Node Unblocker is a self-hosted Node.js library that proxies and rewrites remote webpages; it is not a universal anti-bot bypass. Its documented Express setup is short, but whether a target page works depends on the site’s authentication, scripts, and browser behavior. Here is how to mount it, what its options do, where the project says it has compatibility gaps, and when to test a managed alternative.
What Node Unblocker does—and what it does not
Unblocker is a Node.js library that sits in your application and proxies requests to remote webpages, rewriting responses so the proxied page can work through your chosen URL prefix. The project documents an Express-compatible middleware interface and a handler for WebSocket upgrades. That makes it a way to integrate proxying into a Node application, not a hosted scraping service that promises to retrieve arbitrary pages.

For scraping, the distinction matters. A proxy can help route a request and rewrite some page content, but a successful response is not necessarily useful extracted data. A page may depend on login flows, browser-side messaging, scripts, or access checks that the library does not handle automatically. The Unblocker project specifically cautions that OAuth login forms and pages relying on postMessage are unlikely to work out of the box. It also says that advanced services including Roblox, Discord, YouTube, and Instagram do not currently work in its documented state. Those are the project’s stated compatibility limits, not an independent or current test of each site.
Do not treat Unblocker as a CAPTCHA solver or as permission to evade a site’s access controls. Check the target site’s terms and applicable law, and build your scraper to respect authorization, rate limits, and data-use restrictions.

