MSInfo32, also called System Information, is still included with Windows 11. If it will not open, first try launching %windir%System32msinfo32.exe directly; this helps distinguish a broken Start-menu or search shortcut from a problem with the utility itself. If the window still fails, you can test report generation, check the executable, and then work through Windows repair and conflict checks.
MSInfo32 gathers details about hardware, drivers, Windows components, services, and the software environment. The steps below apply to Windows 11 Home and Pro; a work- or school-managed PC may also be subject to administrator policies.
Identify what “not opening” looks like
The symptom helps narrow down which part to test. Nothing happening from Start search may indicate a search or shortcut issue; an error or immediate exit may point to a launch or system problem; a window that stays blank or loads indefinitely may involve a component or information provider. These are clues, not definitive diagnoses.

- An error or immediate close: Try an elevated terminal, then check Event Viewer if the problem persists.
- A blank or stuck window: Test report generation and consider a clean boot.
- An export fails: Confirm the destination folder exists and that your account can write to it.
- It works only as administrator: Elevation can improve the accuracy of some driver information, but it does not by itself identify the cause of a launch problem.
In Safe Mode, MSInfo32 can run, but Microsoft says its hardware information is limited; missing hardware details there do not establish that a device is absent or defective. See Microsoft’s MSInfo32 overview.

Try three ways to launch MSInfo32
- Start search: Open Start, search for System Information, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator for this test.
- Run dialog: Press Win + R, enter
msinfo32, and press Enter. Microsoft lists this as a way to open the tool in its Windows system configuration tools guide. - Direct executable: Press Win + R, enter
%windir%System32msinfo32.exe, and press Enter. You can also paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar.
If the full path works but Start search does not, the executable itself can launch; the failure may instead involve the search result, shortcut, or Windows shell. That is a diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed explanation.
Test report generation without relying on the window
Microsoft documents /report for a plain-text report and /nfo for an NFO report. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run one of these commands:
Save a text report
msinfo32 /report "%USERPROFILE%Desktopmsinfo-report.txt"Save an NFO report
msinfo32 /nfo "%USERPROFILE%Desktopmsinfo-report.nfo"Use the full executable path and request a smaller report

- A report is created while the window remains unavailable: The reporting path works, so the fault may be specific to the graphical window or its display behavior.
- “Not recognized” appears: Try the full-path command above; if it also fails, check whether the file exists.
- “Access denied” appears: Open the terminal as administrator or choose a folder your account can write to.
- Report generation hangs: A provider, driver, service, or Windows component could be involved. This result alone does not identify which one.
Check whether the executable exists
Run these checks in Command Prompt or PowerShell:
where msinfo32

A file listing or True confirms the file exists at that location. If it is missing, do not download a replacement from an unofficial site; continue with Windows repair instead.
Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
If the executable is missing, Windows reports application errors, or the direct launch and report tests fail, check Windows system files. Microsoft recommends installing available Windows updates and restarting before starting this repair sequence. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM first, wait for it to finish, and then run SFC:

sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows image used by system-file repair; SFC checks protected system files and attempts to repair corruption. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance. Restart Windows when the checks finish, then test MSInfo32 again.

Successful completion does not guarantee that every MSInfo32 launch problem is fixed. These tools are aimed at Windows image and protected-file problems, not every profile, policy, startup conflict, or display issue. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run it again; if problems remain, continue with the checks below.

If the failure is intermittent, began after installing software, or occurs only during a normal Windows session, a clean boot can help test whether a third-party service or startup app is involved. Microsoft describes System Configuration as a troubleshooting tool in its Windows system configuration tools guide.
- Press Win + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and only then disable the remaining third-party services for the test.
- Open the Startup tab and use its Task Manager link to disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart Windows and test MSInfo32.
- After testing, return to System Configuration and restore Normal startup; re-enable the startup items you need.
Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately. If MSInfo32 works after a clean boot, a third-party service or startup program is a likely contributor, but the test does not name the specific one. If it still fails, a normal startup app is less likely to be the sole cause. Microsoft warns that inappropriate System Configuration changes can destabilize Windows.

Inspect Event Viewer and test another account
Look for an event at the time of the failure
- Press Win + X and open Event Viewer.
- Check Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System.
- Find events recorded at the time MSInfo32 failed. Note the faulting application or module, exception code, event ID, and timestamp.
Event Viewer helps gather diagnostic details; an event is not an automatic repair instruction. Do not delete logs or change registry settings just because an entry appears. Microsoft includes Event Viewer among its Windows diagnostic tools.
Compare with another Windows account
If practical, sign in to another account on the PC and run msinfo32. If it works there, the original account’s profile, permissions, or user-specific configuration may be involved. If it fails in both accounts, a system-wide component, policy, or service becomes more plausible. These comparisons are diagnostic inferences, not proof of a particular cause.

On a work- or school-managed PC, application control or endpoint security may restrict diagnostic tools. Ask the organization’s administrator to check applicable policies rather than trying to bypass them. Do not permanently disable antivirus or endpoint protection; if a security product is suspected, follow its documented troubleshooting process or contact its administrator.

Use a Windows alternative while MSInfo32 is unavailable
- System summary in a terminal: Run
systeminfoin Command Prompt. It prints Windows configuration and related system details, but it is not the same graphical interface or report format as MSInfo32. - Windows Settings: Check Settings → System → About for basic device and Windows details. Other relevant information may appear under System, Storage, Windows Update, or Recovery. Labels and available pages can vary by Windows 11 release and device.
- Graphics and audio: Run
dxdiagto open DirectX Diagnostic Tool and review display, sound, driver, and DirectX details; it can save a diagnostic report. - Device status and drivers: Run
devmgmt.mscto open Device Manager and inspect device status, driver properties, or available rollback options. - Targeted PowerShell queries: Run these in PowerShell for selected system details:
Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem
Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOSThese alternatives provide selected information; they do not reproduce MSInfo32’s complete software-environment report.
When to stop troubleshooting MSInfo32 alone
Escalate beyond this utility if other built-in Windows tools are also failing, DISM or SFC report unresolved problems, the PC has recurring crashes, or Event Viewer shows repeated application faults. A Windows recovery option or in-place repair may then be more appropriate than repeating MSInfo32-specific tests. On an organization-managed device, involve the administrator before recovery or configuration changes.
