The 2024 story is real, but its headline is misleading. Nio was reportedly validating Kuavo, a humanoid robot made by Leju Robotics, at its Chinese vehicle factories. Huawei’s role was the software and AI ecosystem around HarmonyOS, Pangu and connectivity—not the manufacture of Kuavo’s physical body. The available reporting describes a test or validation exercise, not a confirmed full-production deployment or replacement of factory workers.

What happened in July 2024?

Chinese financial and technology media reported on July 6, 2024, that Nio was validating Kuavo at its vehicle-production facilities in Hefei, Anhui. The sites are generally identified as Nio’s F1 and F2 factories, with F2 located in NeoPark. The central report is CnEVPost’s account of Nio validating a humanoid robot associated with Huawei’s HarmonyOS.

“Testing” or “validation” is the important qualification. The public reports do not establish the duration of the trial, the number of robots involved, the exact production task, the level of autonomy, or any improvement in cycle time, quality, uptime or labor cost. Neither Nio nor Huawei had, in the material available for this report, issued a clear joint announcement confirming a permanent Kuavo deployment.

Who made the robot?

Company Role in the story
Leju Robotics Developer of the physical Kuavo humanoid robot.
Huawei Provider or promoter of the HarmonyOS-connected software, AI and communications ecosystem associated with Kuavo.
Nio Electric-vehicle manufacturer and operator of the factories where the reported evaluation took place.
UBTech Separate robot supplier. Its Walker S was also tested at Nio and should not be confused with Kuavo.

Calling Kuavo simply “Huawei’s humanoid robot” collapses these roles. A more accurate description is Leju’s Kuavo humanoid robot using Huawei technology or a Huawei-linked humanoid robot. The July report does not prove that Huawei designed or manufactured Kuavo’s mechanical platform, owns Leju, or entered a formal robotics partnership with Nio.

What do HarmonyOS and Pangu mean here?

Huawei presented Kuavo at its 2024 developer conference as part of a broader HarmonyOS ecosystem, with reports also associating industrial use with Huawei’s Pangu large model. In practical terms, that can refer to several software layers:

  • device and operating-system integration;
  • communications and coordination between robot systems;
  • developer tools and connected-device services; and
  • AI capabilities or model access attributed to Pangu.

It does not automatically mean Huawei built the robot, owns the commercial product, controls Nio’s factory, or gave Kuavo human-level reasoning. Huawei’s conference material explains its HarmonyOS and Pangu ecosystem, while its manufacturing material describes a broader intelligent-factory strategy; neither source independently confirms every detail of the Nio-specific trial. See Huawei’s HDC 2024 announcement and its intelligent-factory overview.

What was Kuavo supposed to do at Nio?

The July report does not provide a confirmed task list for Kuavo. It is therefore not accurate to say that Kuavo assembled cars, inspected a particular component, or worked autonomously on a production line.

Nio had already described a wider humanoid-robot program. In April 2024, executive Yi Peng said Nio had formed an internal team in 2023 and was investigating robotic arms for confined spaces, multitasking supported by 5G and computer vision, and quality-control applications. Those comments describe Nio’s strategy, not necessarily Kuavo’s specific assignment. CnEVPost’s interview report provides that context.

Kuavo was not Nio’s first humanoid-robot experiment

Before the Kuavo report, Nio was shown working with UBTech’s Walker S. A February 2024 report described Walker S training at a Nio production line, calling it the first real-world training of that robot in a new-energy-vehicle factory. Later coverage linked Walker S demonstrations to checks involving door locks, seat belts, headlight covers and vehicle-logo placement. Those documented tasks belong to Walker S, not to Kuavo. See the Walker S report and the later Nio F2 summary.

This distinction matters because reports about several robots can make a demonstration by one supplier appear to be evidence about another supplier’s machine.

Why test a humanoid in a car factory?

Humanoid robots are attractive where a factory wants flexibility rather than one machine permanently assigned to one motion. A human-shaped platform could potentially:

  • move through spaces designed for people;
  • use existing tools, fixtures and workstations;
  • switch between inspection, handling, fastening or labeling tasks;
  • work alongside fixed robotic arms; and
  • enter confined areas without redesigning an entire line.

That flexibility is a hypothesis to validate, not proof that humanoids outperform conventional automation. Fixed industrial robots remain faster, more precise and easier to control for many repetitive, structured operations. A humanoid earns its place only if its adaptability offsets added mechanical, software, safety and maintenance complexity.

What counts as a real factory deployment?

The word “testing” can cover very different activities:

  1. Static demonstration: a scripted routine performed for visitors or cameras.
  2. Teleoperated trial: a human remotely controls or closely supervises the robot.
  3. Training run: the system gathers data or learns a task under controlled conditions.
  4. Pilot deployment: it repeats a defined job on a production line.
  5. Operational deployment: it meets safety, quality, uptime and cost targets in regular production.
  6. Mass deployment: multiple units are integrated at commercial scale.

The evidence available for Nio and Kuavo supports only the cautious language of testing, validation and experimentation. No published figures establish cycle time, defect reduction, uptime, labor savings, cost per task, trial length, safety incidents or the percentage of autonomous operation.

The technical hurdles are substantial

  • Maintaining balance and safe motion near people.
  • Manipulating objects that vary in position, weight and condition.
  • Keeping computer vision reliable despite changing light and occlusion.
  • Delivering low-latency, dependable communications.
  • Reducing dependence on remote operators and scripted routines.
  • Managing battery life, charging and maintenance downtime.
  • Meeting safety certification, cybersecurity and factory-data requirements.
  • Showing a lower total cost than specialized automation.

Huawei and Leju have specifically discussed networking constraints. In a Huawei interview, Leju CEO Chang Lin said one robot worked well over Wi-Fi, while operating several robots caused errors because of network limitations. The companies presented 5G-Advanced as a possible way to support larger groups and more reliable control. That discussion is not evidence of Nio’s exact network configuration. What happened after the Kuavo report?

Nio continued exploring robotics in manufacturing, including later reporting about quality-inspection work at F2. In June 2026, Nio said Factory Two joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network, citing a digital-twin platform, vehicle AI and automation of 90% of research-and-development workflows. That recognition describes broader intelligent-manufacturing capabilities; it does not show that Kuavo became a regular production worker. Nio’s announcement is available at NIO Factory Two Recognized as a Global Lighthouse Factory.

Nio CEO William Li has also been reported as seeing technology shared between electric vehicles and robotics while waiting for the robotics market to mature before making a major standalone move. That is consistent with an exploratory strategy, not an announced plan to build or purchase humanoids at scale. CnEVPost’s 2026 report covers those comments.

What the headline should have said

The clearest interpretation is: Nio reportedly evaluated Leju Robotics’ Kuavo humanoid robot at its factories, using technology associated with Huawei’s HarmonyOS and Pangu ecosystem. It was not established as a Huawei-manufactured robot, a fully autonomous production worker, or a mass-deployment program. The story is best understood as an early industrial-robotics validation exercise involving three distinct roles: Leju supplied the humanoid platform, Huawei supplied a software and AI ecosystem connection, and Nio provided the factory test environment.
