Yes. Notepad++ dropped Windows XP support in version 7.9.3, released on February 15, 2021. The project lists version 7.9.2 as the last release that can run on XP. That does not mean 7.9.2 is still maintained: it receives no current Notepad++ support, and XP itself has been unsupported by Microsoft since April 8, 2014.
The exact Windows XP cutoff
The Notepad++ project announced the end of Windows XP support with Notepad++ 7.9.3. Its version history identifies 7.9.2 as the last version for XP. The project also lists 7.9.2 as the last version that can run on Windows Server 2003 in its supported-systems table.
The project gives “technical reasons” for ending XP compatibility; it does not identify a more specific cause in the cited release information. The timeline is separate from Microsoft’s: Windows XP extended support ended April 8, 2014, years before Notepad++ ended compatibility.
What “no longer supports XP” means
Notepad++ 7.9.2 may still run on an XP computer, but it is an old release, not a supported or maintained one. Do not expect current bug fixes, security fixes, plugin maintenance, or normal project support for an XP installation. The project’s table describes the last version that can run under listed Windows conditions; it is not a guarantee for every computer or every component.

Newer Notepad++ releases are not supported installation targets for XP. Depending on the XP edition, service pack, package, and hardware, an installer might refuse, the application might install but not start, or the main program might launch while plugins or other components fail. There is no single error message or outcome to rely on. A portable package is not a workaround: portable and installer packages still depend on operating-system compatibility, and plugins have their own requirements.
Check which version is installed
- Open Notepad++.
- Select Help, then About Notepad++.
- Read and record the version number.
If the program will not open, find its executable in Windows Explorer, right-click it, choose Properties, and check the Details tab. The information shown can vary by build. You can also check the version stated on the installer or portable package you kept.
If you have to keep using XP
If a legacy workflow requires XP, use Notepad++ 7.9.2 only with the understanding that both the editor and operating system are obsolete. Get the package from the official Notepad++ 7.9.2 archive, rather than an unverified software mirror. Preserve the installer and record where it came from; an old download is a supply-chain risk, and its age does not make it safe.
- Back up important documents and Notepad++ settings before changing the installation. Keep a separate copy of the
pluginsfolder if your workflow depends on plugins. - Do not use the in-app updater on XP to try to obtain a newer release.
- Test 7.9.2 with a non-critical text file before using it in your normal workflow. Start without third-party plugins, then restore required plugins one at a time.
- Keep the XP computer offline or tightly restricted wherever possible. Do not use it for ordinary web browsing, email, banking, password management, or other sensitive work.
For basic text editing, XP’s built-in Notepad may be enough. If you consider another editor, check its vendor’s official requirements for XP, 32-bit or x64 support, and offline installation; do not assume a modern editor supports XP. Another option is to transfer files through a controlled process and edit them on a supported computer.

If a newer release is already installed
Before uninstalling anything, back up settings, documents, and any required plugins. Then remove the unsupported version, reboot if Windows requests it, and install the official 7.9.2 package. Test without plugins first. If the installer fails, an official portable package may be worth trying, but it cannot fix a deeper operating-system incompatibility.
If 7.9.2 also fails, check the XP service-pack level, permissions, antivirus interference, system-file problems, and hardware-specific issues. Compatibility information sets a boundary, not a guarantee that reinstalling will solve every failure. XP is not one identical environment: edition, service pack, 32-bit versus Professional x64, and physical versus virtual hardware can all matter. The Notepad++ table is intended for the last service pack of each Windows generation.

The Notepad++ project says it supports Windows versions still supported by Microsoft and documents older systems separately. Moving to a supported operating system or replacing the computer is the best route to current Notepad++ releases and a safer general-purpose machine. Check drivers and essential legacy applications first, and back up files, configuration, plugins, and file associations as part of the migration.
That change can take time: old hardware or proprietary software may not work on a newer system, and migration can involve testing and downtime. If XP is indispensable for a specific task, consider keeping it as a dedicated, isolated machine or running it in a virtual machine on a supported host. Virtualization can preserve a legacy environment, but it does not make XP or the old editor supported; keep general work on the supported host.
