Verdict: The Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro (MR6550) remains an unusually capable portable 5G hotspot, but it is no longer an easy recommendation. Its removable battery, 5G mmWave support, two TS9 antenna ports and 2.5Gbps Ethernet port are genuinely useful. However, Wi‑Fi 6E works only indoors on wall power, advertised speeds are theoretical, and Netgear’s newer M7 makes the M6 Pro difficult to justify at anything close to its original $999 MSRP.
Buy the M6 Pro in 2026 only if you specifically need its North American MR6550 radio configuration, mmWave, wired 2.5GbE, removable battery or external-antenna support. For ordinary travel Wi‑Fi, a cheaper hotspot may be the better choice.
What the M6 Pro actually is
The Nighthawk M6 Pro is a battery-powered 5G mobile hotspot and cellular gateway, not a conventional cable, fiber or mesh router. It accepts a compatible physical SIM, connects to a carrier’s 4G LTE or 5G network, and shares that connection over Wi‑Fi or its wired Ethernet port.

Design and hardware
The M6 Pro is compact enough for a bag but substantially more capable than a phone hotspot. Its touchscreen can display connection information and allows basic setup and management without depending entirely on a mobile app. The removable battery is valuable for long trips, replacement after battery wear and stationary operation with the battery removed.
The standout hardware is on the sides: a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port and two TS9 antenna connectors. Ethernet lets you connect a laptop, switch or separate wireless router without adding a USB adapter. The TS9 ports can help in marginal-signal locations when paired with suitable, correctly configured cellular antennas, although connectors alone do not guarantee better performance. Cable loss, antenna placement and MIMO configuration all matter.
The device is not designed to replace a full mesh system. Netgear’s “up to 2,000 square feet” coverage figure applies to specified wall-powered conditions and should not be compared directly with a mesh system’s coverage rating.

5G performance and carrier compatibility
The MR6550 supports a broad North American band set, including Sub‑6 bands n2, n5, n7, n12, n14, n25, n29, n30, n38, n41, n48, n66, n71, n77 and n78, plus mmWave n260 and n261. Netgear identifies the model as certified for AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon.
That does not mean every SIM or plan will work. Before buying, confirm all of the following:
- The exact device is the North American MR6550, not an MR6500 or MR6450.
- Your carrier accepts the device’s IMEI.
- Your plan permits use in a dedicated hotspot or router.
- The plan has enough high-speed hotspot data and does not impose an unsuitable cap or deprioritization policy.
- Your local network uses supported bands.
- The carrier can provide the correct APN if required.
“Unlocked” describes the hardware; it is not a promise of universal activation. Carrier database restrictions, phone-only SIM policies, incorrect APNs and regional mismatches can all prevent service. Consult Netgear’s carrier compatibility guidance, then confirm acceptance with the carrier before purchasing used equipment.
What mmWave adds
mmWave can deliver extremely high throughput near a compatible small cell, but it has short range and is easily affected by walls, foliage, vehicles, device placement, congestion and the carrier plan. Netgear’s reference to speeds of up to 8Gbps describes modem capability under unusually favorable conditions, not normal internet performance.
In most locations, Sub‑6 coverage and the carrier’s capacity will matter far more than mmWave support. The M6 Pro’s mmWave radio is a reason to choose this model only if your location and plan can actually use it.

Wi‑Fi 6E: useful, with a major limitation
Wi‑Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band, which can be cleaner and less congested than 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Compatible laptops and phones can get a fast, low-interference local link to the hotspot, particularly at short range.
But the feature is easy to misunderstand. Netgear states that 6GHz operation is restricted to indoor use and requires the power adapter. In ordinary battery-powered portable use, the M6 Pro does not provide the headline 6GHz experience. Six-gigahertz signals also have shorter range and weaker wall penetration than lower bands.
Wi‑Fi 6E improves the connection between your device and the M6 Pro; it does not bypass cellular congestion, a plan speed cap or a weak 5G signal. The AXE3600 and 3.6Gbps figures are aggregate maximum PHY rates, not expected internet throughput.
Battery and wall-powered operation
Netgear rates the removable 5,040mAh battery for up to 13 hours, but actual runtime depends on signal strength, 5G mode, client count, screen activity, Wi‑Fi settings, traffic load, temperature and battery age. Heavy downloads in a weak-signal area can reduce runtime substantially.
The M6 Pro is effectively two products:
- Portable hotspot: battery-powered and convenient, but without 6GHz Wi‑Fi under Netgear’s stated operating restriction.
- Plugged-in gateway: better suited to home, office or failover use, with 6GHz available and Netgear’s larger coverage estimate under specified conditions.
Netgear’s Plugged-In profile requires removing the battery. That is useful for a semi-permanent installation and avoids leaving the battery continuously exposed to charging heat, but it reduces the device’s convenience as an instant travel hotspot.

