Netflix’s official status page currently reports that Netflix is up. That does not rule out a regional, device-specific, account, or network problem. Check Netflix’s service-status page, then test another device or connection before treating the problem as a widespread outage.

Is Netflix down right now?

As of August 18, 2026, Netflix’s official status page says “Netflix is up” and reports no current interruption to its streaming service. The page is the best first check, but an overall “up” status cannot confirm that every region, internet provider, device, or Netflix feature is working normally.

Netflix is not a single server: a failure can involve sign-in, playback, content delivery, a particular device app, or the network route between your home and Netflix. Third-party outage trackers such as StatusGator and Downdetector can show whether other users are reporting problems, but user reports do not establish the cause or prove a Netflix-wide outage.

Run this two-minute check

  1. Check Netflix’s official status. If Netflix lists an interruption, wait for its update rather than resetting your equipment.
  2. Try another device on the same network. If a phone works but the TV does not, focus on the TV app or its connection.
  3. Try a different title. If only one show or film fails, the issue may be title-specific rather than a general service outage.
  4. Switch networks. Try cellular data or another Wi-Fi network. If Netflix works there but not at home, investigate the home network or ISP.
  5. Check your connection with Fast.com. Netflix operates Fast.com and recommends it to test speed and connectivity directly to Netflix.
  6. Keep the exact error code or message. Search it in Netflix’s troubleshooting hub instead of relying on a guessed meaning.

Use this pattern to narrow down the likely cause:

What you observe More likely area to check
Netflix fails on several devices and more than one network A Netflix-side or regional service problem
Netflix fails on every device on one home connection Router, ISP, DNS, firewall, parental controls, or another network setting
Netflix fails on one TV but works on a phone using the same Wi-Fi TV app, device software, or TV network connection
The website works but the app does not App data, app version, or device software
Other websites and services also fail Home internet or ISP connection
Netflix works without a VPN but not with one VPN routing or location detection
Browsing works but sign-in does not Account credentials, authentication, or account status

Fix Netflix in order, from simplest to strongest

1. Restart Netflix and try again

Close the app or browser tab completely, open Netflix again, and try a different title. If the app is frozen or endlessly loading, a full close and relaunch can clear a temporary device-state problem. Netflix notes that freezing and endless loading can result from device data needing a refresh or a network issue: Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

2. Restart the device

Power the TV, phone, streaming player, or computer fully off, then turn it back on and retry Netflix. On a smart TV, Netflix’s guidance is to unplug the device, press its power button once, wait one minute or leave it unplugged for three minutes, reconnect it, and try again. Do not jump to a factory reset; that can erase settings, apps, and saved network details.

3. Restart the modem and router

  1. Turn off the device that cannot play Netflix.
  2. Unplug the modem and router.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then plug both back in.
  4. Wait about one minute for the connection to return; some equipment takes longer.
  5. Turn the device back on and test Netflix.

This is Netflix’s documented network restart sequence: Netflix Help.

4. Temporarily remove connection complications

If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off temporarily and retry. If Netflix then works, the altered routing or detected location is likely involved; switching VPN servers is not a guaranteed fix, and this is not a reason to bypass regional licensing controls. If you changed DNS or modem settings, restore the default or automatic settings rather than substituting an unverified public DNS service. Netflix identifies VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, and other modem settings as possible sources of connection trouble.

5. Update, then sign out and back in

Install available Netflix app and device software updates. If the app opens but remains stuck or sign-in seems stale, sign out, restart the app, and sign in again. Make sure you have the account credentials before clearing app data or reinstalling.

6. Clear data or reinstall only if the problem is isolated

If Netflix works on other devices but not one app, clearing that app’s data or reinstalling it may help. This can require signing in again. If the same device has wider network or software problems, address those first; reinstalling Netflix will not repair a failing internet connection.

