A Prime Video “network connection” error does not always mean your internet is completely down. The fastest diagnosis is to compare Prime Video on another device using the same Wi-Fi, then test the affected device on another network such as a phone hotspot.
If Prime Video works elsewhere, focus on the original device, app, HDMI connection, or home network. Start by closing the app, restarting the device and router, installing updates, and temporarily disabling VPNs or proxies.
First, identify the failure
Prime Video may report a connection problem when the device has no internet access, DNS resolution is failing, Wi-Fi is unstable, the app is outdated, authentication is failing, or a TV’s HDMI/HDCP connection is incompatible. Buffering, a black screen, a title that will not start, and a complete inability to open the app can have different causes.
Run this five-minute isolation test
- Try Prime Video on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- Connect the affected device temporarily to a phone hotspot and try again. Disconnect afterward to avoid unnecessary mobile-data use.
- Open another streaming service on the affected device.
- Try a different Prime Video title.
- Note whether one device or every device in the household is affected.

Do not claim that Amazon is experiencing an outage without checking a current official notice or reputable outage monitor. The comparison tests above are more useful than assuming the router is at fault.

Fix the connection and restart in the right order
1. Check the device’s internet connection
On the TV, Fire TV device, streaming box, console, phone, tablet, or computer, open Settings → Network or the equivalent menu. Confirm that the correct Wi-Fi network is selected, the password is correct, and the device reports internet access rather than merely a connection to the router. Menu names vary between Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other platforms. Amazon’s connected-device guidance recommends checking the device’s online status and Wi-Fi password first: Amazon’s network troubleshooting guidance.
2. Close Prime Video
Exit the title and close Prime Video completely. On a computer, close and reopen the browser. If the platform supports force-closing apps, use that option. Sign out and back in only if ordinary closure does not help.
3. Fully restart the streaming device
Turn off or unplug the device rather than using only the remote’s standby button. Wait at least 60 seconds, reconnect it, and test Prime Video again. Amazon recommends this power cycle for playback problems.

4. Restart the modem and router
- Close Prime Video.
- Unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first if the devices are separate.
- Wait for its status lights to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi-Fi to return.
- Restart the streaming device and test again.
This can clear a temporary routing or connection fault, but a successful restart does not prove that the underlying problem is fixed.
Reduce congestion and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Temporarily pause game downloads and updates, cloud backups, video calls, large file transfers, other 4K streams, torrents, and security-camera uploads. Amazon specifically recommends pausing other internet activity when several devices are using the connection.

Advertised download speed is not the whole story. Weak signal, interference, packet loss, router overload, upload-related bufferbloat, and ISP congestion can all cause buffering even when a speed test shows a high number.
If the streaming device has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router for a temporary test. If Ethernet is stable while Wi-Fi fails, investigate signal strength, interference, mesh-node placement, or router configuration. Ethernet will not fix DNS, account, app, ISP, or Prime Video service problems.

If your router offers both bands, compare them without changing other advanced settings:
- 5 GHz: often faster at short range, but less effective through walls.
- 2.4 GHz: generally reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, but may be more congested.
For mesh Wi-Fi, test the device near the main router. A TV may be attached to a distant node or roaming poorly.
Check VPNs, proxies, DNS, and filtered networks
Temporarily disable VPN applications, browser proxies, router-level VPNs, ad-blocking DNS, parental-control filters, and other network filtering. Amazon recommends disabling VPNs and proxies while troubleshooting; this is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every VPN is prohibited in every situation.

