If Netflix won’t load, first check whether the problem follows the network or is limited to one device. Try another app on the same device, then try Netflix on another device using the same Wi-Fi. If other apps work but Netflix fails everywhere, a Netflix, account, DNS, or ISP-routing issue is more likely than a fault with one app. If Netflix works elsewhere, focus on the device, app, or browser that fails.

Find out what is failing before changing settings

Run these checks in order; they help avoid reinstalling or resetting a device unnecessarily.

  1. Open another website or streaming app on the device where Netflix is stuck.
  2. Try Netflix on a second device connected to the same Wi-Fi.
  3. If possible, try Netflix using cellular data or another internet connection.
  4. Visit Fast.com and let the Netflix connection test finish. Netflix recommends it for testing a connection to its service; a successful result does not rule out every account, app, DNS, or device problem. See Netflix’s connection troubleshooting.
  • Other apps also fail: troubleshoot the internet connection first.
  • Netflix works on another device on the same Wi-Fi: focus on the failing device, its Netflix app, software, or network settings.
  • Netflix works on cellular but not Wi-Fi: investigate router settings, DNS, ISP routing, parental controls, or network restrictions.
  • Netflix fails on every device while other internet services work: avoid repeatedly resetting devices. A service, account, DNS, or ISP-routing issue is possible; check Netflix’s error guidance and contact Netflix support if it continues.

These checks cannot confirm a live Netflix outage. Netflix’s help pages describe troubleshooting but do not establish current service status. Its guidance for messages such as “Netflix is Currently Unavailable” and other connection errors includes cases where a temporary service or account problem may require support.

Try the least disruptive fixes first

  1. Force-close Netflix, then open it again.
  2. Restart the device completely rather than leaving it in sleep or standby. Turn it off, unplug it if practical, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. If Netflix still fails, restart the modem and router: turn off the streaming device, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait about one minute or until their connection lights stabilize. Then restart the streaming device. Some equipment takes longer to reconnect. Netflix gives this sequence in its TV and streaming-device instructions.
  4. Test another app, then Netflix on another device or in a browser. This separates a network-wide problem from an app or device problem.
  5. Install available Netflix app, browser, and device operating-system updates.
  6. Temporarily turn off VPNs, proxies, and custom DNS or proxy settings.
  7. Sign out of Netflix and sign back in. If a browser is involved, clear only Netflix cookies before clearing all browser data.
  8. Reinstall the app or clear its data only after the earlier steps fail. These actions can sign you out and remove downloads.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  1. Fully restart the TV or streaming device using the power-cycle steps above.
  2. Restart the modem and router using the timed sequence above.
  3. Check whether another app works on the TV. If it does not, use the TV’s network settings or built-in connection test before troubleshooting Netflix.
  4. Update the Netflix app and the TV or streaming device software. Sign out and back in, or reinstall Netflix if the device allows it.
  5. If Netflix is missing from the device’s app store or cannot be updated, check Netflix’s supported TV and streaming-device information. Netflix says some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support the service; that does not mean every older device is unsupported.

Do not start with a factory reset. It can erase Wi-Fi credentials, saved settings, apps, and login details. Use it only as a last resort and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Netflix specifically warns in an Apple TV troubleshooting path that a reset can erase settings, login data, and Wi-Fi information. If the TV connects to the internet and other apps work but Netflix still does not, contact the device maker if an app or firmware issue appears likely.

If Netflix won’t load on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Force-close Netflix and restart the device.
  2. Open Safari and visit Netflix; also test the connection at Fast.com.
  3. Update Netflix in the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
  4. Sign out of Netflix and sign back in.
  5. If the app still fails, delete and reinstall it. Downloaded titles may need to be downloaded again.

Netflix’s current app guidance and browser requirements are listed on its pages for supported browsers and operating systems and iPhone and iPad viewing. Netflix lists iPadOS 14 or later and Safari 14 or later for browser viewing; app compatibility depends on the supported software and current app.

If Netflix won’t load on Android

  1. Restart the phone or tablet, then test Fast.com in a browser.
  2. Update Netflix through Google Play or the device’s applicable app store, and install available Android updates.
  3. Sign out and back in if Netflix opens far enough to reach account settings.
  4. If the problem remains, clear Netflix app data in the device’s app settings. This signs you out and removes downloaded shows and movies.
  5. Reinstall Netflix if clearing data does not help.

