MSI introduced the Claw A8 BZ2EM at Computex 2025 as its first AMD-powered Claw handheld. It combines AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor and Radeon 890M integrated graphics with an 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, 24GB of LPDDR5x memory, a 1TB SSD, and an unusually large 80Wh battery.
The hardware is aimed at enthusiasts who want a large-screen Windows gaming handheld rather than a lightweight, console-style device. The main catch is price: as of August 16, 2026, the MSI US Store listed the Claw A8 BZ2EM-070US at $1,299 and showed it in stock. Earlier US listings reported $1,149, so buyers should check the exact SKU and retailer before purchasing.
What is the MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM?
The Claw A8 BZ2EM is a Windows 11 Home gaming handheld PC. It can run Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and other Windows software, but it is not a closed-console platform with the simplicity of a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck running SteamOS.

MSI first showed the AMD-powered Claw A8 at Computex 2025. Early announcement coverage did not include finalized market pricing or availability, but the product is now listed through MSI’s US store.

MSI lists several BZ2EM model numbers, including BZ2EM-065US, BZ2EM-070US, and BZ2EM-077US. Their core specifications are listed as the same, but color, accessories, warranty, charger, availability, and regional pricing may vary. Confirm the exact model before ordering.
What the Ryzen Z2 Extreme means for gaming
The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is a handheld-oriented AMD processor with integrated Radeon graphics. The Radeon 890M is not a discrete GPU, so it shares system memory and power with the CPU. That makes the Claw A8’s performance highly dependent on the selected power mode, game settings, drivers, cooling, and memory behavior.

The reported lead was approximately 8.5% at 17W and about 6% at 30W. Those figures come from specific test conditions and should not be treated as a universal ranking against every AMD or Intel handheld.
The 24GB memory configuration is useful because Windows and the integrated GPU draw from the same pool. It can reduce the likelihood of memory shortages, particularly in modern games, but it does not automatically deliver a proportional frame-rate increase. Memory capacity is only one part of integrated-graphics performance.
The 1920×1200 display is sharper than the 1280×800-class panels used by many handhelds, but it also requires more rendering power. In demanding AAA games, users will often need reduced graphics settings, a lower internal resolution, an upscaler, or a frame-rate cap. The 120Hz panel is a display ceiling, not a promise that modern games will run at 120 frames per second. VRR can smooth uneven frame delivery, but it cannot create additional performance.

The 8-inch display is a major advantage—and a performance trade-off
The Claw A8 uses an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS-Level touchscreen with 500-nit typical brightness, 100% sRGB typical coverage, and a 48–120Hz variable refresh range. The larger panel can make small text, menus, strategy games, and desktop controls easier to read than on a typical 7-inch handheld.
Independent reviews from Notebookcheck and Tom’s Guide regarded the display as bright, sharp, colorful, and well suited to handheld gaming. However, it is an IPS-Level panel, not OLED. Buyers should not expect OLED’s near-perfect blacks, per-pixel contrast, or OLED-style HDR presentation.
The practical sweet spot may be rendering games below the panel’s native resolution and using a good upscaler. That preserves much of the screen’s clarity while reducing the graphics workload, although the result depends on the game and scaling technology.
80Wh battery: excellent capacity, not guaranteed runtime
MSI equips the Claw A8 with an 80Wh four-cell battery and a 65W USB-C power adapter. Capacity is one of the handheld’s strongest specifications and gives it more energy headroom than many smaller Windows handhelds.
It does not, however, translate into a fixed number of gaming hours. High-wattage performance modes, high brightness, 120Hz operation, Wi-Fi, demanding games, and uncapped frame rates can drain the battery quickly. MSI’s own endurance disclosure is based on 1080p video playback under a specified test configuration, not unrestricted AAA gaming.
Tom’s Guide found the battery capable of lengthy gaming sessions but reported that it trailed the same-capacity ROG Ally X in its testing. Notebookcheck also characterized battery life positively. Independent results remain workload- and settings-dependent, so video playback figures should not be used as gaming-runtime estimates.

