Samsung Notes is the better free default for most Galaxy owners; Notewise is the stronger specialist choice for people who work heavily with PDFs, want richer notebook organization, or need access across Android and Apple devices. They are built around different priorities, so the right choice depends less on which has more features and more on how you capture, organize, and back up your notes. This comparison reflects documented features and availability as of August 18, 2026; app capabilities and plans can change.

Samsung Notes prioritizes convenience
Samsung Notes is a general-purpose notebook built into the Galaxy experience. It handles handwriting, typing, sketches, images, recordings, reminders, and PDF markup. Notes can use individual pages or an infinite-scrolling format. Its appeal is that S Pen capture, device features, and syncing fit naturally into compatible Galaxy devices without a separate core-app purchase.
That focus does not make it a bare-bones app: it can convert handwriting to text, organize notes into folders, and export to common formats. Its strengths are quick access and ecosystem integration rather than a large set of specialist document controls.

Notewise prioritizes handwritten documents
Notewise is designed more explicitly for handwritten notebooks, diagrams, study materials, and PDF work. Its documented tools include tags, page management, shapes, rulers, lasso selection, note links, split-screen viewing, and bulk export. That breadth can help when a notebook is a working document or part of a large study library, rather than simply a place to capture a thought.
Handwriting and S Pen use
Both apps support handwritten notes, but there is no substantiated universal winner for writing feel. Latency, smoothness, palm rejection, and the effect of stabilization depend on the tablet or phone, stylus, display, operating system, app version, and document being edited. Notewise’s update notes describe handwriting-performance improvements while noting device variation; they do not establish that it is faster on every Galaxy device. See the Notewise 2.11 changelog.
What Samsung Notes offers
Samsung documents S Pen writing, finger input, handwriting editing, and handwriting-to-text conversion. For people who rely on Galaxy-specific capture conveniences—such as screen-off writing where supported by their device—Samsung Notes is the natural place to start. Those hardware-dependent features should not be assumed on every Galaxy model.

What Notewise offers
Notewise documents adjustable stroke stabilization and a handwriting-to-text option, but Android conversion is not guaranteed on every tablet. Its support page says the feature depends on selected devices running Android 14 or later that expose the required system handwriting-recognition capability. Check the Notewise handwriting-conversion requirements for device-specific details.
For either app, test your actual stylus and a representative notebook before moving a major workflow. A feel that works well for brief notes may be less comfortable across a long lecture or a dense PDF.
PDF annotation and study workflows
For occasional markup, Samsung Notes can be enough: import a PDF, write or draw on it, add text boxes, then export the result. It does not edit existing text in the imported PDF. Samsung’s support guide describes the distinction: annotations and added text are supported, but the document’s original text is not editable.

Notewise is the stronger candidate when PDFs are central to the work. Its help center documents PDF text selection and text boxes, link handling, translation, handwriting conversion, and bulk export. A PDF & Text collection covers those workflows. Notewise’s March 2026 update says Android PDF export was improved with vectorized text, which can be useful for retaining crisp output; it is an update claim, not a guarantee that every object in every imported file will export identically. Match the app to the document
- Lecture slides or a short worksheet: Either app can be suitable for handwriting and simple markup.
- Textbooks, long papers, or many course PDFs: Notewise’s page tools, tags, links, and bulk operations make it the more promising workflow to evaluate.
- Scanned pages: Test recognition and export with your actual scans; image-heavy PDFs can behave differently from text-based documents.
- Assignments submitted as PDFs: Export a sample and inspect page order, links, text selection, image quality, and file size in the software and submission system you use.
Neither vendor’s documentation establishes identical performance or export fidelity for every large or image-heavy PDF. Before committing, import a representative document, annotate several pages, add the elements you normally use, export it, and open the result in your intended reader or submission service. Treat PDF export as an interchange copy, not proof that the original editable project can be reconstructed in another app.
Organization and finding notes later
For a few daily notes, folders and search may be all the structure you need. Samsung Notes supports folders, search, and categorization; on PC, Samsung also documents subfolders. Its Samsung PC guide explains the PC environment and its compatibility limits.
When you are managing dozens of notebooks or hundreds of PDFs, organization means more than having folders. Notewise documents tags, sorting, note links, page reordering, note merging, and bulk import and export in its note-taking documentation. Those controls may make a large library easier to maintain, but they also add complexity that a casual user may not need.
Search across handwriting, scans, or PDF content is especially dependent on recognition capabilities, supported languages, and device or plan conditions. Notewise’s 3.1 update notes describe multilingual recognition and AI interaction with notes. Confirm current feature availability and language support in the app rather than assuming every note is searchable in the same way.

