Netflix problems on Apple TV usually come from one of five places: a stuck app, outdated tvOS or Netflix software, a network connection, an account or household restriction, or an older Apple TV that cannot download the current app. Start with the low-risk checks below before deleting Netflix or resetting the device.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
- Try Netflix on a phone or computer connected to the same home network.
- Open another streaming app on the Apple TV.
- Try a different Netflix title or profile.
- Check Netflix’s current help or service information for an interruption.
If Netflix fails on several devices while other services work, suspect Netflix, your account, billing, or household settings. If other Apple TV apps also fail, troubleshoot the network. If Netflix works everywhere else but not on Apple TV, continue with the device-specific steps below. Do not factory-reset the Apple TV during a confirmed service outage.

1. Force-quit and reopen Netflix
On Apple TV 4K with a Siri Remote:
- Double-press the TV button.
- Swipe left or right until Netflix is selected.
- Swipe up on the clickpad to close it.
- Press the TV button, then open Netflix again.
This clears a temporary freeze or loading state without deleting your account information. The app-switcher procedure is not identical on every older Apple TV model.

2. Restart Apple TV
On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, use Settings > System > Restart. You can also hold the TV and Back buttons until the status light blinks rapidly. As a final method, disconnect power, wait at least five seconds, and reconnect it. Apple documents these options in its Apple TV restart guide.
A brief press of the remote’s power control may only place Apple TV in standby; it is not necessarily a full restart. Netflix also recommends turning the device off for about 15 seconds before turning it back on.
3. Test the Apple TV network connection
On Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Network > Test Network. Then check whether:

- Netflix works on another device using the same Wi-Fi.
- A temporary Ethernet connection works better, if your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port.
If the test fails or multiple devices have problems, restart the home network:
- Turn off Apple TV.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router.
- Wait about one minute for the connection to return.
- Turn on Apple TV and try Netflix again.
Restarting the router refreshes its connection and network state; it does not guarantee faster Netflix streaming. Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity while testing. If only Wi-Fi is unreliable, temporarily move Apple TV closer to the router or use Ethernet where possible.
Restore automatic IP and DNS settings
Recent router, DNS, VPN, filtering, or network-control changes can prevent Netflix from connecting even when other websites work. In Settings > General > Network, open the connected network and restore Configure IP and Configure DNS to Automatic unless you have a specific, documented reason to use manual values. This is a diagnostic reset, not a guaranteed speed improvement.
4. Update tvOS and Netflix
Update Apple TV
On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, go to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. You can enable automatic updates from the same menu. Install the version your Apple TV offers; software versions change, so a fixed “latest version” number will eventually become outdated. Apple’s software update history provides current release information.

On Apple TV 3rd generation, the path is Settings > General > Software Updates. If Netflix stopped working immediately after an update, restart Apple TV and reinstall the app where possible rather than repeatedly searching for an older tvOS version. Apple TV does not normally provide a user-facing downgrade option.
Update Netflix
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Netflix or open its listing.
- Select Update if that option appears.
Netflix app versions change frequently. For example, a U.S. App Store listing showed version 3.16.0 around August 15, 2026; that number should not be treated as permanent. Check the current listing at Netflix in the U.S. App Store.
5. Offload or delete and reinstall Netflix
On Apple TV 4K, highlight Netflix on the Home Screen, press and hold the clickpad, and choose Delete App. Confirm, then open the App Store, search for Netflix, and choose Get or Install. Sign in again afterward.
Apple distinguishes between these options:
- Offload: removes the app but keeps its data. It is less disruptive, but may not fix corrupted Netflix data.
- Delete: removes the app and its data. It is a stronger reset and normally requires signing in again.
Deleting or reinstalling can remove locally stored app data and sign you out. Apple’s instructions are in Install or delete apps on Apple TV.

