NASA announced two Crew-12 news conferences on January 23, 2026, ahead of the planned SpaceX Dragon mission to the International Space Station. The briefings were scheduled for January 30 at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Crew-12 subsequently launched successfully on February 13, 2026, after its target date changed during final mission planning.
What NASA announced
NASA’s January 23 announcement was a media advisory for two pre-launch news conferences—not a launch-success announcement, a new crew-assignment announcement, or final launch clearance.
The agency said the briefings would cover mission preparations and give reporters an opportunity to question the assigned crew. NASA later updated the advisory on January 27 to reflect changes to the Mission Overview panel.

Both events were scheduled from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA noted that the timing could change because of real-time mission operations. The agency announced online streaming through its digital channels, including its YouTube channel.

The lineup reflected the mission’s broader responsibilities. Crew-12 was a NASA-contracted Commercial Crew flight, but its operations involved NASA, SpaceX, ESA, Roscosmos, and the international space station partnership.

NASA identifies Crew-12 as the agency’s 12th crew-rotation mission using SpaceX’s human-space-transportation system. It was also the 13th Dragon flight carrying astronauts when NASA’s Demo-2 test flight is included in the count.

Why NASA considered moving the launch earlier
NASA and its partners evaluated an earlier Crew-12 launch after the early return of Crew-11. That return followed a medical issue involving one Crew-11 crew member and left the International Space Station operating with a reduced crew complement.

The connection should be stated carefully: NASA’s official updates described an evaluation of options to advance Crew-12, while secondary reporting linked the accelerated planning to the reduced station staffing. The January 23 advisory did not establish that one medical event alone determined the eventual launch date.
An earlier crew-rotation flight could restore staffing for station research, maintenance, and routine operations sooner. However, moving a human-spaceflight launch forward still required spacecraft processing, crew quarantine, training, range coordination, weather assessment, and formal readiness reviews.
The launch schedule changed several times
The dates reported during the campaign were successive targets, not contradictory launch announcements:

The final announced launch target was 5:15 a.m. EST on February 13, 2026, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

From briefing to launch
The January briefings were one step in a larger readiness process. Subsequent milestones included:
- Crew arrival in Florida: The astronauts and cosmonaut reached the launch area for final preparations.
- Quarantine and training: The crew completed the final health and mission-readiness activities required before launch.
- Dry dress rehearsal: The crew practiced wearing spacesuits, traveling to the pad, boarding Dragon, and completing the associated ground procedures.
- Flight Readiness Review: NASA, SpaceX, and mission partners assessed whether the Falcon 9, Dragon, ground systems, and operations were ready.
- Launch Readiness Review: Teams completed the final assessment before proceeding toward liftoff.
NASA reported the crew’s arrival in Florida, the dry dress rehearsal, the Flight Readiness Review, and the Launch Readiness Review separately.

Crew-12 was an International Space Station crew-rotation and science mission, not a private tourism flight. A SpaceX Falcon 9 carried the Dragon spacecraft from SLC-40 to orbit. Dragon then traveled to the station for crew handover, research, maintenance, and station operations.

Where viewers could follow the coverage
NASA announced coverage through NASA+, NASA’s YouTube channel, Amazon Prime, and other NASA social and digital platforms.
The January 30 news conferences were distinct from the later launch and docking broadcasts. NASA was the best source for agency briefings, crew-rotation context, and station operations; SpaceX provided first-party launch and vehicle timeline information.

Why the briefings mattered
The two sessions gave viewers different kinds of information. The mission leadership panel addressed schedule pressure, readiness, station operations, and coordination among the participating organizations. The crew panel focused on the astronauts’ roles and the human side of the flight.
The briefings also provided a snapshot of how Commercial Crew missions work: SpaceX supplied the Falcon 9 and Dragon transportation system, while NASA managed the contracted crew-rotation mission and ISS objectives alongside international partners.
Because the launch schedule was still fluid on January 23, the briefings should not be read as proof that every technical gate had been cleared. Those approvals came through later reviews, and Crew-12 ultimately launched on February 13, 2026.
