MSI’s Intel 800-series motherboard range now covers premium Z890 boards and more compact B860M models for Intel Core Ultra desktop processors (Series 2). The lineup is not one single launch: MSI introduced Z890 in October 2024, followed with B860 and H810 models on January 6, 2025, and has continued adding models since then.
For buyers, the central choice is straightforward: choose Z890 for CPU-tuning features, more expansion, additional storage, and premium connectivity; choose B860M for a smaller, simpler, and generally more affordable LGA1851 system.
What MSI announced
MSI’s Intel 800-series expansion happened in stages. The company first announced its Z890 motherboard family in October 2024 for Intel Core Ultra desktop processors. On January 6, 2025, MSI showcased its B860 and H810 lineup for mainstream users, gamers, and creators.

The current range extends beyond those initial announcements. MSI’s product and support pages list multiple Z890, B860, and B860M boards, with specifications varying substantially by model and region. “B860M” generally identifies a micro-ATX board; it is not a different CPU socket or processor family from standard B860.

All of the boards discussed here use the LGA1851 socket, support Intel Core Ultra Processors (Series 2), and use DDR5 memory. Confirm the exact processor and BIOS requirement on MSI’s CPU-support database before buying, particularly when purchasing older retail inventory.
MSI Z890 motherboard families
MSI’s Z890 range is divided across its MEG, MPG, MAG, and PRO families. The product tier indicates the intended feature level, but the exact rear I/O, networking, M.2 layout, and expansion configuration still require checking on the individual model page.
MEG: flagship enthusiast boards
Examples include the MEG Z890 GODLIKE, MEG Z890 ACE, and MEG Z890 UNIFY-X. These boards target enthusiasts building high-end gaming, workstation, or heavily tuned systems. They typically provide more substantial power delivery and cooling, additional expansion, premium storage support, and higher-end connectivity than mainstream models.

Those features can be valuable for creators using fast external storage, professional peripherals, or multiple high-bandwidth devices, but they add little value to a conventional single-GPU gaming PC.
MPG: premium gaming and creator boards
The MPG Z890 CARBON WIFI, MPG Z890 EDGE TI WIFI, and compact MPG Z890I EDGE TI WIFI represent MSI’s premium gaming and creator segment. Depending on the model, buyers may find Wi-Fi 7, 5G or 10G networking, PCIe 5.0 M.2 storage, Thunderbolt 4, and extensive USB connectivity.
The Z890I model is an important reminder that Z890 is not limited to full-size ATX boards. However, an ITX design trades expansion and DIMM capacity for a smaller footprint, so it should be selected for a specific compact case rather than assumed to be equivalent to an ATX board.

MAG: performance-focused gaming
The MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI is aimed at buyers who want a strong gaming platform without moving to MSI’s most expensive MEG or MPG designs. Its value depends on the specific configuration and price, but the MAG tier generally makes more sense for a high-performance gaming build than a flagship board whose extra connectivity will remain unused.
PRO: workstation, creator, and value-oriented options
MSI lists models including the PRO Z890-S WIFI PZ, PRO Z890-S WIFI, PRO Z890-P WIFI, and PRO Z890-A WIFI. These boards are intended for users who prioritize practical expansion, productivity features, and a less aggressive design over flagship extras.
Even within the PRO family, the specifications are not interchangeable. Check the individual board’s M.2 count, USB speeds, networking, display outputs, Wi-Fi hardware, and power-delivery design before making a purchase.
MSI B860M options for compact systems
B860M boards use the same LGA1851 platform as Z890 but place the chipset on a micro-ATX motherboard. Their smaller size can simplify a compact gaming or creator build, although it usually means fewer PCIe slots, DIMM slots, headers, and M.2 connectors than a larger premium board.
MAG B860M MORTAR WIFI
The MAG B860M MORTAR WIFI is MSI’s higher-tier micro-ATX option. MSI describes it with a 12-phase Duet Rail Power System using 60A DrMOS. Its CES 2025 overview specifies three M.2 slots, including one PCIe 5.0 slot and two PCIe 4.0 slots.
It also highlights Wi-Fi 7, 5G LAN, a Flash BIOS button, Clear CMOS button, EZ Debug LED, and pre-installed I/O shielding. That combination makes the MORTAR WIFI a sensible compact choice for a powerful single-GPU system that still needs multiple SSDs or faster networking.

PRO B860M-A WIFI
The PRO B860M-A WIFI is positioned toward productivity and value-focused builds. Available specification material identifies PCIe 5.0 support, DDR5, tool-free M.2 installation, and a mixture of USB 5Gbps ports.
Because retail configurations and rear I/O can differ by market, verify the exact regional product page or datasheet before treating these features as a complete specification.
B860M GAMING WIFI
MSI’s current datasheet for the B860M GAMING WIFI lists:
- LGA1851 support for Intel Core Ultra Processors (Series 2).
- One PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and one PCIe 4.0 x4 slot.
- Two DIMM slots with dual-channel DDR5 support.
- Vendor-rated memory support up to 9066+ MT/s overclocked, depending on the kit, CPU, BIOS, and stability.
- One PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot and one PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot.
- Four SATA 6Gbps ports.
- 5G LAN, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4.
- USB 20Gbps Type-C and USB 10Gbps Type-C connectivity.
This is a compact board with unusually strong headline connectivity, but its two-DIMM and two-M.2 layout makes its limits clear. It is a better fit for one GPU and one or two SSDs than for a storage-heavy workstation.
B860M GAMING PLUS WIFI
The B860M GAMING PLUS WIFI is a separate model and should not be assumed to share the B860M GAMING WIFI’s exact port, audio, wireless, storage, or expansion specification. Consult the specific MSI listing for the market where the board will be purchased.

