optimus, special display modes, or manufacturer power-management utilities.

Before replacing an OEM driver, check the laptop maker’s support page and keep the manufacturer’s driver available in case the generic NVIDIA package causes display, switching, power, or sleep problems.
Game Ready or Studio Driver?
Driver 566.36 in the headline is the Game Ready release. NVIDIA also published a separate Studio 566.36 package on December 10, 2024.

- Game Ready: prioritizes day-one game support and gaming-focused fixes.
- Studio: prioritizes validation for creative applications and creator workflows.
Neither is universally better. Choose based on whether gaming compatibility or creative-application stability is the priority.
A safer migration checklist
Before moving from GeForce Experience to NVIDIA App, especially on a PC used for recording or competitive gaming:
- Record important custom game settings and profiles.
- Note your overlay hotkeys.
- Check the ShadowPlay recording and screenshot folders.
- Recheck microphone, desktop-capture, and privacy settings.
- Test the overlay in one game before relying on it for an important session.
- Keep a copy of the preferred driver installer if rollback becomes necessary.
- Remove duplicate legacy software only after confirming that the new setup works.
Common problems and what they mean
- The overlay does not open: verify the overlay is enabled, check its hotkey, and test it in a supported game.
- Recording is unavailable: desktop-capture restrictions, protected content, permissions, or unsupported hardware may be responsible.
- AV1 is missing: the GPU may not provide the required encoding hardware.
- Filters do not appear: the game, driver, GPU, or app version may not support the selected filter.
- HDR screenshots have incorrect colors: update the app and driver, then check HDR and capture settings.
- A game is not detected: rescan the library or check whether the correct game profile is being used.
- The app is missing after installation: the optional component may have been declined or the driver may have been installed separately.
- GeForce Experience and NVIDIA App show conflicting settings: avoid changing the same setting in both applications and complete the migration only after testing the new app.
NVIDIA’s release notes document fixes over time for issues including game-filter failures, HDR screenshot problems, driver-download failures, and application stability. A problem reported by one release does not mean every user experienced it.
The timeline in context
- February 2024: NVIDIA App beta begins the broader unification effort.
- June 2024: the beta adds features including AV1 recording and automatic GPU tuning.
- November 12, 2024: NVIDIA App officially launches.
- December 5, 2024: Game Ready Driver 566.36 offers NVIDIA App as an optional bundled component.
- Later releases: NVIDIA continues moving Control Panel functions into the app and adds newer graphics and RTX features.
- August 2026: NVIDIA’s migration messaging tells remaining GeForce Experience users to upgrade because critical web-server shutdown was planned.
The most accurate summary is that 566.36 began the practical transition: NVIDIA App became the new bundled companion, while GeForce Experience remained installed on some systems and the Control Panel transition continued separately.
