MWC Barcelona 2026 made AI central to telecom strategy: operators and vendors are working to automate networks and turn connectivity, edge computing and network data into services. The event showed a serious industry pivot, not proof that AI has solved the sector’s revenue problem.

What MWC 2026 signaled

MWC Barcelona ran from March 2–5, 2026, and marked the event’s 20th year in Barcelona. GSMA’s theme, “The IQ Era,” captured a change in emphasis: beyond expanding coverage and bandwidth, the industry is pursuing programmable networks that can use software and AI to adapt services and operations. The dates are listed in TechRadar’s event preview; EE Times reported approximately 105,000 attendees from 207 nations, a reported event figure rather than an independently audited count. EE Times’ analysis of the “IQ Era” describes the strategic backdrop.

The distinction matters: AI was not presented only as a feature on phones or a chatbot for customer support. It appeared as a possible operating layer for networks, a way to host or connect AI workloads, and a foundation for services sold to businesses. Those are separate bets, with different buyers and economics. MWC26 made the direction visible; many announcements and ambitions still need to be judged by deployments and commercial results.

Three ways telcos are applying AI

AI for network operations

Operators can use AI to find anomalies, correlate alarms, diagnose faults, forecast maintenance needs, plan capacity, tune traffic, monitor customer experience and manage energy use. These are mostly operational opportunities: their value may come from fewer outages, lower operating costs or more efficient use of existing assets rather than a new customer-facing product.

Automation has degrees. A system that summarizes network telemetry or recommends a fix is not equivalent to one that changes configuration. The closer an AI system gets to executing changes, the more important safeguards become: validated data, bounded permissions, audit logs, rollback, human escalation and testing against failure cases.

Networks for AI workloads

Telecom infrastructure could support AI through connectivity to data centers, edge inference, private networks and services with defined latency or availability. Local processing can be useful when an application needs fast responses, when data should remain near its source, or when transferring it elsewhere is impractical. It is not automatically cheaper or faster overall: centralized cloud capacity may be a better fit when workloads are large, intermittent or tolerant of delay.

GSMA Foundry highlighted inference placement, edge workloads and reducing radio-access-network energy intensity among the commercial directions around MWC26. That is an industry-facing view of opportunity, not evidence that those services already have broad adoption. GSMA Foundry’s MWC26 overview sets out its framing.

Telcos as AI service platforms

The most ambitious model is for operators to expose network capabilities through APIs or sell managed AI infrastructure and enterprise services. Potential ingredients include identity, location, security, quality-of-service controls, private connectivity and governed network data. They could be combined for sectors such as manufacturing, health care, logistics or public services, where reliable connectivity and data handling matter.

But a capability is not yet a product, and a product is not necessarily a profitable business. Operators need a clear buyer, a problem that existing cloud or software providers do not solve as well, and a contract that earns incremental revenue rather than bundling the feature into connectivity at no meaningful premium.

Why the pivot is happening now

Operators have invested heavily in 5G, fiber, cloud-native systems and related infrastructure, but additional capacity has not automatically produced proportional revenue growth. Meanwhile, networks are more complex: they combine equipment and software from multiple suppliers, new deployment models and growing security and energy demands. AI offers a possible way to control that complexity while opening routes into enterprise services.

S&P Global characterizes the strategy as two fronts: agentic AI to operate networks more effectively, and infrastructure and services for the AI economy. Its analysis also points to locality, sovereignty, deterministic performance and operational trust as possible areas where telecom providers could distinguish themselves from hyperscalers. S&P Global’s MWC26 analysis describes that position. It remains a plausible path, not a demonstrated sector-wide financial outcome.

GPUs, CPUs and the economics of telecom AI

The debate is not simply about which processor is faster. The relevant choice depends on workload, location, demand patterns, power limits, software compatibility, utilization and the operator’s tolerance for supplier dependence.

Approach Potential advantage Key question
GPU and accelerated computing Can accelerate suitable AI inference workloads, including those placed closer to users or network infrastructure. Is demand dense and steady enough to justify hardware, power and integration costs?
CPU-oriented computing Can suit mixed or irregular workloads and existing software built for general-purpose systems. Can it meet the workload’s performance needs without costly optimization or excessive resource use?
Purpose-built telecom silicon Can be tailored to network tasks and support a more controlled software and hardware stack. Does the efficiency gain outweigh reduced portability or flexibility?

EE Times reported that Nvidia sees cellular access points as potential future infrastructure for AI inference. It also reported that Nokia aligned with Nvidia and backed the strategy with a $1 billion investment; that figure is attributed here to EE Times, not presented as an independently confirmed company disclosure. The same report characterized Ericsson as emphasizing purpose-built silicon and software independence. That is a strategic contrast, not evidence that Ericsson rejects GPUs or that one approach is universally superior. EE Times’ post-event report covers these positions.

