The Radeon RX 580 can carry both video and audio over HDMI. If your television shows the desktop but stays silent, the usual cause is Windows using another output, a missing AMD display-audio driver, a TV audio setting, or an HDMI detection problem—not the card’s 8GB memory capacity. Follow the branch that matches your symptom before buying hardware.

These steps target Windows 10 and Windows 11. AMD’s RX 580 page still lists packages for both systems, although Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Check AMD’s page for the current package before installing.

Try these five checks first

  1. Turn on the TV and select the exact HDMI input connected to the RX 580.
  2. In Windows, select the TV or HDMI display-audio device as the output and default playback device.
  3. Unmute the TV and select its internal/TV speakers rather than Bluetooth, ARC/eARC, a soundbar, or an AV receiver.
  4. In Device Manager, confirm that an AMD display-audio device appears and is enabled.
  5. Install or reinstall the RX 580 package from AMD’s official support page, restart, and test again.

Microsoft identifies wrong output selection, disabled devices, driver faults, and HDMI-device selection as common Windows audio causes (Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guide).

First identify which symptom you have

Symptom Most likely area
The TV is absent from Windows output devices AMD display-audio driver, HDMI handshake, cable/port, adapter, or GPU detection
The TV appears, but there is no sound TV mute/output mode, Windows routing, application settings, audio format, or HDMI chain
Headphones work, but HDMI does not HDMI output selection, AMD driver, TV settings, or HDMI connection
No audio works anywhere General Windows audio, motherboard audio, or a separate driver/service issue; do not assume the RX 580 is responsible

Confirm the cable and HDMI path

  1. Connect the cable to an HDMI port on the RX 580, not the motherboard. Board layouts differ between Sapphire, XFX, MSI, PowerColor, and other manufacturers.
  2. Choose that same input on the TV.
  3. Try another TV HDMI input and a known-good cable.
  4. For testing, remove splitters, HDMI adapters, capture devices, AV receivers, and soundbars. Connect the RX 580 directly to the TV.
  5. If possible, test the RX 580 with another television or monitor that has speakers.

Video can continue working while audio fails because the wrong endpoint was selected or the HDMI device was not enumerated correctly. LG documents this video-without-audio pattern for PC-to-TV connections (LG’s HDMI audio guide). A normal RX 580 connection does not automatically require an HDMI 2.1 cable; requirements depend on resolution, refresh rate, length, and intermediary equipment.

If the TV is missing from Windows Sound

Inspect Device Manager

  1. Press Windows key + X and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Look for an entry such as AMD High Definition Audio Device, AMD Audio Device, or AMD HDMI/Display Audio. The label varies by driver and Windows version.
  4. Expand Display adapters and confirm that Radeon RX 580 appears without a warning icon.
  • If the AMD display-audio entry is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
  • A yellow warning icon means open Properties and record the error code before changing drivers.
  • If no AMD display-audio entry exists, concentrate on driver installation, hidden or disabled devices, HDMI detection, and hardware testing.

Reinstall the AMD graphics package

Download the package from AMD’s RX 580 driver page, not from a third-party “HDMI audio driver” site. The page showed AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.5.2, WHQL Recommended for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, released May 21, 2026, when checked; listings can change.

  1. Close games, browsers, media players, and recording software.
  2. Run the AMD installer and use its clean/reset option when offered if the existing installation may be damaged.
  3. Restart Windows, then recheck Device Manager and the Sound output list.

Do not substitute a motherboard Realtek package. Realtek normally serves motherboard analog or digital audio; HDMI audio from the RX 580 depends on AMD’s graphics/display-audio installation.

Reset the HDMI handshake

  1. Shut down the PC and turn off the TV.
  2. Unplug the TV from power for about one minute.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
  4. Turn on the TV first, select the correct input, and then start the PC.
  5. Test with one display and a direct RX 580-to-TV connection.

Adapters, receivers, splitters, ARC/eARC chains, and multiple displays can present different EDID audio capabilities to Windows.

Check the television’s audio path

  • Set sound output to TV speakers or Internal speakers.
  • Confirm mute, volume limits, and Bluetooth connections.
  • Temporarily disconnect a soundbar or receiver and disable ARC/eARC for direct testing.
  • Set HDMI input audio and digital sound output to Auto or PCM.

PCM/stereo is a compatibility test, not a universal fix. If stereo works but surround does not, investigate format support or the receiver/TV audio path.

Try a basic Windows format

  1. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
  2. Double-click the TV/HDMI playback device and open Advanced.
  3. Choose a basic option such as 16-bit, 48,000 Hz, if available.
  4. Temporarily clear exclusive-mode control and test again.

If sound works only intermittently

  • Power-cycle the TV and PC and start the TV on the correct input before Windows boots.
  • Replace a damaged, loose, unusually long, or movement-sensitive cable.
  • Test another TV input and another RX 580 port.
  • Use one display and remove adapters, splitters, and AV equipment.
  • If the problem began immediately after a driver update, try Windows’ driver rollback option; otherwise use the current AMD package.

Advanced configuration checks

Integrated graphics and BIOS

Systems with an AMD Ryzen APU or Intel integrated graphics can expose more than one display-audio device. Verify that the cable is on the RX 580, check the BIOS primary-display setting, and only disable unused integrated graphics when the motherboard manual supports it. Install chipset and BIOS updates from the system or motherboard maker. Reports of RX 580-plus-APU conflicts are configuration-specific, not proof of a universal incompatibility (AMD Community example; community report).

When replacement hardware is justified

Do not replace the RX 580 merely because HDMI audio is silent. Consider hardware failure only after testing multiple cables, TV inputs, displays, and RX 580 ports; reinstalling the AMD package; and confirming that the HDMI audio device remains absent. Additional artifacts, crashes, missing ports, or unstable display detection strengthen the hardware case.

Alternatives and their limits

  • DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter: Use an active, audio-capable model when the native HDMI port is faulty; compatibility can still limit audio or display modes.
  • USB audio, speakers, or headphones: Bypasses the RX 580 HDMI path, but does not send sound through the TV.
  • HDMI audio extractor: Separates HDMI audio to optical or analog output, adding another powered device and handshake point. A Cable Matters 4K60 extractor suits basic Toslink/3.5mm needs; its 48Gbps eARC model is for more complex ARC/eARC and home-theater chains. A simple StarTech HD2A provides USB-powered 3.5mm stereo. None repairs a missing AMD driver or defective GPU port.

For extractor setup issues, see Cable Matters’ troubleshooting guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the RX 580 8GB support audio over HDMI?

Yes. The GPU can transmit audio and video through HDMI when its display-audio driver is installed, the TV is detected, and the TV accepts the signal. The 8GB memory designation is unrelated to audio support.

Why does HDMI show video but no sound?

Windows may be using another output, the AMD display-audio driver may be missing, the TV may be muted or routed to external audio, or the HDMI handshake, cable, port, or intermediary equipment may be failing.

Do I need a Realtek driver?

Not for the RX 580’s HDMI output. Realtek generally controls motherboard audio; install the AMD graphics package for GPU HDMI audio.

Can DisplayPort-to-HDMI carry audio?

An audio-capable adapter can, but passive or incompatible adapters may pass video only or restrict supported modes.

Is the RX 580 defective?

Possibly, but only after driver, output-selection, TV, cable, port, and alternate-display tests leave the AMD audio device absent or the port unreliable.
