Verdict: The six-word subject line and Elon Musk’s February 2025 post were real, but the headline overstates them. Federal employees were asked to summarize their work in five bullet points. Musk said nonresponse would be “taken as a resignation”—not that NASA employees would automatically be fired. NASA personnel were reportedly told to wait for guidance before replying.
This is a historical February 2025 episode, not a current NASA employment alert.
What was the “six-word email”?
The six words were the subject line: “What did you do last week?” The reported message asked federal workers to reply with five bullet points describing their accomplishments and to copy their manager. The details come from contemporaneous reporting by Indian Defence Review.

The request was framed as a work report, while the employment consequence was stated separately in Musk’s public post.

What did Elon Musk actually say?
On February 24, 2025, Musk wrote that federal employees would receive an email asking what they had accomplished during the previous week and said that failure to respond would be “taken as a resignation.”
- He referred to federal employees generally, not NASA workers alone.
- He used the word resignation, not firing.
- He did not explain a legal mechanism that would automatically end every employee’s job.
- “Jobs on the line” and “will be fired” are headline interpretations, not quotations from the post.
A resignation is ordinarily an employee’s departure; a firing is an employer-initiated termination. Treating those terms as interchangeable changes the meaning of the statement.
Was this an official NASA order?
The available material does not establish that NASA issued the government-wide message as a NASA-specific firing order. The reported request applied across the federal workforce, with NASA personnel among the employees who received or were expected to receive it.

- Authentic NASA Spacecraft Replica – Detailed 1/300 scale model of the legendary Space Shuttle Atlantis featuring realistic NASA markings and spacecraft detailing.
- Premium Die-Cast Metal Construction – Crafted from durable die-cast metal for a high-quality collectible feel and long-lasting display value.
- Historic Space Exploration Collectible – Honors the iconic reusable orbital spacecraft that helped shape modern human spaceflight history.
- Includes Display Stand – Comes complete with a plastic stand for easy and dynamic display on desks, shelves, or collector cabinets.
- Designed for Adult Collectors – Recommended for ages 14 and up; ideal for NASA enthusiasts, space exploration fans, and aerospace collectors alike.
NASA’s workforce also includes both civil servants and contractors. A message directed at federal employees would not necessarily apply identically to contractors, and agencies could issue their own instructions about how employees should respond.
The Office of Personnel Management had announced on January 23, 2025, that it was testing a capability to communicate with civilian federal employees from one address. That announcement is separate from the later work-reporting message and does not reproduce its text: OPM’s government-wide email communication announcement.
Why were NASA employees reportedly told to pause?
According to Bloomberg reporting relayed by the contemporary article, NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate advised employees to wait before responding. A message associated with Johnson Space Center reportedly cautioned employees against sending proprietary or pre-decisional information to unauthorized recipients. The Bloomberg report is available at Bloomberg.

- Resin Construction: Crafted from resin with intricate detailing, creating a distinctive collectible model for display.
- Display Stand Included: Comes with a high quality display stand that will elevate your aviation collection.

Those details should be understood as attributed secondary reporting rather than a publicly posted NASA directive. They also illustrate a practical problem with a broad reporting request: employees working with classified, proprietary, export-controlled or pre-decisional material may need agency-approved channels and carefully limited descriptions of their work.

Did refusing to answer legally mean resignation or firing?
The sources do not establish that every NASA employee—or every federal employee—was automatically fired or legally resigned merely by failing to answer. Musk’s post shows what he said would happen administratively; it does not, by itself, prove that each agency adopted an enforceable personnel procedure.
Whether silence could support a personnel action would depend on the employee’s status, agency instructions, applicable civil-service rules and any formal notice or adjudication that followed. Employees on leave, working unusual schedules or assigned sensitive duties could also face different practical issues when asked for a routine five-bullet summary.

The safest factual description is therefore: Musk said nonresponse would be treated as resignation; the available evidence does not show automatic firing of NASA employees for failing to reply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How was this different from OPM’s January resignation offer?
Two separate federal communications are easy to confuse.
| Communication | What it asked | What the source said about nonresponse |
|---|---|---|
| January 28, 2025 deferred-resignation offer | Employees who wanted to participate were instructed to reply with “Resign.” | OPM described participation as voluntary and said there was no penalty for not responding to that offer. OPM’s original email |
| “What did you do last week?” work-reporting request | Five bullet points summarizing recent accomplishments, with a manager copied. | Musk publicly said nonresponse would be treated as resignation; the sources do not establish an automatic legal termination process. |
The deferred-resignation offer was not the six-word work-reporting email. Combining them creates a misleading “resignation email” narrative.

Timeline of the episode
- January 23, 2025: OPM announced a test of government-wide email communications to civilian federal employees.
- January 28, 2025: OPM sent the separate voluntary deferred-resignation offer.
- February 22–24, 2025: The five-things work-reporting messages circulated; Musk posted his statement on February 24.
- February 23–25, 2025: NASA personnel were reportedly told to pause while guidance was clarified.
- August 8, 2025: OPM said it had ended its centralized five-things reporting process.
What happened to the reporting system?
In an August 8, 2025 statement, OPM said it had ended the centralized five-things process. Managers could still request similar updates directly if they found them useful, but OPM would no longer operate a central inbox for the practice: OPM’s statement.
That later announcement is why the February 2025 message should not be presented as an active government-wide requirement in 2026.
What the headline gets right—and wrong
- Real: A six-word subject line, a five-bullet work summary request and Musk’s February 24 post.
- Misleading: Saying Musk announced that NASA staff “will be fired.” His quoted wording was that nonresponse would be treated as resignation.
- Unestablished: That NASA employees were automatically dismissed for ignoring the message.
- Too narrow: The statement concerned federal employees broadly, not NASA alone.
- No longer current: OPM said the centralized reporting process ended on August 8, 2025.
NASA said in February 2025 that it had about 18,000 civil-service employees, alongside a much larger contractor workforce; that context does not mean every person working for NASA received identical instructions.
