Notepad++ 8.3.2 refined large-file handling, but it did not introduce the main performance improvements. Those arrived in Notepad++ 8.3: the x64 build lost its 2-GB file-opening restriction, and the project reported faster loading and better editing and browsing for files around 200 MB. Version 8.3.2 added better handling of files over 2 GB in command-line and session-file workflows, but the project later marked it unstable because of critical regressions. For a new installation, use a later release; 8.3.3 was the immediate safer successor.
What changed in Notepad++ 8.3?
Released February 3, 2022, Notepad++ 8.3 made the foundational large-file changes. The official changelog says the x64 build no longer had the previous 2-GB file-opening restriction and describes improved loading, editing, and browsing performance for files around 200 MB. It also records a fix for a Find in Files crash. These are qualitative release-note claims, not published benchmark results, so they do not establish how quickly a particular file will open on a particular PC. Notepad++ official changelog.
The release also introduced compatibility concerns for plugins following the large-file changes. That is a reason to check plugin behavior, not evidence that every plugin failed.

Released February 27, 2022, 8.3.2 extended support for files larger than 2 GB in command-line and session-file handling. Its announcement also lists better exit performance under certain settings and refinements to automatic session saving on exit, along with fixes involving saving, encoding, auto-completion, user-defined language dialogs, search results, and x86 Sysnative path handling. That scope matters: better command-line and session handling is not a promise that every multi-gigabyte file will open quickly, remain responsive, or save safely. The release notes do not provide a universal maximum practical file size or quantified performance results.
What large-file support does—and does not—guarantee
- Architecture matters. The removal of the 2-GB opening restriction was specified for the x64 build. Do not assume the 32-bit/x86 build has the same capacity.
- Opening is only one part of the job. A file that opens may still be slow to scroll, search, replace text in, syntax-highlight, or save.
- File and system characteristics matter. Available memory, encoding, line length, syntax highlighting, plugins, undo history, and session restoration can all affect how usable a large file is. These are practical considerations, not a set of performance measurements published for 8.3.2.
- There is no claim of unlimited size. The 8.3 and 8.3.2 release notes describe specific improvements, not a guarantee for arbitrarily large files or every workflow.
For a meaningful evaluation, check the tasks you actually need: opening, scrolling through long lines, searching and replacing, saving, and restoring a session. Compare behavior with plugins enabled and disabled if plugins are part of your setup. The official release notes do not supply benchmark figures for these tests.

Why 8.3.2 is not the version to install now
The official changelog later marked 8.3.2 unstable because of critical regressions. Among the problems it records was a crash when opening a session file. Version 8.3.3, released March 15, 2022, fixed that session-opening regression and added a mechanism to avoid loading incompatible plugins. The project’s release history therefore makes 8.3.3 the safer immediate successor when discussing this release series; for current use, choose a later Notepad++ release rather than treating 8.3.3 as current. The regression history does not mean every 8.3.2 installation failed or that files were universally corrupted. It does mean the release is a poor default recommendation, especially if a workflow depends on session restoration or plugins.

How to handle a very large file more safely
- Use the x64 build on a 64-bit Windows system when working with files above 2 GB. In Notepad++, check ? → About Notepad++ and confirm the architecture shown. Menu wording can vary across releases.
- Make a backup copy before editing. Test on the copy rather than trusting a successful open as proof that a save will be safe.
- Reduce plugin variables. If the editor crashes or behaves unexpectedly, try a launch without plugins or use the compatibility behavior introduced in 8.3.3 when available in your installed release.
- Test the whole workflow. Try the scrolling, search, replacement, and save operations you need on a disposable copy. Avoid making a critical change until the save behavior is confirmed.
- Recover from session trouble cautiously. If restoring a session triggers a crash, avoid restoring the problematic session and reopen the file manually from a backup copy.
- Watch system resources. Closing memory-intensive applications can reduce competition for resources, but it cannot guarantee that a particular file will be responsive.
For files so large that loading them into a general-purpose editor is impractical, or when you need streaming inspection or safer partial editing, consider a tool designed for that workflow rather than relying on Notepad++ to behave like a log-analysis system or database.

Notepad++ can suit Windows users who want a general-purpose editor with syntax highlighting, search, regular expressions, tabs, macros, or plugins and whose files remain manageable on their system. It is free and open source. A dedicated large-file workflow may be a better fit when files are several gigabytes, contain extremely long lines, must be inspected without loading the whole file, or need explicit safeguards for partial edits.

Windows alternatives include EmEditor, whose official downloads page distinguishes Free and Professional editions and lists installers, portable downloads, and legacy versions. UltraEdit is a commercial editor aimed at developers and IT professionals; its vendor also provides a perpetual pricing page. Neither product should be assumed faster for every workload without a like-for-like test, and the right choice depends on the file and operations involved.
