Mullvad VPN is a strong fit for people who value an account that does not require an email address, straightforward monthly pricing, and privacy-focused tools. The trade-offs are concrete: an account covers up to five devices, port forwarding is unavailable, and streaming access has been inconsistent in an independent reviewer’s tests. Whether Mullvad is right for you depends on which of those points matters most.
What Mullvad costs and what you get
Mullvad’s terms list a direct price of €5 per month when purchasing from mullvad.net. The terms were last updated on January 20, 2026. Prices through the App Store or an official reseller may differ, so check the seller’s price before paying.

How Mullvad’s account and privacy model works
Mullvad says it does not ask for personal information, including an email address, to create an account; instead, the account is identified by a number. This reduces the personal information needed to sign up, but it should not be read as a guarantee of anonymity for every payment. Mullvad’s terms note that some payment processors handle personal data to provide their own services.
Mullvad also says it does not log activity. A VPN can mask your IP address from destination sites and route your connection through the VPN operator, which shifts some trust from your internet provider to that operator. It does not make you anonymous to every party or prevent tracking through accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, or information you choose to share.
Security and connection features
Mullvad lists several privacy and connection features on its VPN product page. These are provider-described capabilities, not proof that the service defeats every form of surveillance, tracking, or censorship.
- DAITA: Short for “Defense Against AI-guided Traffic Analysis.” It is designed to address traffic-analysis threats, but the effectiveness of DAITA itself was outside the scope of the 2024 app audit discussed below.
- Quantum-resistant tunnels: Mullvad presents this as an option on supported platforms. Availability depends on platform support.
- Multihop: Routes a connection through multiple servers rather than just one.
- DNS through the tunnel: Mullvad says DNS queries pass through the encrypted VPN tunnel.
- Obfuscation: Mullvad lists methods intended to help users bypass VPN blocking.
These options may be useful if they match your needs, but their presence alone does not establish protection against every adversary or blocked network.
What the 2024 app audit establishes—and what it does not
X41 D-Sec’s 2024 security assessment covered specific releases: Android 2024.8-beta1, iOS 2024.8, and desktop 2024.6. Its findings overview records issues at high, medium, and low severity, along with other observations. It is not accurate to describe the report as a clean bill of health.
Rank #2
- PRIVACY-FIRST VPN: This 6-month Mullvad VPN code gives you half a year of privacy protection without monthly renewals. Mullvad is based in Sweden, a country with strong privacy protections and no mandatory data retention laws for VPN providers.
- ZERO LOGS & NO PERSONAL DATA: Mullvad collects no activity logs and asks for no personal information. Not even your email address. Your IP address is replaced with one of ours, so your location and activity remain private.
- COMPATIBLE DEVICES: Compatible with iOS, Android, Windows 10+, macOS, and Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora). Supports the WireGuard protocol. One subscription, five devices running simultaneously.
- EASY TO USE: We designed Mullvad VPN service to be straightforward. Simply download the app, enter your activation code, and connect. No complicated setup. No account tied to your identity.
- EXTERNALLY AUDITED: Mullvad undergoes regular independent security audits, so you don't have to take our word for it. Your traffic is encrypted to the highest standards. The laws relevant to us as a VPN provider based in Sweden make our location a safe place for us and your privacy.
The report explicitly excludes DAITA’s effectiveness from its scope and cautions that a security assessment cannot rule out weaknesses being discovered later. Its conclusions apply to the releases and scope it assessed, not automatically to every later app version or every aspect of the service. Read the audit report for its scope and findings.

Streaming
Security.org’s review, last updated July 27, 2026, reports that streaming access was hit or miss in its testing. That is the reviewer’s result, not a guarantee of what every user will experience; streaming services can change how they detect VPN connections.

Port forwarding
Mullvad’s official FAQ says port forwarding is not supported. This matters if you need incoming connections for peer-to-peer hosting, self-hosting, or other services that rely on an open inbound port.
Setup and settings
Security.org describes some settings as requiring more manual effort and characterizes the learning curve as steeper than for a service designed around a more guided experience. If you mainly want a VPN for simple, reliable streaming access, those usability and connection trade-offs may weigh more heavily than Mullvad’s privacy-focused design.
Who should choose Mullvad?
- Consider it if you value sign-up without an email address, flat direct monthly pricing, and a set of privacy-oriented connection features.
- Look elsewhere or check carefully first if you need port forwarding, want more than five devices on one account, or depend on consistently working streaming access.
- Compare your payment route if refund eligibility matters, because cash and cryptocurrency purchases are excluded from the stated guarantee and app-store or reseller purchases follow the seller’s refund process.
Does Mullvad pay for referrals?
Mullvad’s policy on reviews, advertising, influencers, and affiliates, last updated May 15, 2024, says: “We do not have affiliates, and do not pay for influencers.” The policy also says it does not pay for links to its website. You should not expect an affiliate discount or referral arrangement when following a Mullvad link.
