NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) entered safe mode on January 15, 2026, after a target-pointing maneuver left its solar arrays angled away from the Sun. Reduced power caused its batteries to discharge gradually, and the spacecraft’s protections triggered safe mode. NASA said TESS returned to normal science operations on January 18—about three days later. The event was a recoverable operational anomaly, not evidence that the telescope was permanently lost or its solar panels were broken. NASA’s status update describes the pointing and power sequence; The Register, quoting a NASA spokesperson, attributes it to a ground command.

What TESS does

TESS is NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, launched in 2018 and operated as a NASA Astrophysics Explorer mission with MIT. It searches for planets beyond our solar system by measuring starlight and looking for the small, repeated dips that occur when a planet crosses in front of its star. Its wide field of view and repeated monitoring also make it useful for studying other changing or moving objects, including comets.

To observe different targets and regions of sky, TESS must change its orientation. Its attitude—the direction the spacecraft points—and the orientation of its solar arrays have to work together: the arrays need suitable exposure to sunlight to generate power while the telescope points where observations require. NASA’s account of the anomaly describes a failure in that coordination, not a reported physical failure of the panels.

What happened on January 15

NASA’s public status update describes the spacecraft sequence. Separately, a NASA spokesperson told The Register that a command sent from the ground caused the problem. The command’s exact wording and the detailed operational sequence have not been published in the cited accounts.

Metal Earth Voyager Spacecraft 3D Metal Model Kit Fascinations
  • HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
  • NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
  • VOYAGER – 1.5 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 1.38 x 1.77 x 6.70 inches.
  • FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
  1. TESS slewed—changed its pointing—to observe a target.
  2. Its solar arrays did not rotate to remain pointed toward the Sun as the spacecraft changed orientation.
  3. The arrays were left at an angle that reduced power generation.
  4. The batteries gradually discharged as available power fell short.
  5. When the spacecraft detected the low-power condition, it entered safe mode.

That is why “the panels stopped working” would be misleading: the public explanation concerns their orientation relative to the Sun, not confirmed damage to the panels. The sources do not say the batteries were completely drained.

What “command error” means—and what remains unknown

The command-error description is supported by The Register’s report, which says NASA attributed the event to a ground command. NASA’s official status update explains the resulting pointing and power problem but does not disclose the exact command.

The available public accounts do not establish whether the instruction was incomplete, improperly sequenced, insufficiently checked, or related to a software defect. They do not identify an operator or show that a particular person made a mistake. A command can be accepted and still lead to an unsafe overall configuration when subsystems interact; the evidence supports describing this as a command-induced operational anomaly, not assigning individual blame.

Why safe mode mattered

Safe mode is a protective spacecraft state used when the vehicle detects a serious condition. In TESS’s case, the low-power condition triggered it while the batteries were discharging. Rather than allowing the condition to progress unchecked, the spacecraft shifted into a mode intended to prioritize survival and enable recovery.

The timeline shows the outcome: TESS entered safe mode on January 15 and returned to normal science operations on January 18, according to NASA. The public update confirms the recovery but does not give a command-by-command account, telemetry values, or a detailed engineering assessment of battery effects. No permanent hardware damage is reported in the cited public statements, but they do not establish that there was no battery impact at all.

What the interruption meant for 3I/ATLAS

The anomaly interrupted a special TESS observation of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. NASA said the planned observation ran from January 15 through January 22, 2026, and that the safe-mode interruption lasted from January 15 to January 18. TESS resumed observing the comet after recovery; the observation was interrupted, not abandoned. NASA said the relevant data were publicly available through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes. See NASA’s report on TESS’s renewed 3I/ATLAS observations.

The special pointing was planned to use TESS’s broad view and continuous photometry to study the comet’s activity. It temporarily displaced the normal Sector 99 schedule. NASA’s special-observation plan explains the observing context.

Which safeguards worked, and which gap was reported?

The protective response and the command-prevention gap are different parts of the incident. According to a NASA spokesperson quoted by The Register, safeguards existed against completely draining the battery, but there were no guardrails specifically preventing the command sequence from leaving the arrays off-Sun. The same report said the mission would review and update its procedures. That is an attributed account, not a published detailed engineering investigation.

  • Protection that worked: The low-power condition triggered safe mode before a reported complete battery drain, leaving the spacecraft recoverable.
  • Gap described in reporting: The reported lack of a guardrail allowed the pointing sequence to produce an off-Sun array orientation.

In engineering terms, possible ways to reduce this class of risk include validating projected power and array orientation before a slew, adding an interlock for unsafe power configurations, requiring an explicit checklist confirmation, or independently reviewing unusual command sequences. These are potential safeguards, not measures the cited sources confirm NASA has implemented. A useful interlock would also need a deliberate override path so that it blocks genuinely dangerous configurations without preventing valid observations or complicating recovery.

How serious was the incident?

The anomaly interrupted science operations and a time-sensitive comet observation, so it was consequential. But TESS returned to normal operations three days after entering safe mode, and the comet observations resumed. The public accounts do not report permanent damage or a mission-ending failure. The unresolved engineering question is how a ground command was able to create an off-Sun configuration without a preventive check—not whether TESS was permanently lost.
