Netflix launched paid account sharing in the United States on May 23, 2023. The policy is still active in 2026: one account is intended for people who live in the same Netflix Household. Someone who lives elsewhere must use a separate account or be added as a paid extra member when the plan, billing arrangement, country and available slots qualify.
Netflix’s US Help Center prices, checked August 18, 2026, list extra-member access at $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads. Those charges are paid by the account owner and are in addition to the main plan price.

What Netflix actually launched
Netflix did not create an unlimited family plan for friends and relatives in different homes. It introduced a controlled extra-member system and tools for moving people outside the household to their own login.

On May 23, 2023, it began notifying US members whose accounts were being used outside their household and offered two legitimate paths: create a separate account or add an eligible person as an extra member.

The current policy is therefore not a new 2026 launch. It is an ongoing restriction on cross-household sharing. Netflix still permits account use by people who live together.

What counts as a Netflix Household?
Netflix defines a Household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. The practical test is residence, not family relationship or possession of the password.
- Relatives who live at the same address can generally use one account.
- Roommates can fit the household model even when they are not related.
- A sibling, partner or adult child who maintains another residence is not automatically part of the household.
- Having a profile on the account does not authorize use from a separate home.
Household members may watch while traveling or on holiday. Occasional travel is different from a person who lives elsewhere and routinely uses the account. Netflix’s public guidance does not promise one universal verification interval for every device, account or trip.

The following prices and limits are those listed by Netflix on August 18, 2026. Taxes, later price changes and partner billing can change the final amount.

Netflix’s plan details are at its Help Center plan page. An extra member is not another ordinary profile: they receive their own login and password, and the account owner remains financially responsible.

How to move someone outside the household
- Sign in to the account owner’s Netflix account.
- Open the account or membership-management area and look for the extra-member option.
- Confirm that the plan is Standard or Premium, that billing is supported and that a slot is available.
- Purchase the slot and send the invitation to the intended email address.
- Have the recipient activate the invitation in the same country where the account was created.
- If the extra-member option is absent, check the plan, partner billing, country and existing slot count before trying again.
Netflix says a profile transfer can carry over recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings. Transfer preserves personalization; it does not preserve unrestricted access to the original account. The resulting extra-member or standalone account has its own credentials.
College students, second homes and other common situations
College students and adult children
Being a dependent or family member does not by itself make a student living elsewhere part of the account owner’s Household. An eligible extra-member slot or a separate account is the safer arrangement.
Long-distance partners and separated relatives
Two residences remain two households even when the people share a family relationship. A separate account is often simpler when the arrangement is permanent or the other person wants control of payment and cancellation.
Roommates
People who actually live together generally fit the household model. Netflix is concerned with the shared residence, not whether the users are related.

Vacation homes and temporary moves
Regular use from a second residence can trigger household recognition problems. Netflix says moving within the same country may require updating the Netflix Household; it does not guarantee uninterrupted use from two primary locations.
Travel
Netflix allows household members to watch while traveling. Do not treat that permission as a permanent workaround for someone who lives independently.

Partner billing changes the answer
Some Netflix-included or third-party-billed packages do not support extra members, even when the underlying plan name appears eligible. Check the provider before changing plans.

Verizon
Netflix says a Verizon package may cover the main plan but not the extra member. The account owner may need a secondary payment method, and switching to a package with fewer supported slots can cancel existing extra members. See Netflix’s Verizon guidance and Verizon’s entertainment FAQ.
Comcast/Xfinity
For Xfinity billing, Netflix directs customers to the Netflix Account page or their provider for billing and plan eligibility. See Netflix’s Xfinity guidance and Xfinity support.
Troubleshooting paid sharing
The extra-member option is missing
- The account is Standard with ads.
- The subscription is billed through an unsupported partner package.
- All Standard or Premium slots are already occupied.
- The proposed user cannot activate in the account’s country.
The invitation will not activate
Verify the recipient’s email address, available slot, country of activation and any package restrictions. Netflix explicitly requires activation in the same country where the account was created.
A device suddenly asks for Household confirmation
This does not necessarily mean the subscription was canceled. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to update the Household or create an account when a device is identified outside it.
Netflix household-error troubleshooting
The owner downgrades or removes a slot
Moving from Premium to Standard can reduce available extra-member slots. If a slot is removed or the plan becomes ineligible, the former extra member may need to start a new subscription. Profile transfer can help preserve recommendations and history.
The practical decision
- Same household: Keep using the existing account; profiles and simultaneous streams remain governed by the plan.
- Different household, same country, eligible direct-billed Standard or Premium: An extra member is the centralized option if the owner is willing to pay.
- Ad-supported plan, unsupported partner billing, different country or need for independent billing: Open a separate Netflix account.
Netflix says subscribers can sign up independently and change or cancel their plan online at its account-management help page. The official signup page is netflix.com/signup.