Both apps have capabilities beyond static text, but their AI features are not interchangeable and are conditional.

Samsung Notes and Galaxy AI
Samsung documents recording support and Galaxy AI features such as formatting, summaries, translation, and transcription in Samsung Notes. Note Assist availability is limited to selected phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, requires a Samsung account and an internet connection, and the listed functions require 200 to 4,000 characters. Newer recording and PDF features may depend on later One UI versions; Samsung identifies PDF translation as a One UI 8 feature in its Samsung Notes support information. Check your device’s software and feature eligibility before relying on a particular AI tool.
Notewise AI
Notewise’s September 2025 update describes AI chat with notes, audio guides, multilingual text recognition, and Android handwriting-to-text improvements. Its 3.1 changelog records those additions. Feature access, account requirements, pricing, and processing details can change; the cited update does not establish that every capability is available on every platform or plan. Check the current in-app terms before placing sensitive material into an AI feature.

Notewise Unlimited is not the same thing as Notewise Cloud. Unlimited is generally tied to the platform where it was purchased and may store notes locally. Cloud is the account-based subscription for cross-platform synchronization. Buying Unlimited on Android does not itself provide an iOS license or Cloud sync. Samsung Notes sync
Samsung Notes can synchronize through Samsung Cloud and a Samsung account across compatible Galaxy devices. Samsung also documents synchronization with Microsoft OneNote, but that should not be treated as a full two-way replacement for Samsung Notes without checking how it behaves on your devices. The PC app is optimized for Galaxy Book computers; Samsung warns it may not be compatible with other Windows PCs. It is not a comparable iPhone, iPad, or web option.
Notewise local storage and Cloud
With local-only use, including Unlimited, notes can be lost after uninstalling the app, clearing its storage, a factory reset, or device-storage failure unless you have exported or otherwise backed them up. Notewise describes these risks in its data-loss guidance.
Notewise Cloud keeps notes in the cloud with cached local copies and provides access across supported platforms, but requires an active subscription. Access to cloud-only notes can be restricted after expiry or sign-out. Storage exhaustion can also restrict access; Notewise says excess data may be marked for deletion after seven days unless space is freed or the plan is upgraded. Sync is not the same as an independent backup or a migration plan. Export irreplaceable notebooks periodically, and do so before uninstalling an app, changing plans, resetting a device, or switching platforms.
Pricing, exports, and lock-in
Samsung Notes’ core app is bundled with compatible Galaxy devices. Notewise offers separate Unlimited and Cloud options; prices and feature limits vary by platform and region, so check the official Notewise pricing page before purchasing. Unlimited purchases through Google Play or Apple’s App Store are platform-specific. Notewise’s upgrade guide describes purchase routes.
Samsung Notes can export or share notes as Samsung Notes files, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, images, or text. Notewise documents multiple import and export workflows, including PDFs and bulk operations. Export options reduce friction, but they do not guarantee that every element—such as audio, links, layers, or page structure—will transfer intact. Test the formats you depend on before making one app your permanent archive.
Which app should you choose?
Choose Samsung Notes for Galaxy-first everyday use
- You own compatible Galaxy devices and want notes to work with minimal setup.
- You mainly capture quick notes, meeting notes, lists, or occasional PDF markups.
- You value S Pen and Galaxy integration more than extensive document controls.
- You prefer a bundled app and Samsung’s supported sync options.
Choose Notewise for document-heavy handwriting
- You annotate textbooks, lecture slides, research papers, or many PDFs.
- You want tags, page controls, note links, or bulk operations for a larger library.
- You are willing to check plan terms and keep exports or backups current.
- You use Android and Apple devices and are prepared to use Notewise Cloud for cross-platform access.
Think twice if your main need is broader access
If you need dependable note access from an arbitrary Windows PC, an iPhone, or the web, verify the specific platform support before moving your archive. Samsung Notes is most compelling inside Galaxy and supported Galaxy Book environments; Notewise cross-platform access depends on Cloud and its current supported-platform details. Neither app should be assumed to provide identical features everywhere.
Can you use both?
Yes. A practical split is Samsung Notes for quick S Pen capture, reminders, and Galaxy-specific tasks, with Notewise reserved for course materials, research PDFs, and long-form notebooks. Set a rule for which app owns each kind of note, so you do not create competing versions. Export important Notewise work to a neutral format such as PDF, and keep a copy outside the app before major device or plan changes.
