Short answer: Newegg briefly replied “Yeah, tariffs” when asked on social media about higher GeForce RTX 5080 prices in February 2025. The retailer also reportedly said its Blackwell GPUs came from China. Both posts were deleted, and neither constituted a detailed cost breakdown. Tariffs may have contributed, but launch scarcity, board-partner pricing, marketplace sellers and unusually strong demand also pushed RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 prices above NVIDIA’s announced starting prices.
The launch-price baseline
NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on January 6, 2025, with both cards scheduled to go on sale on January 30. The company’s U.S. starting prices were:

Those were starting prices, generally associated with an entry-level or Founders Edition design. They were not a promise that every ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI or other add-in-board model would sell for exactly $1,999 or $999. Premium coolers, factory overclocks, larger power systems, special finishes and bundled accessories can produce a higher legitimate manufacturer price.

What Newegg reportedly said
In early February 2025, after reports of RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 prices rising rapidly, a user asked Newegg on X whether RTX 5080 prices had increased. According to contemporary reporting by Tom’s Hardware, Newegg replied: “Yeah, tariffs.”
Coverage also reported a separate Newegg reply saying that its Blackwell GPUs came from China. The tariff-related response and the China-origin post were subsequently deleted. Newegg did not publish a public, model-by-model accounting showing the import value, tariff classification, duty rate or amount passed to buyers. HotHardware likewise described the episode as a brief social-media explanation rather than a formal pricing statement.
That distinction matters. A deleted reply is evidence that a Newegg account pointed to tariffs; it is not proof that tariffs caused every increase or that a specific percentage of any listing represented duty.

How much did prices rise?
Contemporary reports gave model-specific examples, not a universal RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 surcharge:

The Gigabyte example is calculated as ($1,479.99 − $1,299.99) ÷ $1,299.99, or approximately 13.8%. It should not be presented as a tariff rate for all cards. Other premium RTX 5090 models were already listed well above the $1,999 reference price because supply was extremely limited. For example, a documented $2,799.99 listing would be about 40.1% above $1,999, but that comparison combines a particular product listing with NVIDIA’s reference starting price; it does not isolate tariffs.
How tariffs could affect a graphics card’s price
A tariff is generally charged on imported goods at the border and paid by the importer of record. Depending on contracts and market conditions, the cost can be absorbed by an importer, manufacturer, distributor or retailer, or passed through in stages. Retail pricing can also reflect freight, insurance, foreign-exchange changes, inventory replacement cost, margin decisions and expectations about future policy.

That means a retailer could reprice existing stock because it expects replacement inventory to cost more, even if the particular unit already on the shelf entered the country before a new duty took effect. Such repricing is economically different from saying that the tariff had already been paid on that unit.
Newegg’s later SEC filing discusses tariff uncertainty and the possibility that tariffs could increase the cost of products and components in its supply chain. That supports tariffs as a genuine business risk. It does not reveal the duty paid on an individual RTX 5090 or RTX 5080, nor the share of any retail increase attributable to it.
Why tariffs were not the whole explanation
Severe launch scarcity
Both cards were difficult to find immediately after launch. When supply is tiny and demand is high, premium models and third-party sellers can command prices far above the manufacturer’s starting price without a tariff being responsible for the entire difference. Contemporary reporting described this shortage as a major feature of the launch.

Different board-partner products
“RTX 5090 price” can refer to a Founders Edition, a basic partner card, a flagship factory-overclocked model or a white edition with a more elaborate cooler. Comparing one of those with NVIDIA’s entry price can exaggerate the apparent increase. The exact SKU must be matched before calculating a change.
Marketplace sellers and intermediaries
Newegg lists products sold by Newegg as well as products offered by marketplace merchants. Distributor, retailer and marketplace margins can all appear in the final price. Seller, fulfillment method, warranty and stock position may explain why two cards from the same GPU family have very different prices. Check the GPU category and the “Sold by Newegg” filter rather than assuming every listing is Newegg inventory.

Demand and expectations
The RTX 5090 launched as NVIDIA’s flagship consumer GPU, while the RTX 5080 targeted high-end 4K gaming. Strong willingness to pay can lift prices independently of import duties. Retailers may also price around anticipated future costs, but that is an inference unless the retailer documents it directly.

What the deleted explanation does—and does not—establish
- Established by reporting: Newegg briefly replied “Yeah, tariffs” and reportedly linked its Blackwell supply to China.
- Also established: The relevant social posts were deleted, and launch pricing was affected by limited availability.
- Not established: A universal tariff percentage, the duty paid for each SKU, or the portion of any increase passed to consumers.
- Not established: That every RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 was made in China or entered the United States under identical customs conditions.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that Newegg formally confirmed “MSRP plus a tariff.” The strongest defensible wording is that Newegg cited tariffs as one possible reason during a short-lived social-media exchange.
How to evaluate a current RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 listing
- Match the exact SKU. Compare the same board-partner model, memory configuration and cooler—not merely “RTX 5090” or “RTX 5080.”
- Identify the seller. Confirm whether it is sold by Newegg, a manufacturer, NVIDIA or a third-party marketplace merchant.
- Check condition and warranty. New, open-box and refurbished cards have different risk profiles and return terms.
- Compare with the reference point. Use $1,999 and $999 as launch benchmarks, while recognizing that premium AIB cards may have higher intended pricing.
- Include the full cost. Account for shipping, sales tax, bundles and any required power-supply or cooling upgrades.
- Verify real availability. “Add to cart” does not guarantee stable stock or immediate dispatch.
- Consider alternatives. A prebuilt system, a previous-generation card, a lower-tier RTX model, an AMD card or a protected used-market purchase may offer better value than paying a large scarcity premium. Make that decision using dated prices and the workload you actually run.
2026 market context
Current listings show why a timestamp is essential. In an August 2026 Newegg snapshot, a Gigabyte RTX 5090 listing appeared at $3,899.99 and an MSI RTX 5080 listing at $1,695.99. Those are model-specific listings and may involve marketplace or partner sellers; they are not universal Newegg prices. Prices, seller identity, stock, shipping and tax can change quickly. Check the current RTX listings before drawing a comparison.
For a reference-price check, NVIDIA’s marketplace showed an RTX 5080 at $999 when crawled, but it was marked out of stock: NVIDIA Marketplace. A 2026 listing cannot retroactively prove why prices changed in February 2025. It only shows that availability and street pricing remained volatile.

Bottom line
Newegg did briefly point to tariffs when asked about RTX 5080 pricing, and the retailer reportedly said its Blackwell GPUs came from China. The posts were deleted, and no public documentation quantifies a tariff surcharge for individual cards. Tariffs were plausible supply-chain pressure, but scarcity, AIB product tiers, marketplace sellers, demand and intermediary margins were also central to the launch-price increases. Treat the episode as a dated, qualified explanation—not proof that tariffs alone caused every RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 price hike.