In practice, networks are likely to use heterogeneous compute: CPUs for some general tasks, accelerators for workloads that benefit from them, and specialized silicon where predictable performance or efficiency warrants it. The business case should account for the full lifecycle—hardware, power and cooling, software integration, model operations, utilization, resilience and supplier terms—not just peak processing performance.

Agentic AI: from recommendations to network control

“Agentic AI” can describe systems that interpret operational data, reason through a task and take or propose actions. In network operations, the difference between levels of autonomy is material:

  1. Analytics: surface patterns or likely faults for an operator to investigate.
  2. Assistance: suggest a diagnosis or configuration change, leaving the decision to a person.
  3. Approved remediation: prepare or execute a change after a human authorizes it.
  4. Closed-loop operation: detect a condition and make bounded changes automatically, with monitoring and rollback.
  5. Broader autonomous coordination: multiple systems manage work across network domains, where permissions, interoperability and failure containment become harder.

A demonstration of diagnosis does not establish safe autonomous control of routing, radio settings, security policies or customer entitlements. The MWC26 Agentic AI Summit framed agentic systems as a possible route to new services and monetization while acknowledging adoption and scaling challenges; that program framing is not evidence of realized revenue. The summit description provides its stated focus.

Open Telco AI and the interoperability problem

General-purpose models do not automatically understand network terminology, equipment behavior, operator procedures or the consequences of a mistaken change. Telco-grade systems need access to relevant data and workflows, ways to evaluate performance on telecom tasks, and controls suitable for critical infrastructure. Multi-vendor networks make those needs harder: a model or tool that works with one supplier’s data may not transfer cleanly to another.

GSMA launched Open Telco AI on March 2, 2026, to coordinate operators, vendors, developers and academia around telco-grade AI, including collaboration on reliability, interoperability and domain-specific evaluation. GSMA’s launch announcement said its AI Telco Troubleshooting Challenge had attracted more than 1,000 registrations. That is a registration count reported by GSMA, not a measure of production deployments or successful outcomes. The launch announcement describes the initiative.

“Open” here should not be taken to mean that all software, models or weights are open source. The practical test is what participants can share, test and use: common benchmarks, compatible interfaces, governed data access and reproducible safety evaluation would help address fragmentation even if some components remain proprietary.

For each proposal, ask:

  • What is actually available? Separate a roadmap or show-floor demonstration from a trial, a commercial offer and a deployment at scale.
  • Who is the named customer and budget owner? Network, IT and business teams may have different priorities and purchasing authority.
  • What is the measurable benefit? Look for incremental revenue, lower operating expense, avoided capital spending or a service-level improvement that customers will pay for.
  • Can the system work across vendors? Portability matters when operators depend on equipment and software from several suppliers.
  • Does the location matter? Edge or sovereign hosting needs a latency, privacy, resilience or regulatory case strong enough to justify its cost.
  • What happens when it fails? Look for human oversight where needed, auditability, security testing, fallback behavior and recovery plans.
  • Will the economics hold at realistic utilization? Include energy, integration, monitoring and ongoing model costs, not just the price of compute.

MWC Barcelona’s article on turning telcos into AI operators presents governed data and network capabilities as potential billable products. It is an industry thesis, not neutral proof of customer adoption. The article’s proposal describes that model.

Sovereignty, security and the road to 6G

Where AI runs affects more than latency. Operators handling sensitive or critical network data must weigh data residency, privacy, infrastructure security, supplier exposure and the ability to audit automated decisions. Dependence on a particular cloud, model or accelerator may offer scale but create lock-in or supply-chain risk. Local or sovereign infrastructure can offer more control, but may cost more and require the operator to take on additional operational responsibility.

AI also informs discussion of 6G architecture, including radio design, orchestration, spectrum use and sensing. That does not mean commercial 6G arrived at MWC26. 5G remains the production foundation; standards, interoperability and business economics for future networks remain unsettled. In this context, 6G is a research and positioning horizon, not a near-term deployment claim. EE Times’ “IQ Era” analysis discusses the broader 6G and sovereignty context.

What would prove the pivot is working?

The strongest evidence will be operational and commercial, not rhetorical: production deployments with named customers, quantified savings or revenue, workload-specific performance, workable multi-vendor integration and safe failure handling. Operators also need to show that AI products earn revenue beyond existing connectivity bundles—or that internal automation reduces costs enough to justify the investment.

MWC26 showed telecom companies repositioning AI from an add-on to a core part of network strategy. Whether that becomes a durable business depends on execution: operators must make increasingly complex infrastructure more economical while offering customers a specific advantage worth paying for. The event marked a pivot in direction, not a verdict on its returns.
