NASA’s new lunar spacesuit is making measurable progress, but the program is behind its original schedule and has less backup than planned. In February 2026, NASA said Axiom Space’s AxEMU had completed more than 850 hours of pressurized testing and passed a contractor-led technical review. In April, NASA’s inspector general warned that the demonstrations were at least 18 months late and modeled a possible 2031 demonstration date if delays resemble those of other recent NASA spaceflight programs. That 2031 date is a risk scenario, not a confirmed delivery date or proof that a Moon landing will wait until then.
The concern is broader than one allegedly broken suit: it includes schedule and contracting decisions, the loss of a second provider, and the aging suits NASA still uses for spacewalks aboard the International Space Station.
Three suits, three different parts of the problem
“NASA’s spacesuit problem” can refer to distinct systems. The AxEMU, developed by Axiom Space, is intended for astronauts working on the lunar surface during Artemis missions. It must support life in vacuum while enabling movement, scientific work, communications and emergency operations in lunar dust, temperatures and reduced gravity.

NASA also sought a next-generation microgravity suit for spacewalks, including operations aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Both lunar and microgravity suits were part of NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services, or xEVAS, procurement. Separately, astronauts currently use the legacy Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) for ISS spacewalks. The EMU is not the AxEMU, and problems maintaining the EMU should not be attributed to Axiom’s lunar suit.

NASA’s stated goals for the AxEMU include improved mobility, adjustability and sizing options. But a suit that looks mobile on Earth is not automatically ready for a lunar mission: NASA must establish that its life support, pressure integrity, thermal control, communications, dust protection, fit and emergency procedures work together under mission conditions.
How NASA’s plan lost schedule and redundancy
After nearly two decades of efforts that did not produce a flight-ready upgraded suit for NASA’s ISS and Artemis needs, the agency shifted toward buying spacesuit services from commercial providers. In 2022, NASA awarded xEVAS contracts to Axiom and Collins Aerospace, with a combined maximum value of about $3.1 billion. Rather than simply buying finished suits as conventional government hardware, NASA planned to purchase services and capabilities for missions.
The arrangement was meant to encourage competition and give NASA alternatives if one provider ran into trouble. The original targets included an Axiom lunar-suit demonstration in November 2025 and a Collins microgravity demonstration on the ISS by April 2026. Those dates proved too optimistic. NASA’s inspector general (OIG) says both demonstrations were at least 18 months late against the original schedule.
Collins did not complete its microgravity suit preliminary design review until June 2024, about a year after its contractual deadline. That month, NASA and Collins mutually agreed to descope Collins’ xEVAS task orders because Collins could not meet the agreed ISS demonstration schedule. The OIG also identified schedule-management and subcontractor-management problems. This was a schedule and program-performance issue; it does not establish that Collins’ design was unsafe.

With Collins’ active task orders descoped, Axiom became NASA’s sole near-term xEVAS provider. That leaves less technical choice and backup capacity if a design, component or schedule encounters trouble. It also weakens the practical benefit of the competition NASA originally sought: there is no equally mature alternative suit ready to substitute in the immediate effort.
Why the schedule slipped—and why the contract model matters
The OIG’s findings point to more than contractor lateness. NASA set demanding requirements and required bidders to pursue both microgravity and lunar suits, a burden the watchdog said narrowed an already limited pool of qualified competitors. The spacesuit-services market was immature; it did not offer a mature commercial base of established providers and proven service-delivery models.
NASA also used a firm-fixed-price, service-based approach for a developmental effort with substantial technical uncertainty. Such a model can shift some cost risk to a provider and encourage commercial innovation, but it does not make a difficult design predictable. The OIG concluded that the model created additional risk in a market that did not yet exist in mature form. NASA retains requirements, oversight, safety responsibility, reviews and certification authority; commercial development does not mean the agency has outsourced the decision that a suit is fit to fly.

A suit must hold pressure and protect its wearer while still letting an astronaut bend, kneel, walk, climb, use tools and collect samples. NASA has said it is testing task performance at different suit pressures; higher pressure can reduce acclimation time and increase time available for surface operations, while pressure can also affect mobility. Lunar dust, thermal extremes, life support, communications, fit across the intended crew and rescue of an incapacitated astronaut add further requirements and interfaces. More capability can mean more design and integration work; that is an engineering trade-off, not evidence of a specific current defect.

