Yes—if the price and fit are right. The original Noctua NH-D15 remains a quiet, durable dual-tower cooler for mainstream gaming and productivity PCs. However, the newer NH-D15 G2 is now Noctua’s flagship, with more heatpipes, redesigned fans and mounting refinements. Buy the original at a substantial discount, choose the G2 for maximum air-cooling headroom and platform-specific features, and verify case, memory and motherboard clearance before ordering either.
What the Noctua NH-D15 is
The NH-D15 is a large, dual-tower CPU air cooler. Six nickel-plated copper heatpipes transfer heat from the base into two aluminium fin stacks, while two 140 mm-class NF-A15 PWM fans move air through them. There is no pump, radiator or coolant: only a heatsink, fans and Noctua’s spring-loaded SecuFirm2 mounting system. The original specification and socket details are listed on Noctua’s product page.
The standard model is brown and beige; NH-D15 chromax.black is the same basic cooler with a black finish. The NH-D15S is a different, asymmetrical single-fan-oriented design, not an NH-D15 variant.

Noctua says the G2 has 20% more fin-stack surface area, revised asymmetrical towers and a 7 mm southward AM5 offset option. It includes NT-H2 paste, an AM5 paste guard, LGA1700 shim washers, a cleaning wipe and a Torx T20 screwdriver. See the G2 overview and official specifications.

Those changes make the G2 the stronger design, particularly for sustained high-heat workloads. They do not guarantee one universal temperature improvement: results depend on CPU power, motherboard limits, ambient temperature, case airflow, fan speed, mounting and the G2 variant. Noctua says its advantage is most pronounced at extreme loads around 250 W and above; treat that as a manufacturer claim rather than a universal CPU rating. Independent testing, including Tom’s Hardware’s review, also found that the price premium can be difficult to justify against much cheaper Thermalright coolers.
Which NH-D15 G2 variant?

Do not choose solely from a CPU name or the assumption that “LBC means AMD.” Base curvature, socket loading and the actual contact surface matter. Check Noctua’s variant listings and compatibility guidance for your exact processor and motherboard. On AM5, the 7 mm offset can improve contact over the CCD area; Noctua notes that the regular version can perform similarly to LBC with the relevant mounting configuration.

Cooling and noise expectations
The NH-D15 is an excellent quiet cooler when its fans can run at moderate speeds and the case has sensible intake and exhaust. It is well suited to gaming, office work and many rendering or compiling systems. A high-end CPU running unrestricted, sustained all-core workloads may benefit from the G2’s additional headroom or from a large 240, 280 or 360 mm AIO.

Temperature and noise change with package power, thermal density, fan curves, mounting pressure, paste, ambient temperature and case layout. Noise-normalized comparisons are more useful than maximum-RPM charts, and review temperatures should only be compared when the test CPU, power limits and methodology match.

Compatibility: case, RAM, motherboard and GPU
Case height
The original is approximately 165 mm tall; the G2 is 168 mm with fans. Treat the manufacturer’s CPU-cooler limit as a hard limit and leave a few millimetres of practical tolerance. The relevant measurement is the final fan height, not just the fin stack. Raising the front fan over tall memory makes the cooler taller.
Memory
In the original’s dual-fan configuration, Noctua’s guideline is memory up to 32 mm. Single-fan mode leaves up to 66 mm of clearance, while raising the front fan can accommodate taller RGB DIMMs only if the case has sufficient extra height. Check the exact module height and Noctua’s RAM compatibility list before purchasing.

Motherboard and graphics-card clearance
The G2’s offset layout improves clearance around the top PCIe x16 slot on many boards, but not all. Check for interference with the first PCIe slot, VRM and M.2 heatsinks, DIMM latches, rear-I/O shrouds and motherboard-edge headers. The installation manual specifically requires checking that clips and fins do not touch cards or board components.

Socket support
The current G2 specification lists AMD AM5 and AM4 plus Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200 and LGA115x-era sockets. Older LGA20xx square-ILM, LGA1366 and LGA775 systems may need optional kits. An older original NH-D15 may not include hardware for newer sockets, so verify the exact revision and included kit rather than relying on the socket name alone.

Installing the NH-D15 G2
- Shut down, disconnect power and remove the existing cooler.
- Confirm the exact CPU, motherboard, RAM, GPU and case in Noctua’s compatibility resources.
- Remove the centre fan before mounting the heatsink; the front fan usually can remain attached.
- Fit the correct backplate, spacers, mounting bars and screws for the socket and choose the permitted orientation or AM5 offset.
- Apply paste as specified in the manual: on LGA1851/LGA1700, four approximately 2 mm corner dots plus one 3–4 mm centre dot; on LGA1200/LGA115x, one approximately 4–5 mm centre dot.
- Place the heatsink and tighten both screws alternately by two or three turns. Stop when they stop; the manual specifies a maximum torque of 0.6 Nm.
- Reinstall and vertically adjust the centre/front fan for memory clearance. Connect both fans to the CPU header with the supplied splitter if needed.
- Low-noise adapters are optional. Do not put one adapter before the splitter if you intend to slow both fans.
Common problems and fixes
- Fan hits memory: raise it, use one fan, or use lower-profile DIMMs, then recheck case height.
- Heatsink touches a GPU, PCIe slot or VRM cooler: try only an orientation or offset supported by the manual and compatibility list; otherwise choose another cooler.
- High temperatures: check for protective-film residue, correct bar position, paste application, alternating screw tightening, fan direction, CPU-header connection and case airflow.
- Rattle or vibration: remove low-noise adapters temporarily, check clips and cables, inspect the fan curve and contact Noctua if noise persists. Tom’s Hardware reported inconsistent measurements and early fan-production concerns; that does not establish that every G2 is defective.
- Missing mounting hardware: identify the exact cooler revision and request the appropriate Noctua upgrade kit rather than mixing unrelated brackets.
- Transport: Noctua recommends removing the cooler before shipping or transporting a built PC because transport forces cannot be reliably calculated.
Alternatives
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE and Phantom Spirit 120 SE/EVO: Usually far cheaper and strong value choices for mainstream CPUs. They make more sense when price-per-degree matters more than Noctua’s documentation, accessory ecosystem and long-term support.
A 240/280/360 mm AIO: Consider one when the case cannot fit a 165–168 mm tower, when DIMM/PCIe clearance is difficult, or when sustained CPU power is unusually high. An AIO is not automatically quieter or more reliable: pump, radiator, tubing and fan behaviour all matter.
Noctua NH-D12L: A lower-height option for cases that reject the NH-D15, with less thermal mass for extreme workloads. It is a better fit when clearance—not maximum cooling—is the constraint.

- Buy the original NH-D15 when it is substantially discounted, your case supports about 165 mm, and your CPU is mainstream. It is also a sensible choice if you already own one and temperatures are acceptable.
- Buy the NH-D15 G2 for high sustained CPU power, AM5 offset mounting, LGA1700 contact concerns, newer fans and updated mounting hardware—provided the premium price is acceptable.
- Buy a Thermalright dual tower when budget and performance-per-dollar dominate and you accept less premium support and accessory availability.
- Buy an AIO when radiator support solves a clearance or heat-load problem, not simply because liquid cooling sounds faster.
Verdict
The original NH-D15 is not obsolete: it remains a premium, quiet and serviceable air cooler when discounted and properly fitted. The NH-D15 G2 is the more advanced choice, especially for demanding AM5 or high-power systems, but its premium is paying for incremental thermal headroom, refined fans, mounting hardware and support—not a guaranteed dramatic temperature drop. Check the exact case clearance, RAM height, motherboard layout, socket kit and G2 base recommendation before buying.
