In September 2023, Microsoft’s MSN removed several malformed or apparently copied articles from the Race Track publishing partner, yet new Race Track stories continued appearing through MSN afterward. Futurism documented the takedowns and examples of later articles; Microsoft’s own policy separately requires human review, original work and accountability for AI-assisted publishing. The public record shows a moderation failure, but not the internal cause of each removal or why syndication continued.
What MSN removed
Victor Tangermann of Futurism reported on September 14, 2023, that MSN had deleted multiple Race Track articles after readers noticed text that was incoherent, copied or factually mangled.
The Brandon Hunter article
One removed item concerned former NBA player Brandon Hunter. Futurism described the copy as garbled and apparently AI-generated, and said it appeared to have been produced by an algorithm that plagiarized a TMZ Sports blog.
Other malformed sports stories
The same report identified Race Track coverage of Kevin Porter Jr.’s arrest and a story that changed NFL analyst Joy Taylor’s name to “Pleasure Taylor.” These examples were presented as evidence of poor-quality automated or insufficiently reviewed publishing, not as the result of a disclosed Microsoft audit.

Earlier MSN examples
Futurism also pointed to an MSN Ottawa travel guide that recommended tourists visit a local food bank. MSN published and then deleted that guide. The report additionally described other Race Track stories that appeared to copy or distort existing work.
New Race Track stories still appeared afterward
The deletions did not end the flow of Race Track material through MSN, according to Futurism’s account. The outlet found later examples including:

- A Sergio Perez Formula 1 story that referred to Red Bull as “Purple Bull.”
“Continued” here means that new partner content was still being syndicated or displayed by MSN after the reported takedowns. It does not establish how many articles were affected, how long each remained online, or whether every item came from the same automated process.
What is documented, and what remains an inference

This distinction matters: visible text, publication history and takedowns are reported events; the mechanism that produced them is an inference unless Microsoft or the publisher discloses it.

What Microsoft’s MSN AI policy requires
Microsoft’s MSN AI content policy sets a stricter standard than the examples described by Futurism. It prohibits unreviewed AI-generated content except for limited exceptions and defines AI-assisted content as material that receives meaningful human review or intervention. The policy also says partners must meet professional publishing standards.
Human review and accountability
The policy states: “Unreviewed AI-generated content (AIGC) and ‘generated autonomously by AI’ refer to the generation of an output by an AI system or model without downstream human review or intervention.” Microsoft recommends disclosing AI assistance and using an accountable human byline.

Originality and anti-plagiarism rules
Microsoft expressly prohibits plagiarism and the use of AI to rephrase an existing published work for republication under another byline or brand. Its policy says: “Any prompt submitted into AI tools to create content (video, text, audio or in combination) that plagiarizes current published works is prohibited.”
Enforcement options
Microsoft says suspected unreviewed AI-generated content may be demoted or removed. Partners can also be suspended or terminated. Those provisions describe the platform’s stated rules; they do not show which specific sanction Race Track received in this episode.

Why the episode matters
A policy can be clear while moderation is uneven
The Race Track examples illustrate the gap between formal standards and what reaches a distribution platform. A policy can require original reporting and human sign-off while defective material remains visible long enough for readers to find it.
Syndication creates an additional checkpoint
When a partner’s article is distributed by a large platform, responsibility is shared across production, editorial review and platform moderation. A takedown addresses a discovered item; it does not automatically prevent the next item from entering the feed.
Errors can be obvious without proving the process
“Purple Bull,” “Pleasure Taylor” and the food-bank recommendation are readily recognizable quality failures. They support scrutiny of editorial controls, but they cannot by themselves identify whether a language model, a human rewrite, a template or a combination caused each error.
How to read claims about this incident
- Treat the September 14, 2023 Futurism report as documentation of examples, publication status and observed deletions.
- Separate reported similarities to earlier articles from a formal plagiarism determination.
- Do not turn Microsoft’s general policy into proof that every cited story violated a specific rule; the public evidence does not include an article-by-article enforcement decision.
- Do not infer a prevalence rate. No independently published dataset or numerical rate establishes how often comparable articles appeared.
The bottom line
MSN removed several Race Track articles that readers and journalists identified as incoherent, misleading or apparently copied, but new Race Track material continued to appear afterward. Microsoft’s published rules call for human oversight, originality, disclosure and accountable bylines, with removal or partner sanctions available for violations. The incident demonstrates that stated AI-content standards are only as effective as the review and enforcement systems applying them; it does not, on the available evidence, reveal the private cause of each moderation failure.
