On April 30, 2024, astronauts wearing pressurized prototype lunar suits worked with full-scale developmental hardware for SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System (HLS). The NASA–SpaceX–Axiom Space exercise tested how people might move through and use a lunar lander while wearing bulky, restrictive equipment—not whether Starship was ready to fly to the Moon. The Artemis plan has since changed: NASA now plans Artemis III as a 2027 low-Earth-orbit demonstration, with Artemis IV targeted as the first crewed Artemis lunar landing in early 2028.

What happened in the April 2024 test?

NASA astronaut Doug “Wheels” Wheelock and Axiom Space astronaut Peggy Whitson wore pressurized developmental Axiom suits at SpaceX’s facility in Hawthorne, California, and interacted with a full-scale Starship HLS development article. NASA described it as the first time astronauts in pressurized suits had worked directly with Starship HLS test hardware. The exercise included crew-access and surface-access features, including a concept for an elevator to carry astronauts between the lander and the lunar surface. NASA’s account of the test and Axiom’s report describe it as an integrated operational exercise.

“Integrated” is the important word. A spacesuit and a lander can each work in isolation yet prove awkward or unsafe when used together. The team could observe how suited astronauts approached access points, moved around the test hardware, and interacted with the lander’s layout. The purpose was to identify design or procedure problems while changes are still possible.

Why test astronauts in suits with the lander?

A pressurized suit is a small spacecraft around its wearer. Its joints resist movement, gloves reduce dexterity, and its helmet and equipment affect visibility, reach, balance, and communication. Those constraints change how an astronaut climbs, turns, handles a tool, or helps a crewmate.

On a lander, those details become system-design questions. Can someone in a suit get through the intended access route? Can they reach a handhold, operate a latch, or see where they are placing their boots? Is there room to maneuver on the elevator and remain stable? Can two suited astronauts work together or pass through a constrained area? Can they carry scientific equipment, and is there a practical way to respond to an emergency?

These are questions a drawing or an unpressurized walk-through cannot answer as well as a person wearing a pressurized suit. A mockup exercise can expose an interface problem—such as a handle that is hard to grip with a glove—before it becomes a flight-hardware or mission-procedure problem. The dossier does not report that any specific failure occurred in this test; these are the kinds of issues integrated evaluations are meant to investigate.

The suit: Axiom’s AxEMU, not the orange Orion suit

The suit family involved is Axiom Space’s Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, developed under NASA’s xEVAS spacesuit-services procurement. It is intended for lunar surface activity: walking, geology, collecting samples, and using tools and equipment outside a spacecraft. That is a different job from the orange launch-and-entry suit worn by astronauts inside Orion. The AxEMU is a lunar EVA suit, not an alternative name for the Orion cabin suit. NASA describes the suit’s development and evaluation here.

A lunar suit has to balance mobility with pressure containment, thermal protection, abrasion and dust resistance, communications, life support, and compatibility with gloves, boots, and tools. These goals can pull against one another: adding structure may improve protection but make movement harder, while reducing weight can bring durability trade-offs. Testing therefore has to consider not just whether the suit holds pressure, but whether an astronaut can perform realistic tasks in it.

The 2024 exercise used developmental suit hardware; it should not be read as proof that the final AxEMU had completed certification. In February 2026, NASA said Axiom had completed a technical review and that NASA would conduct a critical design evaluation before determining readiness for Artemis III-related requirements. Development and readiness evaluations remain distinct from a ground integration test.

What Starship HLS is—and is not

Starship HLS is SpaceX’s lunar-landing system being developed for NASA’s Human Landing System program. It belongs to SpaceX’s broader Starship family, but it is not simply an ordinary Earth-orbit Starship with a different label. HLS must support crew operations in lunar orbit, descend to the surface, provide a habitable environment, support surface access, and return astronauts to lunar orbit. NASA describes the HLS concept as roughly 165 feet (50 meters) tall—about the height of a 15-story building—in its Human Landing Systems overview.

A vehicle that tall makes access between the crew area and the surface a major operational issue. An elevator, handholds, restraints, communications, suit mobility, and emergency procedures all have to work as parts of one system. The 2024 test examined that human-vehicle interface using developmental hardware; it did not establish that a flight-ready lander had made a lunar landing or that the mockup captured every feature of the final vehicle.

Artemis III’s role changed after the test

When the test took place in 2024, NASA described it as preparation for Artemis III, then planned as the first crewed Artemis lunar-surface mission. NASA redesigned the campaign in 2026. The current plan makes Artemis III a crewed low-Earth-orbit demonstration and moves the first planned crewed lunar landing to Artemis IV. The difference matters: older descriptions of Artemis III as the landing mission reflect the plan at the time, not NASA’s current architecture.

What Artemis III is expected to demonstrate

Under NASA’s preliminary plan, the Space Launch System (SLS) will send Orion and four astronauts into low Earth orbit. There, Orion is expected to rendezvous and dock with one or both commercial lunar-lander test vehicles from SpaceX and Blue Origin. The mission is intended to exercise integrated operations and relevant interfaces among the crew, Orion, landers, and ground teams, including systems such as life support, communications, and propulsion.

NASA has said the crew may enter at least one lander test article, but detailed operations are still being developed. Public plans do not establish that astronauts will definitely board SpaceX’s Starship test article, test both landers, or perform an AxEMU spacewalk during Artemis III. Those specifics should not be inferred from the 2024 ground test. NASA’s Artemis III mission page and crew page provide the agency’s current information.

Why spacesuit readiness remains a schedule concern

The suit is one element in a chain of mission-critical systems. A successful ground exercise does not resolve questions about flight certification, HLS development, refueling, software, launch cadence, or uncrewed demonstrations—and a suit must be ready for the mission architecture in which it will be used.

NASA’s Office of Inspector General has reported substantial delays against original spacesuit demonstration goals. After NASA and Collins Aerospace agreed in 2024 to descope Collins’ task orders, Axiom remained NASA’s provider for the relevant next-generation suit work. That leaves schedule risk concentrated in a single provider. The OIG discussed planning for a late-2027 lunar-suit demonstration and warned that, if delays resembled historical averages for comparable programs, demonstrations could slip much farther, potentially into 2031. The 2031 scenario is an OIG risk projection—not NASA’s announced mission date or a scheduled launch. Read the OIG audit and its discussion of schedule risks.

What the 2024 exercise proved—and what it did not

It showed the value of putting suited people in direct contact with lander development hardware early enough to examine access, movement, reach, and operational procedures. That is meaningful progress in integration: it connects human capabilities and limitations to vehicle design rather than treating the suit and lander as separate projects.

But it was not a lunar mission rehearsal or flight qualification. The ground exercise did not prove Starship HLS had landed on the Moon, that its final crewed configuration was ready, or that AxEMU had completed all readiness milestones. Nor could a ground test reproduce lunar gravity, vacuum, radiation, extreme thermal conditions, or actual lunar dust behavior. A development article may not duplicate final flight geometry or loads, either.

The main lesson is practical: crew access is part of the spacecraft. NASA’s 2026 plan gives Artemis III a new role as an Earth-orbit step toward later landings, but the same integration challenge remains—astronauts, suits, landers, and procedures must work together before a crew can safely operate on the Moon.
