novideo_sRGB is a free, open-source Windows utility for NVIDIA GPUs that can clamp a wide-gamut monitor to sRGB before the signal reaches the display. It is useful when ordinary SDR content looks excessively saturated and the monitor’s built-in sRGB mode is missing, inaccurate, or locks important controls.

It is not a universal monitor-calibration system. The utility relies on an undocumented NVIDIA API, is primarily intended for SDR, and requires careful handling of HDR, ICC profiles, dithering, and Windows color management.

What problem does novideo_sRGB solve?

Many modern monitors cover a wider color gamut than the sRGB standard. Their native gamut may be close to Display P3, Adobe RGB, or another wide-gamut space. That is valuable for appropriately managed photos, video, and games, but it can make ordinary SDR content look wrong when an application assumes an sRGB display.

In an unmanaged application, sRGB RGB values may be sent to a wider-gamut panel without the conversion required for the intended appearance. Reds and greens can look neon-like, skin tones can appear unnatural, and general desktop content can seem oversaturated.

That does not mean every game, video player, or Windows application is unmanaged. The result depends on the application and presentation path. novideo_sRGB is most useful where the software does not correctly account for the monitor’s wider gamut.

The project describes the utility as using an undocumented NVIDIA API to apply a color-space conversion at the GPU-output stage. Its basic purpose is gamut control: converting output intended for sRGB so it fits an sRGB target on a wider-gamut monitor.

What novideo_sRGB actually changes

The utility asks the NVIDIA driver to transform color data before it is sent to the display. It is therefore broader than application-only color management, but it should not be described as a monitor’s internal hardware LUT or a professional 3D-LUT calibration system.

novideo_sRGB can use chromaticity information from the monitor’s EDID or from an ICC profile. The project also provides optional gamma and grayscale calibration functions when suitable ICC data is supplied. The basic Clamped setting, however, is mainly a gamut clamp rather than complete display calibration.

Its supported target spaces include sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB, and BT.2020. The project README says NVIDIA GPUs from the Fermi generation onward are supported, but that is a project-level claim rather than a guarantee that every modern driver, adapter, laptop, or display path will work.

Should you use it?

Situation Best starting point
Standard-gamut sRGB monitor Do not use novideo_sRGB.
Wide-gamut monitor with an accurate, adjustable sRGB preset Try the monitor’s sRGB mode first.
Wide-gamut monitor with a poor or locked sRGB preset Consider novideo_sRGB.
NVIDIA desktop GPU used mainly for SDR gaming and desktop work Strong use case, subject to testing.
Windows 11 with supported Auto Color Management Compare Windows color management before adding another correction layer.
HDR gaming or HDR video Disable the sRGB clamp for HDR.
Measured display and a colorimeter Use ICC data carefully and verify the result by measurement.
Professional photo or video work Use a measured, color-managed workflow rather than relying only on a blanket clamp.
AMD or Intel output path novideo_sRGB is not the appropriate utility.

novideo_sRGB versus a monitor’s sRGB mode

A monitor’s built-in sRGB preset is normally the simplest first option. It works at the display level and does not depend on an undocumented GPU interface. However, some monitors lock brightness, RGB controls, local-dimming behavior, overdrive, or other settings in that mode. Factory implementation can also be inaccurate.

novideo_sRGB lets you keep the monitor in a native or custom mode while limiting SDR output to the selected color space. That can preserve brightness and controls unavailable in the monitor’s sRGB preset. In exchange, it depends on the NVIDIA-controlled display path, can be disrupted by driver or display changes, and must be handled separately from HDR.

Do not normally stack the monitor’s sRGB emulation and novideo_sRGB. Using both can produce an overly restricted, washed-out, or otherwise incorrect result.

Windows 11 Auto Color Management is another option

Current Windows 11 systems may already provide a better answer for some users. NVIDIA’s documentation on Windows 11 display color describes Auto Color Management as using display EDID chromaticity values or a registered ICC profile to manage supported applications. NVIDIA identifies wide-gamut displays as a use case and says the feature requires a Turing-generation or newer GPU.

Auto Color Management does not make every older game or application behave identically, and its availability depends on the Windows version, hardware, and display configuration. If it is available, compare its result with novideo_sRGB rather than enabling both blindly. Two color-management layers can cause undersaturation, tinting, or other inconsistencies.

Requirements and compatibility

  • A Windows system with an NVIDIA GPU and a compatible NVIDIA-controlled output path.
  • A wide-gamut display, such as a P3- or Adobe RGB-capable monitor, if the goal is to correct oversaturation.
  • A stable SDR monitor mode. Native or custom mode is usually the sensible starting point.
  • Extra caution with laptop panels, docks, KVMs, adapters, and displays connected through integrated graphics. These paths may not expose the output to the NVIDIA driver in the way the utility requires.
  • Separate handling for SDR and HDR.

In multi-monitor setups, select the intended display carefully. Different monitors may report different chromaticities and may require different settings.

Safe first-time setup

  1. Download the official release. Use the novideo_sRGB GitHub repository. The README instructs users to extract release.zip somewhere under the user directory and run novideo_srgb.exe.
  2. Set the monitor to a stable SDR mode. Use native or custom mode if the software is replacing the monitor’s sRGB emulation.
  3. Select the correct monitor. Confirm it using its model, resolution, position, or a temporary test change.
  4. Start with EDID data. The utility can use the monitor’s reported chromaticities. This is the least complicated setup, but it depends on the EDID being credible.
  5. Enable Clamped. This is the main control for enabling or disabling the color-space clamp.
  6. Leave Advanced settings alone initially. Use them for ICC-profile input and dithering only after the basic clamp is understood.
  7. Configure reapplication if needed. The project provides a Run at startup option and supports starting minimized with -minimize. Its background operation and Reapply control can help after display or driver changes.
  8. Test the result. Compare clamped and unclamped output using sRGB photographs, skin tones, saturated color patches, and grayscale gradients.

