“New Bing Maps Beta and More” refers to a Microsoft announcement published on December 2, 2009—not a current Bing Maps release. The announcement covered four product areas: a redesigned Bing Maps beta, experimental mapping applications called Twitter Maps and Local Lens, a Bing application for Windows Mobile, a Bing toolbar connected to Bing Cashback, and a social-network-focused Visual Search experience.
This is best understood as a snapshot of Microsoft’s 2009 effort to make Bing more visual, local, mobile, social, and commerce-oriented. The original announcement is summarized in contemporary coverage by Paul Thurrott.
The new Bing Maps beta
The central announcement was a beta version of a redesigned Bing Maps experience. Microsoft described it as combining conventional map exploration with richer visual material from two of its mapping and imaging technologies:

- Photosynth: photo-based imagery designed to add a more immersive visual dimension to map exploration.
The beta also emphasized interaction. As users changed views, zoom levels, or otherwise interacted with the map, the imagery was intended to change with the selected perspective. The broader idea was to move beyond static road maps and aerial views toward a more visual, exploratory mapping experience.

The surviving announcement does not provide a version number, coverage figures, image-resolution specifications, supported countries, browser requirements, or technical details about how Streetside and Photosynth imagery was processed. Those details should not be inferred from the launch description.
Twitter Maps and Local Lens
Microsoft also presented two experimental mapping applications alongside the main Maps beta.
Twitter Maps
Twitter Maps was described as a way to display real-time Twitter updates by geographic area. In practical terms, the concept connected map locations with contemporaneous social updates, allowing users to see what people were discussing in particular places.

It was an announced experimental application, not evidence of a permanent social-listening service or a modern geospatial analytics platform.

Local Lens
Local Lens focused on hyperlocal and neighborhood-level content. Its purpose was to make map exploration more useful at the scale of local communities rather than limiting it to streets, businesses, and broad geographic areas.
Microsoft did not specify the cities covered, the data providers, how frequently information was updated, or whether the material was editorial, algorithmic, user-generated, or commercial. Those unresolved details are important because “hyperlocal” describes the intended focus, not a documented guarantee about the service’s depth or accuracy.
The other Bing announcements
Bing for Windows Mobile
Microsoft announced a new Bing application for Windows Mobile, the mobile platform used at the time. Its highlighted capabilities included:
- Improved auto-locate functionality.
- Voice search.
The announcement said the application was available for download through discoverbing.com/mobile. That was a period-specific Windows Mobile destination; it should not be confused with a current Bing app for Android or iOS. The announcement does not identify supported handsets, Windows Mobile versions, pricing, or regional availability.

Bing toolbar and Bing Cashback
The announced Bing toolbar was primarily a shopping-related browser tool. It could flag online content and alert users when they were about to make a purchase that qualified for Bing Cashback savings.
That positioning matters: this was not described as a general-purpose security or productivity toolbar. It was an early attempt to connect search-related browser software with purchase incentives. Microsoft listed discoverbing.com/toolbar as the download destination at the time, but the historical link should not be treated as a current product page.
Social Visual Search
Microsoft also described a social-network-oriented Bing Visual Search experience that would integrate Facebook and Twitter feeds. The proposed experience was intended to help users:
- Find status updates from friends and followers.
- Sort results by upcoming birthdays.
- Perform related searches involving their social networks.
This feature was described as “coming soon,” so it should not be presented as fully available on December 2, 2009. The announcement also does not establish exactly how the integrations worked, what permissions were required, or whether the experience launched in the described form.

The announcement directed readers to several destinations:

These links are part of the announcement’s historical context. They may now redirect, be unavailable, or no longer represent Microsoft’s current product structure. They should not be presented as reliable instructions for accessing a live 2009 beta.

This distinction prevents a common historical error: treating every item in the announcement as though it had the same release status. Microsoft was describing a collection of launches, experiments, and upcoming features, not one unified product release.

The package showed how Microsoft was positioning Bing shortly after the brand’s 2009 launch. Bing was being presented as more than a conventional web search engine:

- The toolbar and Cashback connected search with online shopping.
- Social Visual Search aimed to bring friends’ and followers’ activity into search results.
The announcement was promotional rather than an independent review. It contains no hands-on performance testing, user research, competitive benchmarking, or evidence that the proposed features delivered measurable benefits. Claims about usefulness, accuracy, reliability, privacy, and adoption therefore go beyond what the source supports.
What happened afterward?
The December 2009 release should not be confused with later Bing Maps milestones. Contemporary reporting aggregated by Techmeme in January 2010 indicated that Bing Maps later moved beyond the beta label and that a Silverlight-based version became the default in the United States on a rolling basis.
That was a subsequent development, not part of the December 2 announcement. Likewise, modern descriptions of features such as dark mode, indoor maps, augmented reality, or historical imagery should not automatically be assigned to this 2009 beta. A later article may mention such capabilities, but it does not establish that they were included in the announcement covered here.

What the original announcement does not tell us
Readers researching the release should treat several questions as unresolved unless they consult additional period documentation:
- Whether the Maps beta was globally available or limited to selected markets.
- Whether it required Silverlight, a particular browser, or a Microsoft account.
- How much Streetside coverage existed at launch.
- How Twitter Maps selected, filtered, located, or moderated posts.
- Which sources powered Local Lens.
- Which Windows Mobile devices and operating-system builds supported the Bing app.
- Whether the toolbar worked across all major browsers.
- How Bing Cashback eligibility and tracking operated.
- Whether the planned social Visual Search experience launched as described.
- How long the experimental applications remained available.
Keeping these gaps visible is more accurate than filling them with assumptions based on modern mapping products or later Bing features.
