NASA’s first Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA-1) ended on July 6, 2024, when four research volunteers exited the Mars Dune Alpha habitat in Houston after 378 days inside. The ground-based experiment did not put people on Mars or prove that a Mars mission is safe. It tested how a small crew manages health, food, work, maintenance, limited resources and isolation under selected Mars-mission-like constraints.
What happened in CHAPEA-1?
CHAPEA-1 began on June 25, 2023, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. On July 6, 2024, the four-person crew completed the planned 378-day confinement period and emerged from Mars Dune Alpha.
It was the first of three planned yearlong CHAPEA analog missions. NASA designed the program to collect data that can inform future exploration standards, habitat and vehicle requirements, food systems and risk-versus-resource decisions.
NASA’s completion announcement described the mission as a simulated Mars mission. That distinction matters: the crew remained on Earth, inside a controlled research facility with access to ground-based medical and operational support.

Who was in the crew?
- Kelly Haston — commander
- Ross Brockwell — flight engineer
- Nathan Jones — medical officer
- Anca Selariu — science officer
They were research volunteers assigned operational roles, not a crew of NASA astronauts traveling through space. Calling them astronauts without qualification would make the experiment sound more like a spaceflight than it was.
Inside Mars Dune Alpha
Mars Dune Alpha is an approximately 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat at Johnson Space Center. It includes four private crew quarters, kitchen and dining areas, two bathrooms, medical and technical spaces, work areas, recreation and exercise facilities, and an area for growing crops.

The 3D-printed structure was significant as a test of additive construction for future habitats. But it did not demonstrate that a printer, construction robot, power system or building material could operate reliably on Mars. Mars Dune Alpha was built on Earth and operated with Earth-based infrastructure.

NASA’s CHAPEA overview describes the habitat, its research goals and the constraints imposed on the crew.
What did the crew do for a year?
CHAPEA-1 was not a single experiment with one simple task. It was an integrated mission-system study combining human health, food, equipment, scheduling, science and teamwork.

The crew’s activities included:
- Simulated Mars surface walks
- Robotic operations
- Habitat maintenance, repairs and technical work
- Crop growing and harvesting
- Exercise and physiological monitoring
- Medical measurements and health-related research
- Psychological and behavioral assessments
- Science and operational tasks
- Meal preparation, hygiene, sleep and other routine living activities
This mixture was important. A future Mars crew would not spend all its time conducting science or all its time exercising. It would have to switch between exploration, repairs, health management, food planning, domestic work and unexpected problems while preserving performance over a long period.
Which Mars-mission stressors were simulated?
NASA imposed selected constraints intended to resemble parts of a long-duration exploration mission. These included:
- Isolation and confinement
- Limited resources and consumables
- Equipment failures
- Significant and sometimes competing workloads
- Communication and operational constraints
- High-tempo simulated surface activity
The communication conditions should not be treated as identical to real Earth–Mars communications. Actual missions would face changing latency, bandwidth limits, possible outages and periods when communication may be unavailable. The available NASA descriptions establish that communication-related constraints were simulated, but not that every feature of Mars communications was reproduced.

What was NASA trying to learn?
NASA’s central interest was how people and mission systems perform together over a long period. The agency intended to study:
- How isolation and confinement affect health, behavior and performance
- How demanding workloads influence cognition and decision-making
- How crews handle maintenance and failures with limited resources
- How much food and water a long-duration crew may require
- Whether crops can supplement stored food
- Which exercise, nutrition or other countermeasures can preserve physical and behavioral performance
- How habitat volume, vehicle mass, food systems and resource restrictions interact
That makes CHAPEA relevant to more than astronaut psychology. Its data may inform exploration food-system design, habitat planning, mission operations and the trade-offs between carrying more supplies and accepting greater operational risk.
What did CHAPEA-1 not simulate?
CHAPEA-1 was a high-fidelity human-performance analog, not a literal replica of Mars. It did not fully reproduce:
- Martian gravity, which is roughly one-third of Earth’s gravity
- Mars’s thin atmosphere and pressure environment
- Radiation exposure during transit or on the surface
- Launch, interplanetary travel, landing or ascent from Mars
- The full life-support danger of a hostile planetary environment
- The irreversible distance from Earth and the inability to evacuate quickly
- The psychological consequences of knowing that real rescue could be unavailable for years
Planned equipment failures can test procedures and decision-making. They cannot reproduce the uncertainty, consequences or potentially fatal stakes of a genuine failure millions of kilometres from Earth. Likewise, crop growth was part of the food-system study; it did not make the habitat self-sufficient.

Operationally, yes: the crew completed the planned confinement period, carried out mission tasks and generated a substantial health, performance, behavioral and operational dataset.

Scientifically, the completion itself was not a final result. It showed that NASA completed the experiment and collected data for analysis. It did not, by itself, prove that humans can safely live on Mars for a year, identify a single cause for any health or behavioral change, or validate a complete Mars mission architecture.
The public NASA material available for this article describes CHAPEA-1’s goals and operations but does not provide a comprehensive, peer-reviewed Mission 1 results package supporting definitive claims about the crew’s nutrition, cognition, psychology or long-term health. The careful description is therefore “data collected for analysis,” not “NASA discovered that Mars travel is safe.”
The mission also involved only four people. Its yearlong duration improves the value of long-term observation, but the small sample means results should not automatically be generalized to every future astronaut, crew composition or mission design. Integrating many variables makes the simulation realistic as an operational study, while making it harder to isolate which factor caused a particular outcome.
Where does CHAPEA stand now?
CHAPEA is a three-mission program rather than a one-off demonstration. NASA’s public program pages state that CHAPEA-2 began on October 19, 2025, and is scheduled to run through October 31, 2026. It uses the same Mars Dune Alpha habitat and continues studying health, performance, operational constraints and exploration technologies.

As a result, CHAPEA-1 is best understood as the opening dataset in a multi-mission research program. Comparing results across missions should help NASA distinguish repeatable patterns from effects specific to one crew or one set of circumstances.
See NASA’s CHAPEA program page, the CHAPEA-2 start announcement and NASA’s Mission 2 overview for the program’s stated schedule and objectives.
The bottom line
CHAPEA-1’s importance lies in its length and integrated workload, not in the claim that four people “lived on Mars.” The crew completed a controlled 378-day experiment involving isolation, limited resources, maintenance, food production, exercise, science and teamwork. That gives NASA useful evidence about managing people and mission systems under selected Mars-like constraints—while leaving the hardest physical and logistical problems of a real Mars expedition unresolved.
