Western Digital’s May 2024 launch of 6TB portable hard drives showed that 2.5-inch mechanical storage still has a place—but these are external drives, not slim laptop replacements. The new capacity is aimed at backups, media libraries and game storage, where space per dollar matters more than SSD-like speed. Their six-platter SMR design, substantial thickness and workload-dependent write performance are the trade-offs to understand before buying.
What WD launched
On May 16, 2024, Western Digital announced 6TB versions of its My Passport, My Passport Ultra, My Passport for Mac and My Passport Works with USB-C portable drives, along with the WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive and SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD. WD called the launch the highest-capacity 2.5-inch portable HDD offering at the time; that is a claim about the market and date of the announcement, not a permanent record. The products were announced as available through selected retailers and WD’s store. WD’s launch announcement listed U.S. launch MSRPs of $179.99 for My Passport models, $199.99 for My Passport Ultra models, $184.99 for the USB-C-focused My Passport and P10, and $229.99 for ArmorATD. Those are May 2024 prices, not current quotes.
The product families serve different needs. My Passport is the mainstream option for general portable storage; Ultra adds a more premium design and features such as backup and password software. Mac versions are configured for Mac users, while Works with USB-C emphasizes that connector. The WD_BLACK P10 is positioned for game-library storage. The G-DRIVE ArmorATD is the rugged, field-oriented choice. Similar capacity does not make these products interchangeable: enclosure, format, compatibility and protection differ.
Six platters, SMR and an unusually thick drive
According to AnandTech, WD confirmed that the mechanism uses six shingled magnetic recording (SMR) platters. SMR overlaps recording tracks to pack more data onto a disk. The six-platter construction helps explain how WD reached 6TB in this drive class, and why the units are much thicker than common 2.5-inch laptop drives. It is not simply a thin, conventional laptop disk with a new label.

- World’s First 6TB 2.5” Portable Hard Drive
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
For example, WD lists the 6TB My Passport Ultra at 22.2 mm tall, compared with 14.0 mm for its 2TB version. The 6TB G-DRIVE ArmorATD is 32 mm thick, with its ruggedized enclosure contributing to its size. WD’s My Passport Ultra data sheet and ArmorATD data sheet document those dimensions.
That makes “2.5-inch” a poor shortcut for judging fit. It describes the drive family, not a guarantee that a mechanism will fit a laptop bay, console bay or slim NAS tray. Check the device’s maximum supported drive height. WD announced these as external products, not as ordinary bare SATA upgrade drives. Removing a mechanism from its enclosure can void warranty coverage, damage or bypass the USB bridge, and leave you with an unsupported compatibility problem.

What SMR means for everyday use
SMR can work well for large sequential reads and writes, such as copying a media archive or making a backup. It is less suited to workloads that repeatedly rewrite many small areas of the disk. Random writes, frequent file replacement, scratch storage, virtual machines, databases and busy torrent libraries can trigger much slower write behavior as the drive reorganizes data. The slowdown depends on the workload; it is not the expected speed for every transfer, nor by itself proof of a defective drive.

Treat that as a workload-dependent example, not a guaranteed floor or typical everyday rate for every 6TB model. WD’s advertised figure is up to 130 MB/s read; it is not a sustained write benchmark. For a drive that will host active project files, editing caches or software that constantly changes data, an SSD is usually the more appropriate tool.

- 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- SuperSpeed USB (5 Gbps); USB 2.0 compatible
Speed, connection and capacity in practice
The products use a USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0-class) 5Gbps interface, and some variants use a USB-C connector. USB-C describes the plug, not USB4 or SSD performance. The mechanical disk is the main speed limit, so a faster USB link would not make it behave like an SSD. Real transfer rates depend on the host, cable, filesystem, file sizes, temperature and workload; large sequential transfers are the favorable case, while small random files feel much slower.
Even at the advertised maximum read rate, moving or restoring a full 6TB takes many hours. WD uses decimal capacity, where 1TB is 1 trillion bytes, so an operating system will show less than 6TB after conversion and formatting. Filesystem overhead and bundled software can reduce free space further. The standard My Passport Ultra is listed as exFAT and supports Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later; Mac-oriented models use different formatting and may require a driver for Windows access without reformatting. ArmorATD works with macOS out of the box and requires reformatting for Windows. Reformatting erases data, so check the exact SKU and back up files first. Older systems and unusual USB controllers should be checked separately.

Which model suits which job?
- My Passport: General backups and portable files when you want a straightforward consumer drive.
- My Passport Ultra: General storage with USB-C and bundled management or password features; verify the specific operating systems and included software for the SKU.
- Mac and Ultra for Mac: Mac-oriented formatting and compatibility. Plan the filesystem if the drive will also be used with Windows; reformatting can erase its contents.
- My Passport Works with USB-C: A choice for users whose devices use USB-C, while still a mechanical 5Gbps-class drive rather than a high-speed SSD.
- WD_BLACK P10: Portable game-library storage for PC and consoles. WD says it can store PS5 games and play PS4 games; check compatibility and storage behavior for the console and firmware you own.
- G-DRIVE ArmorATD: A bulkier field-storage option for photographers and other users who value added enclosure protection. WD lists IP54 protection, up to 1,000 pounds of crush resistance, and shock testing up to 1 meter for 4TB, 5TB and 6TB models. These are manufacturer claims under specified conditions, not a promise that the drive is indestructible or safe from a drop while spinning.
For PS5 owners, an external HDD is useful for storing a library, but it is not a replacement for the internal NVMe SSD: PS5 games generally need to be moved to internal storage to play, while PS4 games can be played from a supported USB drive. Load times and the playing experience will not match internal SSD storage. Confirm the current rules for your console before buying.

HDD or SSD?
Choose one of these 6TB HDDs when capacity and cost per terabyte are more important than latency, and your main tasks are backup, archiving, media transport or storing a game library. Mechanical storage has moving parts, can make noise or vibrate, and is vulnerable to shocks—especially while operating. Avoid carrying it around while it is active, use a reliable USB port rather than an underpowered hub, and eject it through the operating system before disconnecting during or after writes.

Choose an SSD for active editing, scratch files, virtual machines, databases, frequent rewrites, low-latency access or regular use while traveling. It costs more per terabyte in many buying situations, but offers much faster random access and has no spinning platters. A powered 3.5-inch desktop HDD may make more sense for a stationary archive if portability is not important. Cloud backup can provide an off-site copy, but brings recurring fees, upload time and bandwidth considerations.
One drive is not a backup strategy
A 6TB portable drive can hold a large copy of important files, but it remains one device that can fail, be lost, damaged or encrypted by malware when connected. For irreplaceable data, keep more than one copy, with at least one disconnected or stored elsewhere; version history or an off-site backup also helps with accidental deletion and ransomware. Password features are useful, but do not replace a tested backup plan.
WD lists a three-year limited warranty on some of the relevant products, but warranty duration and terms can depend on country and exact SKU. Check the local product page and warranty before purchase. Likewise, compare current prices rather than assuming the 2024 U.S. launch MSRPs still reflect today’s value.
