The short version: Nike’s 2026 national-team jerseys developed a visible raised or pointed bulge at the shoulder seam on some players. Nike acknowledged that the appearance was not acceptable but said performance was unaffected. The company’s reported remedy was to wash and steam the shirts—not redesign or replace them.
Calling the jerseys “AI-designed” is also too simplistic. Nike describes the process as computational design, while reporting indicates that AI elements were used alongside human designers. The most accurate description is AI-assisted or computationally designed jerseys with a visible shoulder-seam failure.
What went wrong with Nike’s jerseys?
The problem was a raised, pointed, or bunched section where the shoulder seam met the body of the shirt. On some players, the fabric appeared to project away from the body instead of lying flat.
The issue became particularly obvious on television and in match photography. Reported examples included Uruguay’s Federico Valverde during a friendly against England and France’s Kylian Mbappé. England and other Nike-sponsored national teams were also part of the broader discussion, but the available reporting does not establish that every team, size, or jersey was affected.
This appears to be a garment-construction or finishing problem involving the seam, knit geometry, or fabric behavior. There is no evidence that the cooling system itself failed.

The Guardian reported that Nike characterized the issue as minor and primarily aesthetic. That distinction matters: the evidence supports a visible product-quality problem, not a safety failure, athlete injury, or confirmed loss of performance.
Why are people calling them AI-designed?
Nike announced its 2026 federation kits on March 16, 2026, describing its Aero-FIT platform as the result of computational design, performance data, and stitch-specific knitting. Nike’s announcement does not say that an autonomous AI system designed or approved the jerseys.

So the story is not simply “AI failed.” The more defensible criticism is that a technologically ambitious product reached athletes with a visible real-world appearance problem.
What Aero-FIT was supposed to do
Nike marketed Aero-FIT as a performance-focused construction using open and closed mesh zones, lightweight stretch, and stitch-level knitting. Nike says its computational approach was designed to place ventilation where athletes need it and claims more than twice the airflow of legacy fabrics.

Those airflow and cooling figures are Nike’s marketing claims, not independent testing results established by the available reporting. Nike’s product pages also describe the authentic shirts as breathable and designed to help regulate body temperature, with product-specific wording referring to polyester or recycled polyester fibers.

The visible shoulder problem may therefore be separate from the jersey’s intended cooling performance. Nike said performance was unaffected, but that statement should remain attributed to Nike rather than treated as independently verified fact.
Nike’s official kit announcement contains the company’s description of Aero-FIT and its technical claims.
Nike’s response: wash and steam the shoulders
According to The Guardian’s June 11 report, Nike gave member federations instructions to wash the jerseys and steam the shoulder seams. The treatment reportedly made the bulge less noticeable during later friendlies.
That is a cosmetic mitigation, not a documented redesign. The shirts were reportedly left unchanged before the tournament. There is no publicly documented recall, corrected pattern, or replacement program in the available coverage.

Steaming can help fabric lie flatter, but it does not prove that the seam geometry has been corrected. The available reporting also does not establish how long the improvement lasts after repeated washing, sweating, wearing, and packing.
What buyers should do
Do not treat the reported workaround as a universal household repair manual. Follow the care label and the instructions supplied with the exact jersey. Nike product pages generally specify cold machine washing and low-temperature drying. High heat can damage synthetic fibers, lettering, badges, or bonded elements.
- Photograph the shoulder area as soon as the jersey arrives.
- Check the product’s sewn-in care label and the exact Nike product page.
- Wash cold with like colors.
- Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and high heat.
- Use steaming only when it is consistent with instructions from Nike, the federation, or the retailer.
- Contact the retailer if the shoulder remains visibly distorted or the garment does not match its advertised fit.
- Keep the receipt, tags, packaging, and customization details.
Nike’s US product page says eligible Nike Members generally receive free returns within 60 days, subject to exclusions. Customized shirts can have different return rules, so verify the current policy before ordering.

The main buying decision is whether official match authenticity is worth accepting more uncertainty about fit and appearance.

Authentic Match jersey

When checked, Nike’s France authentic home jersey showed a $175 list price and a $138.97 sale price, while the England authentic home shirt was listed at $175. Prices, promotions, sizes, and stock vary by country and can change.
How serious is the “disaster”?
“Disaster” is too strong if it means a safety or performance catastrophe. The available evidence does not establish injuries, reduced cooling, widespread returns, a financial loss, or a universal defect.
It is fairer to call this a product-validation and brand-execution failure. A football jersey is worn by elite athletes under intense visual scrutiny. A small seam irregularity that might escape notice in a sample can become immediately obvious when it appears on television across multiple players.
The controversy also exposes a broader risk with data-driven product design. If an optimization process prioritizes measurable variables such as airflow, weight, stretch, or production efficiency while underweighting drape, appearance, and fit across different bodies, the result can be technically ambitious but visibly unsatisfactory. That is an analysis of the episode—not a confirmed explanation from Nike.
Human designers and product managers remain responsible for final approval even when software assists with the design. The AI label does not transfer accountability to the tool.
The bottom line for buyers
Nike’s 2026 jerseys were not proven to be autonomously designed by AI, and the shoulder issue was not proven to be caused by AI. What is documented is a visible seam problem on some shirts, Nike’s acknowledgment that the appearance was unsatisfactory, and a wash-and-steam workaround that reportedly reduced—but did not necessarily eliminate—the bulge.
If you want the official Match jersey, buy from Nike or an authorized federation retailer, inspect the shoulders immediately, and confirm the return rules before adding a name or number. If appearance and easy everyday wear matter more than on-field authenticity, compare the Stadium version carefully rather than assuming it has identical construction.