Size, weight, and controls
At approximately 1.68 pounds, the Claw A8 is portable but not especially light. The 8-inch display and 80Wh battery improve visibility and endurance while adding bulk and hand fatigue during long sessions. MSI describes the listed dimensions and weight as theoretical values, so they should not be treated as laboratory measurements of every retail unit.
The controls include Hall-effect analog sticks and triggers, RGB ABXY buttons on listed models, macro buttons, HD haptics, and a six-axis IMU. Hall-effect controls avoid the conventional potentiometer mechanism associated with one common form of stick drift, but they are not immune to physical damage, calibration errors, button wear, or software problems.
MSI also includes a dedicated MSI Center M button and quick-settings controls. The company’s MSI Center M software is designed to make handheld controls, performance profiles, and game access easier to manage, while Xbox Game Bar integration provides another overlay-based control path. These features improve access to handheld functions, but they do not remove Windows’ desktop-oriented behavior.
Ports, connectivity, and storage
The Claw A8 has two USB-C ports supporting USB4, DisplayPort output, and USB Power Delivery, with Thunderbolt 4 compatibility listed by MSI. It also includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and a microSD card reader.
The 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD provides useful room for modern PC games, many of which occupy tens or more than 100GB. A microSD card is convenient for additional storage, although it is generally better suited to less demanding games and media than to every performance-sensitive installation.
Do not assume that RAM can be upgraded. Treat the 24GB memory as a fixed configuration unless MSI explicitly documents otherwise. The SSD may be accessible on some models, but the form factor, service procedure, warranty implications, and upgrade difficulty should be verified against the exact regional service documentation before promising an easy replacement.

ASUS ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X
ASUS’s Ally family is the most direct category comparison: Windows handhelds with AMD-oriented performance and strong power-profile controls. Compare the exact model’s battery, memory, screen, processor, software interface, and current price rather than assuming that a processor name alone determines the better buy. Lenovo Legion Go and Legion Go 2
Lenovo’s Legion Go family offers larger-screen and different ergonomic options, but its models vary substantially in processor, memory, display, and pricing. The Claw A8’s 8-inch screen and 80Wh battery make it a distinct configuration rather than a direct specification match. Check the exact Legion Go model before comparing.
Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED is a different proposition. SteamOS offers a more console-like experience, while the Claw A8 offers broader Windows launcher compatibility and a higher-resolution 120Hz display. The Steam Deck is not a direct performance or price equivalent, but it may be the better fit for buyers who value simplicity and the Steam ecosystem over maximum Windows flexibility.

MSI Claw 8 AI+
The Claw 8 AI+ is the closest internal comparison, but it is Intel-based. The two systems differ in more than CPU branding: graphics architecture, drivers, memory, power profiles, cooling behavior, battery performance, and game compatibility can all affect the experience. A small benchmark sample showing the Z2 Extreme ahead of Intel Lunar Lake should not be expanded into a universal AMD-versus-Intel verdict.
Who should buy the MSI Claw A8?
The Claw A8 makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want:
- An 8-inch display for easier-to-read text and more immersive games.
- A large 80Wh battery and are willing to accept the added weight.
- Windows compatibility across Steam, Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net, and other PC software.
- AMD integrated-graphics performance in an MSI handheld chassis.
- 24GB of shared memory and Hall-effect sticks and triggers.
- The ability to tune wattage, resolution, frame caps, graphics settings, and upscaling.
It is a weaker choice for buyers who:
- Want a lightweight handheld for long periods of one-handed or unsupported holding.
- Expect demanding games to run natively at 1920×1200 and 120Hz.
- Prefer OLED contrast or HDR-style image quality.
- Want a console-like interface with minimal Windows maintenance.
- Are highly price-sensitive or primarily judge handhelds by performance per dollar.
- Already own a recent Z1 Extreme handheld and expect a transformative improvement in every game.
- Do not want to troubleshoot Windows updates, launchers, drivers, overlays, and game-specific controller issues.
Verdict
The MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM is a technically ambitious Windows handheld. Its 8-inch VRR display, 80Wh battery, 24GB memory, Hall-effect controls, and Ryzen Z2 Extreme platform give it a clear identity among premium handheld PCs.

At the MSI US Store’s observed price of $1,299, however, it is not an automatic recommendation. The device is most attractive to enthusiasts who prioritize screen size, battery capacity, Windows flexibility, and AMD graphics performance. Buyers who prioritize low weight, OLED quality, console-like software, or value should compare alternatives carefully—or wait for a sale.
For any purchase, verify the exact BZ2EM SKU, regional warranty, included accessories, current price, and stock status. The $1,149 figure found in earlier US reports and the later $1,299 MSI listing should not be treated as one unchanged official price.