If Prime Video works on a hotspot or another network but not your home connection, contact your ISP. Amazon specifically says to ask whether DNS traffic on port 53 is being blocked. Do not open arbitrary firewall ports or change router security rules without a specific diagnosis. Changing DNS providers may help a genuine resolution problem, but it will not repair weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, ISP congestion, or an HDMI fault.
Hotel, dormitory, office, and public Wi-Fi can require browser-based sign-in, device registration, or network approval. Captive portals, blocked DNS, client isolation, and bandwidth limits can prevent Prime Video from working even when the device appears connected.
Update Prime Video and the device
Install available updates for:
- The Prime Video app.
- The TV, Fire TV device, streaming box, or game console operating system.
- Your phone or tablet operating system.
- Your desktop browser.
- Router firmware, if recommended by its manufacturer.
Outdated software can cause connection, playback, authentication, and compatibility failures. Amazon notes that device compatibility requirements can change and that an older device may eventually stop being compatible: Prime Video device compatibility information.
Clear the app cache or reinstall Prime Video
- Force-stop Prime Video.
- Clear its cache if the platform provides that option.
- Reopen the app and test.
- Clear app data only if you understand that it may sign you out and remove local settings.
- Uninstall and reinstall Prime Video if supported.
Common paths include Fire TV: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Prime Video and Android/Google TV: Settings → Apps → Prime Video → Storage and cache. Exact labels vary by Fire OS, Android TV, and manufacturer. iPhone and iPad do not provide a universal cache-clearing control, so deleting and reinstalling the app is often the practical equivalent. Smart TVs may require a cold restart or app reinstall instead.
Set the date and time automatically
Open the device’s date and time settings and enable automatic date and time. An incorrect clock can interfere with authentication and secure connections, causing a streaming app to fail even though the network itself works.

Check simultaneous streaming and account issues
Multiple devices can affect Prime Video in two separate ways: they may consume household bandwidth, or they may hit an account or title playback limit. Amazon’s referenced troubleshooting guidance says the same title can be streamed on two devices at a time, but limits can vary by region, account arrangement, content type, add-on channel, or external provider. Check the applicable Amazon terms rather than treating this as a universal rule.
Stop playback on other devices, then try the title again. If the error is 2063, do not automatically diagnose a network failure. Amazon’s dedicated guidance directs users to verify payment details: Amazon’s Error 2063 help.

If Prime Video opens but playback produces a black screen, an error, or no picture, inspect the display chain:
- Reseat the HDMI cable.
- Try another HDMI port and, if available, another cable.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV.
- Temporarily remove an AV receiver, HDMI splitter, capture device, or switch.
- Check that the TV and streaming device support the required HD, UHD, HDR, or Dolby Vision format.
Amazon cites HDCP 1.4 for HD and HDCP 2.2 for UHD and/or HDR. Every device and intermediary in the HDMI chain must support the required protection level. A black screen or playback rejection can therefore be a display-compatibility problem, not an internet problem.

Prime Video error codes
Amazon’s playback troubleshooting page currently lists codes including 1007, 1022, 5001, 7003, 7005, 7031, 7135, 7202, 7203, 7204, 7206, 7207, 7230, 7250, 7251, 7301, 7303, 7305, 7306, 8020, 9003, and 9074. The exact code matters, but not every code has a separately documented public fix.

Write down the code, device model, app or browser version, connection type, time of failure, and results of the Wi-Fi, hotspot, and other-device tests. Then use Amazon’s current Prime Video playback troubleshooting page for code-specific guidance. Avoid relying on lists of supposed code meanings that do not come from Amazon.
Optional diagnostics for advanced users
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
nslookup primevideo.com
ping primevideo.comipconfig /flushdns clears the local DNS cache and nslookup tests DNS resolution. ping is not a definitive streaming test because a service may block or deprioritize ICMP while still working normally.
On macOS, these commands may help:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
nslookup primevideo.com
ping primevideo.comDNS-flush commands vary across macOS versions and are not a universal Prime Video fix. Stop if you are unsure about a command or do not have administrator access.

Amazon lists minimum download guidance of 1 Mb/s for SD and 5 Mb/s for HD live streams. These are minimum thresholds, not guarantees of stable playback for every Prime Video format or household. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, device limits, and simultaneous usage can still cause buffering: Amazon’s live-stream bandwidth guidance.
When to contact your ISP or Amazon
Contact your ISP when Prime Video works on a hotspot or another network but consistently fails at home, especially after restarting the equipment and disabling filtering. Ask about outages, maintenance, routing problems, and DNS traffic on port 53.
Contact Amazon when Prime Video fails only after testing another network and another device, when a persistent error code remains, or when the problem affects a specific account, title, purchase, rental, or add-on provider. Provide your test results instead of simply reporting “the internet is broken.”
Factory reset is the last resort
Do not factory-reset a TV or streaming device at the beginning. Amazon presents it as a final step because it removes account information, settings, and downloaded app content. Try the network comparison, updates, app restart, cache cleanup, reinstall, and HDMI checks first. If a factory reset does not help, an obsolete or unsupported device may be the issue—but confirm this by testing a current device before buying replacement hardware.
