n8n is a workflow automation platform for connecting applications and APIs through visual workflows, with JavaScript and Python available when a workflow needs custom logic. Developers can use n8n Cloud or run a self-managed instance; the right choice depends on how much infrastructure and maintenance the team wants to own, and which current plan and license terms apply.
What n8n does
n8n describes itself as fair-code workflow automation software that combines business process automation with AI capabilities. Its workflows connect applications through APIs and manipulate data with little or no code, while custom nodes and code offer ways to extend workflows. See the n8n documentation, n8n product site, and project repository for the vendor’s current descriptions.
A workflow typically expresses a sequence of steps: receive or detect an event, transform or route its data, call another service, and handle what happens next. The visual interface can make that flow easier to inspect than a collection of disconnected scripts. It does not remove the need to design for credentials, errors, retries, data quality, and the consequences of automated actions.
Where code and AI fit
The product site says developers can write JavaScript or Python in workflows, combine AI actions with human approvals, and test AI workflows with real data. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent findings about accuracy, reliability, or performance. For consequential actions, decide which outputs need validation and where a person must review or approve a result before it changes data or reaches a customer.
#1 Best Overall
Official materials have returned inconsistent integration counts, so there is no reliable figure to quote here. Check the current integration directory and documentation for the specific service and operation your workflow needs rather than assuming that a named app integration covers every endpoint or use case.
Choose Cloud or self-hosting
n8n documents a managed Cloud route and self-managed options, including getting started with npm or Docker. The repository also describes cloud and self-hosted operation. These are deployment choices, not a universal ranking: Cloud reduces the infrastructure work your team must operate, while self-management gives your team responsibility for the environment in which n8n runs.
| Consideration | n8n Cloud | Self-managed n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure | Use the managed service rather than operating your own n8n server. | Your team operates the deployment and its supporting infrastructure. |
| Setup and upkeep | Can avoid setting up and maintaining a server yourself; verify current service details with n8n. | Plan for installation and ongoing maintenance. Exact operational requirements depend on the deployment and are not established here. |
| Deployment control | Choose this when a managed route suits your requirements. | Choose this when your team wants to manage its own deployment; confirm that the control you need is compatible with current licensing and plan terms. |
| Always-on operation | Review the current Cloud service and plan details for your workload. | Provide an environment that stays available for the workflows you need to run. The official sources do not specify a universal host or hardware requirement. |
For a small project or a team that does not want server operations to become part of the work, a managed service may be the simpler operational fit. Self-hosting may make sense when the team is prepared to own deployment and maintenance. These are decision criteria, not claims that one route is inherently more secure, faster, or less expensive. Compare the live feature, execution, and deployment details before committing.
Plan workflow development like software
Visual workflows still need engineering discipline. Before enabling automation, map the input, transformations, external calls, and final side effects. Decide how to handle missing or malformed data, service errors, duplicate events, and partial completion. Keep credentials out of workflow logic, limit access to what each integration needs, and test failure paths as well as the happy path.

Build and validate incrementally
- Start with a narrow workflow and a representative, non-sensitive test case where possible.
- Validate the shape and meaning of data at important boundaries, particularly before a write or external action.
- Exercise errors and incomplete responses from dependent services; define what should stop, retry, or be reviewed.
- For AI-assisted steps, test with representative inputs and decide which outputs need human review before an action proceeds.
- Before enabling production use, review credentials, permissions, expected side effects, and the recovery path if a step fails.
n8n’s site describes testing AI workflows with real data. Use data only when your organization’s privacy, access, and retention requirements allow it; do not treat an advertised test capability as a substitute for those decisions.
Put workflows under source control carefully
n8n’s source-control tutorial says an instance owner or admin must enable and configure the feature. It also makes an important distinction: the version pushed to source control is the current saved version, not necessarily the published version. A deployment process that assumes those are identical can move a different workflow state than intended.
The tutorial describes a flow using a GitHub Action and the n8n API to pull changes after a push to a production or main branch. Exact setup and availability can depend on the n8n version and edition, so follow the current source-control environments tutorial for the instance you operate.
A practical release check
- Have an instance owner or admin configure source control before relying on it.
- Review the saved workflow version that will be pushed; do not assume it is the same as the published version.
- Define who can approve a change and what branch or environment is allowed to trigger a production pull.
- Confirm credentials and environment-specific values are handled appropriately for each environment.
- Test the GitHub Action and API flow on a non-production target before using it for production changes.
Source control records and moves workflow changes; it does not, by itself, prove that a change is safe or that production has the intended state. Keep review, testing, and recovery procedures in the release process.

