NASA-led researchers have found experimental evidence that hydrogen in the solar wind can react with oxygen in lunar dust to form hydroxyl and possibly water. The result supports a decades-old hypothesis about surface chemistry; it does not show that the Sun is making a large, usable reservoir. The experiment could not determine exactly how much of its water-related signal was molecular water (H₂O) rather than hydroxyl (OH).

What NASA’s experiment actually confirmed

NASA publicized the result on April 15, 2025, describing a laboratory test of a predicted chemical process. The researchers used lunar dust collected by Apollo 17 in 1972, baked the samples to remove possible terrestrial water contamination, then exposed them to simulated solar wind in an airless apparatus. After several days, they detected an infrared feature near 3 microns, where water-related molecules absorb energy.

The exposure represented roughly 80,000 years of natural solar-wind exposure because the accelerator delivered particles at a much higher dose than the Moon receives naturally. The signal’s shape was consistent with hydroxyl and water formation, but the measurements could not conclusively separate H₂O from OH or establish their proportions. NASA’s account of the experiment and its limits is at NASA’s explanation of the solar-wind experiment.

  • Supported: Solar-wind hydrogen can drive water-related chemistry in lunar material under the tested conditions.
  • Not established: The experiment did not measure a natural production rate, prove a harvestable deposit, or show that all lunar water comes from the solar wind.

This was not the first detection of lunar water. Water ice in permanently shadowed polar areas had supporting evidence announced in 2018, and NASA reported water on sunlit terrain in 2020. The newer result concerns how some water-related molecules may form in surface dust. NASA summarizes the separate discoveries and possible sources of lunar water in its overview of lunar water and ice.

How the solar wind can help make water

The phrase “the Sun creates water” is shorthand. The Sun does not supply a complete water molecule: the solar wind supplies hydrogen, while lunar minerals supply oxygen.

  1. The solar wind carries charged hydrogen nuclei, mostly protons, through space.
  2. Because the Moon has no substantial atmosphere or global protective magnetic field, solar-wind particles can strike exposed surface material directly, though the Moon is periodically shielded as it passes through Earth’s magnetotail.
  3. Some implanted protons can acquire electrons and become hydrogen atoms.
  4. Hydrogen can interact with oxygen already bound in minerals such as silica, forming hydroxyl and potentially H₂O.

NASA’s solar-wind explainer describes the Moon’s exposure, while its background on how water ingredients could form on lunar surfaces discusses the proposed mineral chemistry. Solar wind is one possible contributor to lunar hydration, alongside processes such as comet impacts and micrometeorites; it is not evidence of a single source acting everywhere all the time.

Surface hydration and polar ice are different resources

“Water on the Moon” can refer to different chemical forms, locations, and levels of usefulness. Hydroxyl, molecular water, ice, and recoverable water are not interchangeable. NASA says water-related molecules have been detected in the upper few millimeters of lunar surface material, where available instruments can have difficulty distinguishing OH from H₂O.

Feature Solar-wind hydration Polar water ice
Where and how it occurs Water-related molecules form in exposed surface regolith through chemistry involving solar-wind hydrogen and mineral oxygen. Ice occurs in permanently shadowed regions, where the absence of direct sunlight helps keep deposits cold.
Behavior Likely shallow and mobile; molecules may move, desorb, or escape as the surface warms. Can be more stable in cold traps, but its distribution, concentration, depth, and accessibility still need characterization.
Resource significance A possible contributor to surface hydration and a subject for further measurement; useful-scale extraction has not been demonstrated. A more obvious potential source for substantial future supplies, but not yet a uniformly mapped or proven operational resource.

The distinction matters because a detected water-related signal is not the same as a deposit that a mission can mine. Sunlit surface hydration may be widespread, but the experiment does not show that it is concentrated enough for practical collection. Polar ice is a different target with its own uncertainties. NASA’s lunar water overview covers evidence for both sunlit hydration and shadowed ice.

Why the water signal changes during the lunar day

Water-related signatures can be stronger in the cooler lunar morning and weaken as the surface heats. Warming can make molecules migrate across the surface, desorb from grains, or escape into the Moon’s extremely tenuous environment. As the ground cools, some signal can rise again.

This pattern is consistent with a dynamic cycle of formation, movement, and loss rather than a fixed layer of water simply accumulating in place. How much is produced or lost at a particular location depends on conditions including temperature and mineral composition; the 2025 experiment did not establish a global production rate.

What this could mean for Artemis missions

The near-term value is better science and resource planning, not a newly available water supply. Understanding surface hydration could help mission teams decide when and where to sample, interpret measurements from future instruments, and refine models of how lunar water is created, transported, trapped, and lost.

For missions considering resources, the result also reinforces the need to distinguish transient hydration in exposed soil from more stable deposits in shadowed regions. NASA’s lunar-surface technology work includes resource utilization alongside systems such as power, excavation, dust mitigation, and communications for sustained lunar operations. The solar-wind result may inform that work, but it does not itself change what is known about where substantial accessible resources are located.

Can astronauts harvest solar-wind water for drinking or fuel?

Not on the evidence of this experiment. A useful water system would have to handle far more than detecting a molecule: it would need to gather material, release water-related molecules from mineral grains, capture vapor, remove contaminants, and store usable water. It would also need to operate amid abrasive dust and extreme temperature swings, with an energy balance that makes sense.

Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen for life-support uses or propellant, but that requires usable water in the first place and additional processing. NASA’s technical report on lunar-water propellant addresses the broader extraction, purification, storage, and electrolysis challenge. The solar-wind experiment did not demonstrate any of those operational steps. For large-scale supplies, polar ice remains the more plausible resource target, subject to prospecting and engineering validation.

What scientists still need to find out

  • What fraction of the observed signal is H₂O and what fraction is OH?
  • How quickly does the chemistry produce water-related molecules under natural solar-wind conditions?
  • How do latitude, mineral composition, temperature, surface age, and solar activity affect the amount present?
  • How much of the hydration moves, is lost, or becomes trapped, including near polar regions?
  • Could any shallow surface hydration ever be collected economically and reliably?

NASA’s experiment strengthens the case that the Moon’s exposed soil can participate in an active water-related surface cycle. It does not turn sunlit lunar dust into a ready source of drinking water or rocket fuel.