Netflix will not open, freezes, or returns to the Home Screen
Force-quit Netflix, restart Apple TV, update tvOS and Netflix, then reinstall Netflix if the problem continues. If other apps also freeze, focus on the network or Apple TV software rather than repeatedly reinstalling Netflix.
Netflix says “Currently Unavailable”
Netflix says this message commonly indicates an app update problem or difficulty connecting to Netflix. Visit netflix.com/clearcookies on a phone or computer, sign in, and try again. If the page displays error NSEZ-403, wait and try later. Then restart Apple TV, update its software, check the network, restore automatic IP and DNS settings, and restart the home network.

You cannot sign in
Check the email address or phone number, password spelling, and capitalization. Use the primary Netflix account email when the sign-in screen requires an email address. On supported Apple TV versions, use the QR-code or browser flow; Netflix’s Apple TV sign-in route is netflix.com/atv.

Do not assume an old email address is invalid merely because you rarely use it. Verify the account through Netflix. Older reports about the ATV-ui92 error and changing an account email—particularly involving Apple TV 2 and 3—should not be treated as a universal, current Netflix fix.
Error 1002
Netflix associates error 1002 with device information that may need refreshing. Reinstalling the app can be part of the remedy, but follow the Apple TV-specific instructions on Netflix’s error 1002 page rather than applying phone-specific steps to Apple TV.
A title will not play, or playback buffers
Try another title and another profile first. If only one title fails, the issue may be title-specific rather than an Apple TV failure. If every title buffers, test another app, pause heavy network activity, restart the router and Apple TV, and try Ethernet if available. Poor Wi-Fi, router problems, and DNS filtering are more likely when other streaming services show similar symptoms.
Do not transfer Apple’s general Apple TV streaming bandwidth guidance directly into a Netflix-specific requirement. The cause may also be the HDMI chain: if the issue is limited to picture format, audio, an AV receiver, or a television, check the Apple TV output settings, HDMI cable path, receiver, and TV compatibility.
Audio is missing, delayed, or distorted
First test another title and another app. If only Netflix has the problem, restart and reinstall the app. If all Apple TV audio is affected, check the television or receiver input, HDMI connections, audio output configuration, and whether temporarily bypassing the receiver changes the result.
Netflix Household or plan messages appear
Netflix may require household verification even when the app itself is working. A TV connected to the main home network is used to establish or update the Netflix Household; follow the prompts in Netflix or review its Netflix Household guidance.

Also check billing, simultaneous-stream limits, and plan restrictions. Netflix provides a Plan Compatibility check for supported TVs and streaming devices, but feature availability can vary by device, software, country, and plan. See Netflix plan compatibility.

Identify the Apple TV model before assuming the app has disappeared. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD can download apps from the App Store. Apple TV 3rd generation has no App Store and cannot download new apps; it can update built-in apps only. Apple confirms these differences in its Apple TV app-download guide.
If Netflix cannot be installed or updated because the Apple TV is too old, normal app troubleshooting may not solve the problem. A newer Apple TV 4K is justified only after confirming that the existing model is incompatible or has a broader hardware or software failure—not simply because Netflix is temporarily unavailable.
Do not rely on iPhone or iPad AirPlay as a dependable Netflix workaround: Netflix says AirPlay from iPhone and iPad is not supported. Existing supported devices such as a smart TV, game console, computer connected by HDMI, or another compatible streaming device may be alternatives.
7. Reset Apple TV only as a last resort
Use reset only after restarting Netflix and Apple TV, checking the network, updating both software layers, reinstalling Netflix, confirming the account, and checking for a wider Netflix problem.
On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, go to Settings > System > Reset. Apple offers a normal Reset and Reset and Update, which also installs available software updates. Resetting erases saved settings and data, including Wi-Fi credentials and Netflix sign-in information. Apple’s instructions are at Reset or restore Apple TV.
If Netflix fails only on Apple TV after a reset and reinstall, contact Netflix for an app, account, household, or plan issue, Apple for tvOS, hardware, remote, or HDMI problems, and your internet provider or router manufacturer for connection failures. If Netflix fails across all devices, stop resetting Apple TV and investigate the service or account instead.