Netflix says the latest app version requires Android 9 or later; older app versions may work on Android 5 through Android 8. Requirements can change, so check Netflix’s Android app requirements. Rooted devices, modified operating systems, or devices that fail Android certification may not install or run Netflix correctly; restoring manufacturer software or using a supported device may be necessary.

If Netflix won’t load in a browser

A blank page, frozen sign-in screen, or repeated redirect can come from stale Netflix cookies, extensions, blocked cookies or JavaScript, an unsupported browser, VPN or proxy routing, incorrect device time, or DNS and ISP-routing issues.

  1. Open a private or incognito window and visit Netflix. If it works there, an extension or stored browser data is a likely factor.
  2. Try a different supported browser. Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and VPN extensions.
  3. Clear Netflix cookies at netflix.com/clearcookies, then sign in again. This signs you out of Netflix, but avoids clearing cookies for every site.
  4. Restart the browser and computer; check that the computer’s date and time are correct.
  5. Update the browser and operating system. Netflix’s browser and operating-system requirements list the following minimum browser versions in its support documentation:
Platform Browser Minimum version listed
Windows Edge 118
Windows Chrome 117

Windows Opera 92
macOS Safari 14
macOS Chrome 117

macOS Firefox 111
macOS Opera 92
Chromebook Chrome 117

Netflix lists Windows 10 or 11 for browser playback on Windows, macOS 10.15.5 or later for Mac, ChromeOS 76 or later for Chromebook, and iPadOS 14 or later for iPad browser viewing. Linux works only on some configurations, and Netflix says it cannot guarantee compatibility or provide normal troubleshooting support for every Linux setup. These requirements can change.

If Netflix says the browser is unsupported or no longer supported, update it or switch to a supported browser and operating system. Netflix ended Silverlight support on September 13, 2023; see its pages on unsupported browsers and browser support errors.

Fix VPN, proxy, DNS, or location errors

A VPN or proxy can make the connection appear to come from somewhere other than your physical location. Netflix may show “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” or error code E106. VPN features can also be built into antivirus software, browser extensions, or a router; privacy DNS settings can cause similar location problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off any VPN app and check antivirus software for an automatically enabled VPN.
  2. Disable browser VPN or proxy extensions.
  3. Temporarily restore the device or router’s usual DNS and proxy settings, then restart Netflix.
  4. Open Fast.com, choose “Show more info,” and compare the displayed country and IP address with your actual connection. If they do not match, Netflix says your ISP may need to correct a DNS or location mismatch.

Follow Netflix’s VPN and proxy troubleshooting if the message continues. School, work, hotel, café, and other public networks may block streaming. Hotspots, cellular networks, satellite connections, and congested networks can also be unstable or restricted; Netflix discusses these possibilities in its network error guidance.

Use the error message to narrow the cause

Check whether the device and plan are compatible

A device can connect to the internet yet fail to run a current Netflix app or a particular plan’s experience. Netflix says some otherwise compatible devices cannot run its ad-supported experience because their software or app cannot be updated to support it. Netflix’s plan and device compatibility guidance says ad-supported plans require Android 7 or later on Android devices and iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later on iPhone and iPad; they are unavailable on VR headsets, and some older TV-connected devices may not support them. These are plan-specific requirements and can change. If Netflix works on another device but not the one you are using, confirm both device support and plan compatibility before replacing hardware or changing plans.

For Windows 4K playback, Netflix lists a steady connection of 15 Mbps or higher for supported configurations, alongside compatible software, browser, plan, and hardware requirements. This is a 4K playback requirement, not a universal minimum for Netflix to load or stream at ordinary quality. See Netflix’s Windows playback requirements.

Know who to contact if the checks do not solve it

  • Contact Netflix when other services work, Netflix fails across devices or gives an account- or Netflix-specific error, and device and network checks have not helped. Include the exact error message or code.
  • Contact your ISP when multiple devices cannot reach services, Fast.com fails, Netflix’s displayed location or IP is wrong, or the issue appears limited to your home connection.
  • Contact the device manufacturer when the TV or streaming device has a general connection, firmware, or app-installation problem, or its software can no longer be updated.

Before contacting support, note the device model, whether you use the app or browser, the exact error, whether other apps work, whether Netflix works on another device, whether a VPN or proxy is enabled, and whether the failure occurs on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular.