A real past design concern, but not proof of a current defect
There has been a specific safety-related concern in the public record. In 2023, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that NASA’s original suit design did not provide the minimum emergency life-support duration required for Artemis III. Axiom representatives said some elements might need redesign, creating a possible delivery delay.
That finding is from an earlier development stage. It should not be presented as proof that the current AxEMU still fails the requirement. NASA’s February 2026 update described extensive subsequent testing and a contractor-led technical review, while also making clear that NASA still had reviews and mission-readiness decisions ahead. A historical design shortfall matters because it illustrates the scrutiny a crew-survival system needs—not because it settles the current suit’s status.
What the 2031 warning actually says
The OIG compared the planned time from contract award to demonstration with the historical average for recent NASA spaceflight programs, about 8.7 years from award to test flight. It found the planned suit schedules were less than half that average, then modeled what could happen if Axiom experienced delays comparable to the historical average. Under that scenario, the lunar and microgravity demonstrations could slip to 2031.

Spacesuits are not identical to spacecraft or launch vehicles, so a historical average is a warning about schedule margin, not a precise prediction. The OIG’s more direct finding is that the original schedule was unrealistic and the demonstrations were already substantially late.

Progress is real, but testing is not certification
NASA’s February 12, 2026 update is an important counterweight to the schedule warning. The agency said Axiom had completed a contractor-led technical review and that NASA and Axiom had conducted more than 850 hours of pressurized testing with people inside the AxEMU. Testing included underwater work at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, weighting the suit to simulate lunar gravity, pressure and mobility evaluations, task performance, and emergency-rescue operations. Axiom had also begun receiving parts for the first flight unit.
NASA said it still planned a critical design sync review to verify that hardware and systems were on track for final testing and delivery. A contractor-led review is not NASA flight certification. Nor does a test article automatically equal a finished flight unit with qualified hardware, spares, completed integration and enough time for mission-specific checks. The public update documents substantial work; it does not establish that every certification requirement has been met or that NASA has declared the suit ready for a particular Artemis mission.

While the new systems are developed, NASA must keep the existing EMUs available for orbital spacewalks. The OIG says the EMU design dates back more than 50 years and the suits have exceeded their intended 15-year lifespan. That describes the system’s age and design history, not the age of every individual suit or component.

A 2025 OIG report found weaknesses in ISS suit maintenance and operations, including components not always being replaced or maintained as needed, schedule delays and cost overruns. Collins is the sole provider for EMU maintenance and operations aboard the ISS, and NASA had limited leverage to improve performance. As of July 2025, the relevant maintenance and operations contract was valued at $1.5 billion through 2027.

This is a two-front challenge: develop a new suit for lunar exploration while sustaining aging orbital suits. The AxEMU does not simply replace the EMU; the systems serve different environments and missions. And Collins’ EMU maintenance performance is a separate matter from Axiom’s AxEMU development.
Could the suit delay Artemis?
Yes, a spacesuit delay could affect Artemis planning because the suit is a crew-survival system, not an accessory. Before a lunar landing, NASA needs evidence that the suit can provide life support, pressure and thermal protection, mobility, communications and emergency capability, and that it integrates with the lander, tools and mission procedures. If the suit is not ready, NASA could have to replan mission timing, duration or objectives, or wait for qualification and integration work.
But the available evidence does not show that the spacesuit alone will determine the next landing date. Artemis also depends on other major systems, including the lander and launch vehicle. The GAO said in 2023 that a 2025 landing was unlikely amid multiple challenges. In its April 2026 report, the OIG described NASA as working toward a 2028 lunar landing while warning that suit availability posed a challenge. A suit slip could contribute to a delay without being its sole cause.
What to watch next
- NASA’s own design and readiness reviews: A contractor review and NASA’s planned critical design sync review are milestones, not interchangeable with final flight certification.
- Qualification evidence: Watch for results that demonstrate pressure integrity, life support—including emergency duration—thermal and dust protection, mobility, communications and repeatable performance across the required mission duration.
- Flight hardware and spares: Receiving parts for a first flight unit is progress, but NASA will still need qualified hardware, maintainable systems and sufficient spares for mission operations.
- Integrated testing: The suit must work with the lander, airlock, tools and procedures, not just in isolated suit tests.
- Schedule and backup planning: With Collins’ xEVAS work descoped, a slip at Axiom has fewer near-term alternatives behind it. NASA’s schedule updates will show whether the program is regaining margin.
The right test of “ready” is not whether a suit has passed one review or accumulated many test hours. It is whether NASA has completed the evidence, qualification and integration needed to accept it for a specific crewed mission.
The verdict
NASA’s lunar suit program has serious schedule and acquisition risks, and its original two-provider strategy has lost its near-term redundancy. At the same time, Axiom’s suit is an active development program with substantial reported testing—not a proven failure or abandoned project. The strongest public conclusion is that NASA has progress but limited schedule margin, while the 2031 figure remains a conditional OIG warning rather than a confirmed Moon-landing date.