Set up Unblocker with Express
The package documentation’s basic integration uses CommonJS, mounts the middleware early in the Express chain, and attaches the upgrade handler to the HTTP server so proxied WebSockets can be handled. Install the package in your project first:
npm install --save unblocker
Then create an application along these lines, following the project’s documented example:
const express = require('express');
const Unblocker = require('unblocker');
const app = express();
const unblocker = new Unblocker({ prefix: '/proxy/' });
// Mount early in the Express middleware chain, not beneath a subdirectory.
app.use(unblocker);
app.listen(process.env.PORT || 8080)
.on('upgrade', unblocker.onUpgrade);
The default prefix in this example is /proxy/. Start the application with Node, then send a browser or client request to a proxied URL under that prefix using the URL format expected by the package. The short example establishes the middleware and upgrade hook; it does not provide a complete scraping workflow, content extractor, authentication setup, or guarantee that a particular destination page will render correctly.
Mounting and WebSocket details
- Mount it early. The example puts
app.use(unblocker)before application routes that could otherwise consume the same request. - Do not mount it under a subdirectory. The project example calls for mounting the middleware at the application level rather than beneath another route prefix.
- Keep the upgrade handler. Register
unblocker.onUpgradeon the server’supgradeevent if the proxied pages need WebSocket support. Ordinary Express middleware does not by itself handle HTTP upgrade requests. - Choose the prefix deliberately. The
prefixoption determines the path prefix used for proxied URLs. If you change it, make your client URLs and any proxy-facing routing consistent with that value.
Configuration options you may need
The project lists hooks for adapting request and response handling, controlling built-in processing, injecting client scripts, choosing which content types are processed, and overriding HTTP agents. These are integration points, not automatic compatibility fixes: custom logic still needs to be designed for the site and response you are handling.
| Option | What it controls | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
prefix |
The URL path prefix for proxied requests. | When setting the public route your client will use to reach proxied pages. |
requestMiddleware |
Custom processing of requests. | When your application needs request-specific handling before the proxied request proceeds. |
responseMiddleware |
Custom processing of responses. | When you need application-specific response handling beyond the package’s built-in behavior. |
standardMiddleware |
Whether the built-in middleware is enabled. | When changing or diagnosing the default processing pipeline; understand which behavior you are disabling before turning it off. |
clientScripts |
Scripts injected into the client to route certain browser requests through the proxy. | When browser-side requests need proxy routing. This does not mean every script-driven site will work. |
processContentTypes |
Which response content types receive built-in processing. | When limiting rewriting or processing to selected response types. |
httpAgent / httpsAgent |
HTTP and HTTPS agent overrides. | When your Node deployment needs custom agent behavior for outbound connections. |
Use the package’s own documentation for exact option shapes and supported values; the descriptions above explain their roles, not a complete configuration schema. In particular, changing content processing or disabling standard middleware can alter the behavior the integration relies on.
Will it work for your scraping target?
There is no documented universal compatibility list or independently measured success rate established here. Evaluate the actual pages and workflows you need, not just whether the server returns an HTTP status. A usable scrape means that the page content you need is present and can be extracted consistently.
Expect additional work or failure when a site relies on
- OAuth login flows. The project warns that OAuth login forms are unlikely to work out of the box.
postMessagecommunication. The README identifies pages using this browser messaging pattern as a compatibility gap; it names Google and Facebook as examples in that warning.- Advanced browser-side behavior. The project says Roblox, Discord, YouTube, and Instagram do not currently work in its documented state. Treat that as project documentation, not a fresh test or permanent statement about those services.
- Access controls and bot checks. The package description does not establish that it defeats CAPTCHAs, anti-bot systems, or site restrictions. Do not assume it does.
A practical target-page test
- Choose a small set of URLs that represent the pages and workflows you actually need, including any permitted login or navigation flow.
- Run them through your integration and inspect the returned page content, links, assets, and any browser-side behavior that matters to your extraction.
- Compare extracted fields with what you are authorized to collect from the target. An HTTP success alone is not evidence that the right content loaded.
- Repeat the test across representative pages and over time if the scraper is operationally important. A single successful page does not establish broader site compatibility.
- If a page depends on a documented gap or access-control circumvention, do not treat proxy rewriting as a workaround guarantee; seek an authorized data interface or another permitted approach.
Debugging and deployment troubleshooting
Enable the package’s debug output
The project recommends enabling its debug namespace with this command:
DEBUG=unblocker:* node mycoolapp.js
Replace mycoolapp.js with your application entry point. Use the output to inspect the library’s diagnostic messages while reproducing the problematic request. Avoid publishing logs that contain credentials, cookies, or other sensitive request data.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Requests bypass the proxy or reach an application route instead. | Middleware placement or URL prefix mismatch. | Mount app.use(unblocker) early and ensure the client uses the configured prefix. |
| A proxied feature using WebSockets fails. | The server may not have the upgrade handler attached. | Attach unblocker.onUpgrade to the server’s upgrade event as in the documented example. |
| Redirects behave incorrectly behind Nginx. | The project notes a possible slash-merging issue in Nginx deployments. | Its troubleshooting note says the Nginx configuration may need merge_slashes off;. Verify the effect in your own routing setup. |
| The page loads but login, embedded content, or interactions fail. | Site behavior may depend on OAuth, postMessage, or other advanced browser behavior. |
Enable debug output, isolate the failing flow, and compare it with the project’s stated compatibility caveats. Do not assume configuration alone can make an unsupported flow work. |
| Only some response content appears to be rewritten. | Built-in processing may be limited by content type or middleware settings. | Review processContentTypes and standardMiddleware, then test one response type at a time. |
Self-hosted library or managed scraping API?
Unblocker is embedded in your Node application, so you control its integration and can supply custom middleware. You also operate the application and diagnose target-specific behavior. A managed scraping API is called as a service; vendors describe their offerings as handling browser rendering, proxy infrastructure, and common blocking obstacles. Those are vendor descriptions, not verified comparative results, and performance must be checked against your own permitted target URLs.
Rank #2
| Decision factor | Self-hosted Unblocker | Managed API |
|---|---|---|
| Integration and control | Node library within your Express application, with request/response middleware hooks. | Service call; exact integration and capabilities depend on vendor. |
| Operations | You deploy and maintain the Node application and investigate compatibility. | The provider operates its service infrastructure; you still need to validate returned content and handle your own application logic. |
| Browser and obstacle handling | The package’s documented scope does not establish universal browser rendering or anti-bot handling. | Providers advertise rendering, proxy pools, retries, CAPTCHA handling, or related features; confirm the specific plan and test results yourself. |
| Cost model | No public pricing is stated on the cited package page; commercial licensing and support are available by contacting the maintainer. | Provider pricing and billing units vary and should be checked against current terms. |
For example, ScrapeUnblocker advertises Node.js SDK support and a starting price of “0.55€ per 1,000 calls”; that is the vendor’s stated figure, not an independently verified comparison, and live pricing may change. IPRoyal’s help page dated July 9, 2026 describes its Web Unblocker as automating retries, CAPTCHA handling, IP and fingerprint rotation, and geo-restrictions. These descriptions do not establish success for your target pages.
When comparing a provider, measure whether the fields and page states you need are returned, not only response codes or a vendor’s general success claim. No independent comparative benchmark is established here.

If your task is to capture a visual record of a webpage rather than build a custom proxy-and-extraction pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is not a replacement for a scraper that must extract structured data or bypass access controls. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Licensing and production considerations
The package documentation identifies Unblocker as AGPL-3.0 and says commercial licensing and support are available by contacting the maintainer. It does not publish a price on the cited page. If you plan to deploy it commercially or incorporate it into a product, review the license with qualified counsel for your specific use rather than inferring obligations from a short summary.