The expected change is reduced saturation, not simply a darker or dimmer picture. If the image becomes dull, tinted, or visibly inconsistent, investigate overlapping color-management layers before changing multiple settings.

EDID and ICC profiles

When EDID is enough

EDID is display-identification data reported to the GPU. It can contain the monitor’s RGB primary chromaticities and other characteristics. EDID is a reasonable starting point when no measured profile is available and the monitor reports plausible native-gamut values.

EDID can be wrong or too generic. A monitor may report sRGB primaries despite having a wide-gamut panel, or report values that do not match the selected monitor mode. The project README also says its conversion does not use the reported white point and assumes the display is calibrated to D65.

When to use an ICC profile

A measured ICC profile is preferable when the EDID is inaccurate or when the monitor’s actual primaries, tone response, and operating conditions matter. The profile must match the physical monitor, preset, brightness, white point, and configuration being used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

By default, novideo_sRGB can use the ICC profile’s primary coordinates instead of EDID values. If Calibrate gamma to is enabled, it can apply more of the profile’s calibration information.

Do not automatically load the same ICC profile in Windows or another application when novideo_sRGB is already using it to create the GPU transform. That can apply correction twice. The project specifically warns against this arrangement. A separate profiling workflow may be appropriate after active calibration, but it must be designed so the profile is not redundantly applied.

HDR: keep it separate from the sRGB clamp

The sRGB clamp is intended for SDR. When Windows HDR is enabled for a monitor, disable the clamp for that display. Applying an SDR conversion to HDR output can produce incorrect colors.

The project documents driver-sensitive HDR behavior. Beginning with NVIDIA driver version 531.79, it reported that the driver rejected attempts to set a color-space conversion while HDR was enabled, returning error -104 (NVAPI_NOT_SUPPORTED). It also warns that applications using NVAPI HDR while Windows HDR is off can produce incorrect colors while the clamp remains active.

Driver behavior can change, so do not assume every current NVIDIA release handles transitions identically. After switching between HDR and SDR, verify that the clamp has the expected state and use Reapply if necessary.

How to verify the result

Use a controlled before-and-after comparison:

  • View known sRGB images and photographs with familiar skin tones.
  • Check saturated red and green patches for reduced neon-like intensity.
  • Inspect grayscale gradients for banding or abrupt steps.
  • Confirm that brightness has not changed merely because the gamut changed.
  • Test the applications you actually use; behavior can differ between games, browsers, video players, and desktop elements.

A visual check can show whether oversaturation is reduced, but it cannot prove calibration accuracy. A colorimeter or spectrophotometer is needed to assess white point, gamma, grayscale, gamut coverage, and color error. Even a measured profile does not automatically make every unmanaged application color-managed.

Troubleshooting

The image is still oversaturated

Confirm that Clamped is enabled, the correct monitor is selected, and the display is not using a competing wide-gamut or HDR mode. Check whether the application itself changes color behavior. If the EDID reports incorrect primaries, use a suitable ICC profile instead.

The clamp checkbox is unavailable

The project notes that a locked monitor checkbox can indicate that the EDID reports sRGB primaries. If that is wrong for the panel, provide an appropriate ICC profile. An unusual adapter or display path can also prevent the expected NVIDIA control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Colors look washed out or tinted

Look for double correction: monitor sRGB mode plus novideo_SRGB, an ICC profile loaded in Windows plus the same profile used by the utility, Windows Auto Color Management plus the GPU clamp, or application-level conversion layered on top. Disable one layer at a time and retest.

The setting disappears after a reboot, driver update, or display change

Use Reapply and consider the startup or background options. The project says the setting generally persists through reboots and driver updates but can break. The repository’s issue tracker contains user reports involving driver versions, startup crashes, EDID data, gamma calibration, and clamp behavior; these are reports, not proof of a universal failure.

Banding appears

GPU calibration can make banding more visible, especially with 8-bit output. Configure dithering and set Bits to match the GPU output bit depth. Choose the available dithering mode based on visual results. Temporal dithering may reduce banding but can be uncomfortable for people sensitive to flicker or motion.

The cursor looks different

The project documents a cursor issue in which the mouse pointer is not transformed in the same way as the desktop image. Software cursor rendering is listed as a workaround.

Alternatives

  • Monitor sRGB preset: Best for simplicity and independence from Windows or NVIDIA behavior, provided the preset is accurate and its locked controls are acceptable.
  • Windows Auto Color Management: Worth testing on supported Windows 11 systems, especially with a Turing-generation or newer NVIDIA GPU.
  • Application-level ICC management: Appropriate for color-managed image and video applications, but it will not guarantee correct output in every game, launcher, desktop component, or legacy program.
  • Hardware calibration: A colorimeter or spectrophotometer is the better route for measured white point, gamma, grayscale, and profile accuracy. It does not by itself solve unmanaged-application behavior.
  • AMD driver controls: The novideo_sRGB README notes that AMD has a comparable hidden driver setting, but that implementation is not identical to this NVIDIA utility.

Verdict

novideo_sRGB is a practical solution for Windows users with an NVIDIA GPU and a wide-gamut monitor that lacks a trustworthy, usable sRGB mode. Its greatest value is preserving the monitor’s native controls while reducing oversaturation in SDR output.

Use it as a targeted gamut-clamping tool, not as a guarantee of full professional calibration. Start with EDID and the Clamped setting, avoid stacking correction systems, disable it for HDR, and retest after NVIDIA driver, Windows, firmware, monitor-mode, or connection changes.