Intel’s B860 platform supports memory overclocking. MSI also describes B860 as offering 24 PCIe lanes, compared with 16 for H810. That does not make B860M equivalent to every Z890 board: the motherboard’s physical layout, power delivery, firmware options, and onboard connectivity remain decisive.

The useful distinction is therefore not “fast Z890 versus slow B860M.” A well-equipped B860M board can be entirely adequate for a powerful gaming system. Z890 earns its premium when the buyer needs more expansion, more storage, advanced tuning, stronger connectivity, or a larger board with more headers and slots.
MSI’s EZ DIY features
Across selected models, MSI emphasizes features intended to reduce installation and troubleshooting friction:
- EZ PCIe Release and EZ PCIe Clip II: simplify graphics-card removal, particularly when the GPU sits close to the case side panel or CPU cooler.
- EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II and EZ M.2 Clip II: reduce the need for small screws when installing or removing M.2 drives and heatsinks.
- Pre-installed I/O shielding: makes motherboard installation easier.
- EZ Debug LED: provides basic clues when the system fails to boot.
- Flash BIOS button: allows BIOS updating without a supported CPU installed where the particular board implements the feature.
- Supplemental PCIe power: MSI says this is intended to support high-power GPU use in gaming and AI-computing systems. It should not be treated as a guarantee of higher GPU performance.
- Extended heatsinks and thermal pads: are intended to assist VRM and component cooling.
These features improve convenience, but they do not make every board identical. Confirm their presence on the exact model before buying.
What to check before buying
- CPU and BIOS: Search the exact motherboard on MSI’s CPU-support page. Support status and required BIOS versions can change as processors are released.
- Memory: Check the qualified memory list where possible. Speeds marked “OC,” including figures such as 9066+ MT/s, are vendor-rated overclocked targets—not guaranteed plug-and-play speeds.
- M.2 sharing: Determine whether populating an M.2 slot disables SATA ports or another PCIe slot.
- USB-C capability: Verify whether a USB-C port provides 5Gbps, 10Gbps, or 20Gbps data, and whether it supports video output or data only.
- Networking: Do not infer the LAN speed or Wi-Fi standard from the chipset name. Confirm whether the board has 2.5G, 5G, or 10G Ethernet and whether Wi-Fi hardware is included.
- Case fit: Confirm micro-ATX, ATX, or ITX compatibility, plus CPU-cooler, GPU, radiator, and cable-clearance requirements.
- Expansion: Count the slots and headers required for capture cards, sound cards, add-in storage, USB expansion, and other devices before choosing a compact board.
- Regional SKU: Retail names, rear I/O, wireless modules, and bundled accessories may differ by country.
Which MSI tier makes sense?
- Choose MEG or MPG Z890 for enthusiast tuning, several high-speed SSDs, professional connectivity, multiple expansion cards, or a premium Core Ultra workstation.
- Choose MAG Z890 for high-end gaming when ATX expansion and stronger connectivity matter but flagship features are unnecessary.
- Choose MAG B860M MORTAR WIFI for a compact performance build requiring robust power delivery, three M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7, and 5G LAN.
- Choose PRO B860M-A WIFI for a practical productivity or value-oriented micro-ATX system, after verifying the regional specification.
- Choose B860M GAMING WIFI or GAMING PLUS WIFI for a compact gaming build, but compare their exact memory, storage, audio, wireless, and rear-I/O specifications rather than relying on the shared “Gaming” name.
Availability and pricing
MSI’s Z890 store page and B860 store page are the appropriate starting points for current availability. Prices and promotions vary by country, retailer, inventory, and date; figures shown on a category page should not be assigned to a specific model without opening that model’s listing.
Likewise, a promotional document mentioning Steam-code values does not establish that a promotion is active in every market. Treat any offer as valid only when its dates, region, participating model, and retailer are confirmed.

MSI’s Intel 800-series expansion gives Core Ultra desktop buyers a broad choice rather than a single replacement for older boards. Z890 is the right platform when expansion, storage, enthusiast tuning, premium networking, Thunderbolt, or sustained heavy workloads justify a larger and more expensive motherboard. B860M is the more practical route for most compact single-GPU systems, provided its smaller number of slots, DIMMs, and M.2 connectors matches the build.
The safest purchase is not necessarily the most expensive board. Match the exact MSI model to the CPU’s support status, required BIOS, memory kit, SSD layout, network speed, and case—and verify every headline feature on the regional datasheet.
