A striking NASA photograph shows part of Zimbabwe’s Great Dyke, a mineral-rich geological intrusion that formed approximately 2.5 billion years ago. But despite renewed coverage in 2026, this is not a new NASA discovery: the image was taken from the International Space Station on September 30, 2010.
What NASA’s space photo shows
The feature is the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe, a long, narrow formation running broadly northeast to southwest across central Zimbabwe. The Great Dyke extends for more than 550 kilometers (342 miles), while its width varies from roughly 3 to 12 kilometers (2 to 8 miles).
The orbital photograph does not show the entire formation. It captures the Great Dyke’s southern end from an oblique viewpoint aboard the International Space Station. Its strong linear shape and contrast with the surrounding terrain make it visible in imagery taken from orbit.

NASA Earth Observatory describes the Great Dyke as an approximately 2.5-billion-year-old intrusion cutting through even older rocks of the Zimbabwe Craton.
It is an archival NASA image, not a 2026 discovery
The photograph’s official catalog number is ISS025-E-5538. It was acquired on September 30, 2010, during Expedition 25 aboard the International Space Station. NASA Earth Observatory published its feature about the image on October 11, 2010.
The photograph was taken with a Nikon D2Xs camera and 180-millimeter lens. NASA cropped and enhanced the image for presentation and removed lens artifacts. The image is associated with NASA’s Crew Earth Observations work and the Johnson Space Center’s Image Science and Analysis Laboratory.

That chronology matters. Articles published in February 2026 brought renewed attention to the photograph, but there is no indication that NASA had just photographed, discovered, or scientifically identified the Great Dyke. The 2026 coverage is better understood as a rediscovery of an archival space image.

How the Great Dyke formed
The Great Dyke developed when magma rose through deep weaknesses in the African crust. NASA’s description indicates that the intrusion’s triangular or keel-like cross-section is consistent with magma moving upward along deep faults associated with extension of the crust.
- Magma moved upward through deep faults or zones of crustal extension.
- The molten material entered the much older Zimbabwe Craton.
- As it cooled, minerals crystallized into layered mafic igneous rock.
- Later faults displaced some sections of the structure.
- Erosion and more recent surface processes shaped the landscape visible today.
The age of approximately 2.5 billion years applies to the intrusion and its formation. It does not mean that every visible surface feature in the photograph is exactly that old.

Why the formation matters economically
The Great Dyke is important not only because of its age and size, but also because particular layers contain valuable metals. NASA identifies chromite and platinum as especially abundant and says they are actively mined.
Chromite is the principal chromium-bearing mineral. Chromium is important in stainless steel and other industrial materials. Platinum-group metals are used in catalysts and a range of chemical and industrial applications.
Layered mafic intrusions can concentrate metals as magma cools and different minerals crystallize at different stages. That geological layering helps explain why economically valuable minerals occur in particular zones rather than being distributed evenly throughout the entire formation.
NASA also lists chromium, nickel, copper, platinum, titanium, iron, vanadium, and tin among metals associated with this type of geological environment. The available NASA source confirms the Great Dyke’s mineral significance and active mining, but it does not establish a current global ranking for its platinum reserves or production. Claims such as “the world’s largest platinum deposit” therefore require separate, current geological or mining data.

Ancient rock and recent fire scars in one frame
The photograph contains a useful geological contrast. NASA identifies two large burn scars near the upper-center portion of the image. These scars are relatively recent landscape features overlying a geological structure formed billions of years ago.
That juxtaposition is one reason orbital images are valuable: a single frame can show evidence of vastly different timescales. The Great Dyke records ancient magmatic activity deep in Earth’s history, while the burn scars record much more recent fires affecting the landscape.
How the ISS photograph differs from NASA’s satellite view
NASA has published more than one view of the Great Dyke, and the images should not be confused.
| Image | Date | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| ISS025-E-5538 | September 30, 2010 | An oblique astronaut photograph showing the southern end of the Great Dyke, emphasizing its visual form and surrounding terrain. |
| Terra/ASTER image | August 29, 2000 | A wider, simulated-natural-color satellite view that places part of the formation in regional context. |
The earlier NASA Terra/ASTER view of the Great Dyke is a separate image acquired a decade before the ISS photograph. The astronaut image offers an angled perspective, while the satellite view is better suited to seeing the structure across a broader area.

What “hidden geological wonder” gets wrong
The Great Dyke can reasonably be called hidden from a general audience because many people have never seen it. But it was not hidden from geologists, and the ISS photograph did not reveal it for the first time to science.
Nor does the image alone prove the formation’s age, mineral content, tectonic history, or mining value. Those conclusions come from geological studies and the interpretation accompanying NASA’s image record. The photograph shows the formation’s scale, linear expression, and relationship with the surrounding landscape.
The accurate summary is straightforward: NASA’s 2010 astronaut photograph shows part of Zimbabwe’s ancient Great Dyke, a more-than-550-kilometer-long layered mafic intrusion formed approximately 2.5 billion years ago. Its renewed circulation in 2026 is a new media moment—not a new NASA discovery.