Check licensing and plan fit before adopting n8n
The n8n repository identifies the Sustainable Use License and n8n Enterprise License. A specific commercial case matters: the official Help Center says hosting and managing clients’ workflows and credentials in your own internal n8n instance requires an Enterprise license. Agencies, consultants, and product teams building a service around n8n should read the current license terms and ask n8n about arrangements that do not match that stated case; this is not a complete legal interpretation of every business model.
n8n’s pricing page indicates that features including named versions, workflow diffs, the public API, and AI Assistant availability vary by plan or deployment. Exact prices and entitlements change, so verify the current n8n pricing and plan details for execution allowances, the features your team needs, deployment eligibility, and team requirements. Do not select a tier based on an old price snippet or assume that a feature is included on every deployment.
When a screenshot API belongs in an n8n workflow
Screenshot capture can be one step in a larger automation: for example, a workflow might request an image of a page and then route the resulting file or link to another system. That is separate from n8n’s core workflow capabilities, and the evidence here does not establish that any particular screenshot service is built into n8n. If your design needs screenshots, verify how the API response, authentication, and failure states fit the workflow before automating it.
For that separate screenshot task, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, and its response headers identify page verdict and billing status. Its documented options include full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, PDF settings, and async jobs. Each capture option can be evaluated independently for the page and output you need.

Or skip the browser setup
Instead of maintaining browser-capture code in a workflow, make one API request. Create an API key and consult the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for current parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshoot workflow decisions before production
A workflow runs but the result is wrong
Inspect the data at each transformation and service boundary. Check assumptions about missing fields, formats, and branching rather than treating a successful run as proof that the output is correct. Add validation before irreversible actions.
A connected service fails or responds inconsistently
Check the service’s authentication, permissions, and expected request and response shape. Decide explicitly whether an error should halt the workflow, be retried, or be sent for review; test that path rather than assuming retries are safe for actions that may create duplicates.

A source-control push does not match production expectations
Confirm the feature was enabled by an instance owner or admin, then compare the saved version with the published version. The source-control tutorial says the push uses the saved version. Verify the branch, GitHub Action, API configuration, and target environment against the current tutorial.

A feature or plan detail is unavailable
Check the live pricing page for the relevant feature and deployment eligibility, and confirm version-specific instructions in the docs. Plan names and entitlements can change; a past plan comparison is not a reliable substitute.
A client-facing hosted service raises a licensing question
If you host and manage clients’ workflows and credentials in your own internal instance, the Help Center identifies that use as requiring Enterprise. For another arrangement, review the current license terms and get clarification from n8n rather than extrapolating from that one case.
Frequently asked questions
Does n8n require coding?
No. n8n describes workflows as usable with little or no code, while JavaScript, Python, custom nodes, and APIs offer routes for work that needs more developer control. How much code a particular workflow needs depends on its integrations and logic.
Is n8n an open-source project?
The repository identifies the Sustainable Use License and n8n Enterprise License. Check the current license text before treating n8n as open source under a particular definition or assuming a commercial use is permitted.
Is n8n suitable for production automation?
It offers deployment and workflow-development routes, but production suitability depends on your own requirements for availability, access control, failure handling, testing, licensing, and operations. The cited official descriptions do not establish independent performance or reliability benchmarks.