Ethernet, antennas and failover
The integrated 2.5Gbps Ethernet port is one of the M6 Pro’s strongest reasons to exist. It can feed a wired computer, switch or separate Wi‑Fi router and avoids making the cellular connection share a wireless link with the client being tested.
It can also act as a cellular backup, but buyers should not confuse that with enterprise-grade multi-WAN hardware. Advanced VPN, VLAN, policy-routing and automatic failover behavior must be verified for the exact firmware and the upstream router. Netgear’s marketing supports home and business continuity use, but it does not establish every advanced routing feature.
The two TS9 ports may improve reception with an appropriate external antenna in a weak-signal location. They will not automatically improve mmWave performance, and an unsuitable antenna or long cable can make results worse.
Setup and troubleshooting
Initial setup consists of inserting a compatible physical SIM, powering on the hotspot, following the touchscreen prompts, setting the Wi‑Fi name and password, and creating an administrator password. The touchscreen can also expose connection and data-use information. Exact labels may vary with firmware and region; use the current M6/M6 Pro user manual for the current interface.

- No service or failed activation: verify IMEI acceptance, plan eligibility, SIM status and APN settings with the carrier.
- Connected only to LTE: check local 5G coverage, supported bands, plan eligibility and signal placement before blaming the modem.
- 6GHz is missing: connect the power adapter, use the device indoors and confirm that the client supports Wi‑Fi 6E.
- Ethernet has no traffic: check the cable, link negotiation, router WAN settings and the hotspot’s current operating mode.
- Unexpectedly low speeds: compare the same SIM at the same location, then separate cellular, Wi‑Fi and Ethernet results.
- Persistent configuration problems: save any required settings, then use the manual’s factory-reset procedure and reconfigure the device.
How to evaluate performance properly
A single speed test cannot establish what the M6 Pro can do. A meaningful evaluation should record the carrier, location, firmware version, signal conditions and client device, then test:

- Download, upload, latency and sustained transfers.
- Multiple clients at once.
- Different distances and walls.
- Weak-signal and congested conditions.
- External antennas, when a compatible pair is available.
Comparing the same SIM in a modern phone at the same location is especially useful. It helps distinguish carrier limitations from hotspot, Wi‑Fi or client-device limitations.
Value in 2026
The M6 Pro launched in North America at a $999 MSRP in May 2023. That price reflected its early combination of Wi‑Fi 6E, mmWave and premium portable hardware. It should not be treated as the current street price; availability, used pricing and warranty status vary.
The value equation has changed because Netgear’s current U.S. site lists the newer M7 at $499.99. The M7 brings Wi‑Fi 7, physical SIM and an eSIM marketplace, but the M6 Pro remains the more relevant choice for buyers who specifically need mmWave, a removable battery, the MR6550’s radio configuration or integrated 2.5GbE. Verify the M7’s current ports and radio capabilities before treating it as a direct feature replacement.

Alternatives
- Netgear Nighthawk M7: the default Netgear comparison for 2026 and potentially better value for general travel, especially if Wi‑Fi 7 or eSIM flexibility matters. It is not automatically a substitute for the M6 Pro’s mmWave or wired-port requirements.

Who should buy the M6 Pro?
Buy it if:
- You need 5G mmWave and live or work where it is actually deployed.
- You need a removable battery for travel, field work or replacement.
- You need an integrated 2.5Gbps wired connection in a portable device.
- You need TS9 ports for a marginal-signal installation.
- You find a substantially discounted, new authorized unit with warranty.
Skip it if:
- You mainly need ordinary hotel or travel Wi‑Fi.
- Your carrier signal is weak or your plan restricts hotspot data.
- You are buying it mainly for Wi‑Fi 6E while operating on battery.
- You need enterprise-grade VPN, VLAN or multi-WAN controls.
- Its price approaches or exceeds the current M7.
- A fixed 5G gateway would provide better antennas and placement for your home.
Final verdict
The Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro is still technically impressive: the X65 modem, mmWave, Wi‑Fi 6E, removable battery, TS9 ports and 2.5GbE make it more flexible than most portable hotspots. Its weaknesses are practical rather than fundamental. Wi‑Fi 6E disappears in battery mode, cellular performance depends heavily on the carrier and location, and its original premium positioning has been overtaken by newer hardware.
In 2026, the M6 Pro is a specialist purchase, not the default premium hotspot. Choose it when its unique hardware solves a specific problem and the price is clearly below its launch positioning. Otherwise, compare the M7, a fixed 5G gateway or a cheaper travel hotspot—and validate the carrier plan before buying.