Device-specific steps

Smart TVs

  • Power-cycle the TV using the unplug-and-wait procedure above.
  • In Netflix, look for Get Help > Sign out. Menu labels and placement vary by TV model and app version.
  • If available, select More Details, then Sign out or Reset.
  • Update the TV firmware and Netflix app, then test another device to see whether the issue is TV-only.

If normal sign-out controls are unavailable, Netflix documents this remote sequence as a fallback: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. A recovery menu may offer Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate; available options vary by device. Use it only after simpler steps.

Fire TV, Roku, and other streaming players

  • Fully power off the player rather than leaving it in standby. If it has a power cable, unplug it for at least 15 seconds before restarting.
  • Restart the modem and router using the sequence above.
  • If you changed VPN, proxy, DNS, or modem connection settings, restore defaults and retry Netflix.
  • Update the player and app if available. Avoid resetting the whole player unless the problem is isolated to it and other steps have failed.

Apple TV

Force-close Netflix, reopen it, and restart Apple TV. Check for app and tvOS updates, then restart the home network if other apps or devices also have trouble. Sign out or reinstall Netflix only if these steps fail. Exact controls vary by tvOS version, so use the options shown on your device rather than relying on one fixed menu path.

Android phones and tablets

  • Turn the device fully off and back on.
  • Restart the modem and router if other devices on the same Wi-Fi are affected.
  • Move closer to the router or test cellular data to distinguish weak Wi-Fi from an app problem.
  • Update Netflix and Android. Clear app data or reinstall only if you can sign in again afterward.

iPhone and iPad

Force-close Netflix, restart the device, and install available Netflix and iOS/iPadOS updates. Test another network, then sign out and back in if the app opens. Reinstall only if simpler steps fail; menu labels can vary by operating-system version.

  • Clear Netflix site data or browser cache, or test with another supported browser.
  • Restart the computer and test the connection at Fast.com.

Netflix’s troubleshooting hub also lets you look up problems by error or symptom.

PlayStation and Xbox

  • Confirm the console is online and try another online service.
  • Restart the console and check that its date and time are correct.
  • If DNS was manually changed, return it to automatic before testing.
  • Update or reinstall Netflix only after basic connection checks.

School, hotel, café, office, and other managed networks may block streaming services. A cellular hotspot or satellite connection may also be too slow or unstable for reliable playback; test another network where permitted before changing console settings.

What the symptom can tell you

The app will not open or keeps loading

Restart the app and device, then compare with Netflix on another device and network. A loading screen alone does not establish a Netflix outage: the app may need a data refresh, or the connection may not be reaching Netflix.

Netflix opens, but playback buffers or stops

Test Fast.com, try a different title, and check whether other devices share the problem. Buffering can come from unstable or restricted connectivity even when Netflix’s overall service is operating.

Black screen, missing audio, or one title failing

Try another title and another device. If only one title fails, do not treat that as proof that Netflix is down. If the symptom is limited to one device, update and restart it before considering app reinstallation.

Sign-in fails or Netflix shows an account message

A sign-in failure can be separate from streaming availability. Check the exact message and account status; Netflix’s status page directs users to sign in to review account information. Persistent password, payment, subscription, or account-access prompts should be handled through Netflix support, not by repeatedly resetting the router.

A VPN or proxy message appears

Disable the VPN or proxy temporarily and retry Netflix. If that changes the result, the connection route is implicated. Do not infer a universal fix from a particular VPN server or change DNS settings without a clear reason.

When to wait, and when to contact support

Wait and monitor Netflix’s status page when an incident is listed or when the same failure occurs on several devices and more than one network while other services work. A status page may not show every partial or regional issue immediately, so the cross-device and cross-network tests still matter. Do not expect a restoration time unless Netflix provides one.

Contact Netflix through its Help Center if the status page is clear but the same problem persists for hours, if one account fails across multiple devices, or if an account or billing message remains. Contact your ISP when Netflix works elsewhere but repeatedly fails on your home connection, or when other services show connection problems. Contact the device maker if Netflix works on other devices and the failing device has broader software or hardware trouble.
